Backports apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2905 to the APISIX and API7EE providers.

Gateway API conformance

The investigation started with three skipped HTTPRoute Core tests in the APISIX suite:

  • HTTPRouteInvalidBackendRefUnknownKind
  • HTTPRouteInvalidCrossNamespaceBackendRef
  • HTTPRouteInvalidNonExistentBackendRef

Each requires an invalid backend to produce HTTP 500. Gateway cleanup could delete the translated route, causing 404 instead. This PR restores these tests by fixing the cleanup boundary. The API7EE suite already enables them.

Scope and impact

The controller currently allows multiple Gateway references to one GatewayProxy and merges their resources into one cache. This does not give those Gateways independent routing domains: overlapping hostname/path or SNI rules can still conflict. HTTPRouteMultipleGateways and TLSRouteHostnameIntersection remain skipped for the shared-data-plane limitations.

The reproduced defect is the deletion boundary: removing one Gateway clears entries owned by other Kubernetes resources too, including unrelated, non-conflicting routes and certificates. This PR preserves those entries and reconciles the deleted Gateway's attached routes. It does not add Gateway isolation or resolve conflicting routing rules.

Behavior changes from master

The cache contains contributions owned by individual Kubernetes resources, so deleting a Gateway must not erase unrelated entries. Routes also need their remaining parents re-evaluated: a deleted Gateway no longer admits traffic, while surviving parents must keep serving it. The previous proxy-wide wipe masked the missing route reconciliation.

Scenario master This PR
Delete Gateway A while A and B contribute non-conflicting resources to the same proxy cache Both providers clear the shared cache; deletion is not restricted to A's resources. Deletes only A's certificates. APISIX schedules the remaining snapshot; API7EE scopes the immediate SSL deletion to A's resource key.
Gateway deletion event Route controllers ignore the event; the full cache wipe masks the missing route cleanup. All five Route controllers reconcile attached routes on Gateway deletion.
Route reconciliation after its Gateway disappears Treats the missing Gateway as unresolved ownership and skips cleanup. Retracts configuration when no Gateway remains. A missing GatewayClass still preserves configuration because ownership is unknown.
Three invalid-backend Core tests Skipped after requests could return 404 during Gateway cleanup. Enables the tests after fixing cleanup interference; all three pass in both APISIX modes.
TLS and redirect e2e assertions A handshake error can abort Eventually; redirect headers are checked with one-shot requests. Retries TLS requests and checks redirect status and Location together.
Restart after scaling the data plane to zero Starts scaling back up without waiting for old pods to disappear. Waits for zero pods before scaling back up and creating new port-forwards.

The e2e changes address timing rather than routing semantics. TLS and redirect checks must allow configuration to propagate before failing. Restart setup must wait for old pods to disappear because a terminating pod can still be Ready and receive a port-forward that breaks when it exits.

Validation

With APISIX 3.19.0 and ADC 0.31.0:

  • Full conformance passed in Admin API and standalone modes. HTTP Core: 30 → 33 passed, with 7 → 4 skipped.
  • Both provider regressions and related race tests passed. The regressions reproduce sibling-resource loss on the original implementations.
  • All 5 targeted e2e cases passed in both modes, including Gateway deletion and startup synchronization after restart.

Native API7EE deployment tests were not run locally; they run in CI.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update Gateway deletion handling across route controllers and providers. They also change how missing Gateways affect parent-reference resolution, revise the conformance skip list, and update end-to-end assertions and dataplane termination waiting.

Changes: Gateway lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gateway delete event handling
internal/controller/*route_controller.go
HTTPRoute, GRPCRoute, TCPRoute, TLSRoute, and UDPRoute controllers now accept Gateway delete events. HTTPRoute still filters generic events.
Parent reference resolution
internal/controller/httproute_controller.go, internal/controller/utils.go, internal/controller/utils_parentref_test.go
A missing Gateway no longer marks a parent reference unresolved. An existing Gateway with a missing GatewayClass remains unresolved. The test expects missing Gateways to allow stale-route cleanup.
Gateway resource deletion
internal/provider/api7ee/provider.go, internal/provider/api7ee/provider_test.go, internal/provider/apisix/provider.go, internal/provider/apisix/provider_test.go
Both providers delete only SSL resources matching the Gateway’s labels. Tests check that the other Gateway’s SSL resource and the shared route service remain, and that only the deleted Gateway’s configuration entry is cleared.

Conformance skip list

Layer / File(s) Summary
Known-gap update
test/conformance/conformance_test.go
The skip list retains HTTPRouteNoBackendRefs and removes three invalid-backend-reference tests. The comment describes the missing HTTP 500 response for omitted backend references.

End-to-end test updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
HTTPS and redirect assertions
test/e2e/crds/v2/tls.go, test/e2e/ingress/annotations.go
The tests use RequestAssert to check HTTPS status and redirect status and location.
Dataplane termination wait
test/e2e/scaffold/apisix_deployer.go
When replicas are zero, the deployer polls until matching APISIX pods terminate, with a 30-second limit.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No security issue from the changed code. Category 1: No issues found; Gateway deletion logs only object identity, and the added tests do not log credentials. Category 2: No issues found; no database persistence changed. Category 3: No issues found; no mutating API authorization path changed. Category 4: No issues found; no parent-scoped API access changed. Category 5: No issues found; no TLS verification or certificate validation behavior changed. Category 6: No issues found; both providers now limit Gateway deletion to SSL resources labeled for that Gateway (internal/provider/apisix/provider.go:204-207; internal/provider/api7ee/provider.go:207-210). The regression tests check that sibling certificates and route services survive. Route reconciliation also removes stale configuration when its Gateway is missing, but preserves it when GatewayClass ownership is unresolved (internal/controller/utils.go:345-386; internal/controller/httproute_controller.go:201-223). Category 7: No issues found; no secret-reference resolution changed.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

Blocking: the PR does not add E2E coverage for the shared-Gateway deletion flow. Both new regressions call provider.Delete directly and send requests to httptest servers (internal/provider/apisix/provider_test.go:177-188, internal/provider/api7ee/provider_test.go:143-154). The existing E2E case deletes a single Gateway and checks its route returns 404 (test/e2e/gatewayapi/httproute.go:825-850); it does not test shared resources. The PR’s E2E diff only changes TLS/redirect assertions and pod termination waits. The new handlers also call require.NoError from a server goroutine and discard JSON encoding errors (provider_test.go:179-184, mirrored in API7EE).

Resolution

Add a dedicated E2E test that creates two Gateways sharing one GatewayProxy, configures distinct routes and certificates, deletes one Gateway through Kubernetes, and verifies against the real data plane that only its resources are removed. Cover both provider modes where applicable. In both httptest handlers, report decode/encode errors safely to the test goroutine instead of calling require in the handler, and check server shutdown errors.
