cache_accessor_exposes_a_connected_cache_when_available dialled the literal redis://localhost:6379, so on a developer machine it opened a connection to whatever Redis listens there (Jake's own), not a test server. It now takes its URL from REDIS_URL through test_cache_url() and returns early when the variable is unset, just as it already did when the connect failed. CI sets REDIS_URL on Linux, macOS and coverage, so the connected path still runs there. The URL is read under zone_core's process-wide environment lock so a concurrent test that changes REDIS_URL cannot make it skip. the_test_cache_url_comes_only_from_redis_url pins the helper: None with REDIS_URL unset, the given URL when set. Fail when the configured cache cannot connect.
When REDIS_URL is set, a failed Cache::connect(&url).await returns success before state.cache() is checked. CI sets REDIS_URL and runs this test through the workspace nextest command, so an unavailable configured cache can pass without exercising the regression assertion.

Landed on main as 0c6a67d, adapted onto current state.rs (device connection holds stay). |
What changed
zone_server/src/state.rs(tests only):cache_accessor_exposes_a_connected_cache_when_availabletakes its URL fromREDIS_URLthrough a newtest_cache_url()helper instead of the literalredis://localhost:6379. WithREDIS_URLunset it returns early, as it already did when the connect failed; it never falls back to localhost. The URL is read underzone_core::variables::Variables(the process-wide env lock) so a concurrent test changingREDIS_URLcannot make it skip undercargo test.the_test_cache_url_comes_only_from_redis_url: holds the env lock, asserts the helper returnsNonewithREDIS_URLunset and the given URL when set.Why
The test opened a connection to whatever listened on
localhost:6379. On a developer machine that is the developer's own Redis (on Jake's, his native Redis), not a test server, so a local test run touched real data.How it was verified
test_cache_url()still returning the literal,zone-verify.sh <wt> zr5 scoped - -- -p zone_server -E 'test(/cache/)'failedthe_test_cache_url_comes_only_from_redis_url(left: Some("redis://localhost:6379"),right: None).--all-features -D warnings, migrations, 47/47 cache tests including the integrationcache::*suite against a private Valkey).zone-verify.sh <wt> zr5 ready(private pg17 + Valkey): fmt, clippy--workspace --all-targets --all-features -D warnings, migrations, nextest list, and nextest over the workspace with the CI flags all passed: 6321 tests run, 6321 passed, 62 skipped.REDIS_URL, so the connected path runs there).Not verified
nextest listhad already built it (a defect in the local verify harness, not in zone). Doc tests,sqlx-prepare.sh --check,cargo denyand the dependency-tree guards therefore ran only in CI. The change is#[cfg(test)]-only and touches no dependency, query or doc comment.cache_accessor_exposes_a_connected_cache_when_availabledid not run locally; the local harness excludes it by name as defence in depth. CI exercises it.Behaviour differences
REDIS_URLis set. CI sets it inrust-test.yml(Linuxredis://localhost:6379against the Valkey service, macOSredis://127.0.0.1:56379) andrust-coverage.yml, so CI still exercises the connected path.test_config()and the tests'create_test_config()still carry dummyredis://localhost:6379andpostgres://localhost/…URLs. Those are safe only while the pools built from them stay lazy (PgPool::connect_lazy, and no test connecting a cache fromconfig.redis_url); a test that eagerly connects from those configs would dial the developer's own services again.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
