About Bugema Linux

Bugema Linux is an open-source Linux distribution initiative of the Bugema Open Source Community (BOSC) at Bugema University, Uganda.

The project aims to develop a secure, reliable, maintainable, and education-focused Linux environment that responds to the computing needs of the University while providing students and staff with a practical platform for open-source software development, systems administration, cybersecurity, networking, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), research, and innovation.

Bugema Linux is being developed as both:

  1. A real institutional open-source technology project for Bugema University; and
  2. A practical learning and research platform for students taking Open Source Systems and related computing courses.

Vision

To establish a sustainable, open-source computing platform that supports teaching, learning, research, innovation, and digital transformation at Bugema University.

Objectives

Bugema Linux seeks to:

  • Provide a customized Linux environment for Bugema University.
  • Support teaching and learning in computing and related disciplines.
  • Provide a practical platform for students to contribute to a real open-source project.
  • Promote open-source software development and collaboration through BOSC.
  • Support software engineering, programming, networking, cybersecurity, AI, IoT, and research activities.
  • Provide a reproducible and maintainable computing environment for laboratories and selected institutional use.
  • Encourage student innovation and contribution to publicly accessible open-source software.
  • Develop local technical capacity in Linux systems, DevOps, cybersecurity, software engineering, and open-source governance.

Project Scope

The initial development areas include:

  • Linux distribution customization
  • Desktop environment and Bugema branding
  • Software packages and educational applications
  • Development tools
  • Networking and system administration tools
  • Cybersecurity tools
  • AI and machine learning tools
  • IoT development tools
  • Research computing tools
  • Installation and deployment
  • System testing and quality assurance
  • Documentation
  • Continuous integration and automated builds

Development Approach

Bugema Linux will initially be based on an established Linux distribution rather than developing a Linux kernel from scratch.

The project will progressively introduce:

  1. Base distribution selection
  2. System architecture
  3. Reproducible builds
  4. Bugema branding and desktop customization
  5. Educational and development software
  6. Installation and deployment
  7. Automated testing
  8. Security controls
  9. Continuous integration and delivery
  10. Pilot deployment
  11. Institutional evaluation
  12. Production releases

The selected base distribution will be formally documented as part of the architecture phase.

Open Source Systems Course Integration

Bugema Linux will provide a practical environment for the Open Source Systems course.

Students will learn by contributing to an actual open-source project through:

  • Git and GitHub
  • Issues
  • Branches
  • Pull requests
  • Code review
  • Linux administration
  • Software packaging
  • Testing
  • Documentation
  • Continuous integration
  • Open-source governance
  • Security
  • Team collaboration

Student contributions will follow the project's contribution guidelines and review process.

Development Workflow

The project will use the following workflow:

Assignment
  ↓
Feature Branch
  ↓
Development
  ↓
Testing
  ↓
Pull Request
  ↓
Peer Review
  ↓
Maintainer Review
  ↓
Merge
  ↓

Direct development on the main branch should be avoided once branch protection and the contribution workflow are established.

Project Status

Current phase: Project Foundation

Initial milestone

Bugema Linux Alpha 0.1

The first operational milestone will aim to produce a bootable and installable Bugema Linux image that can be tested in a virtual machine.

The Alpha release will progressively target:

  • Successful boot
  • Installation
  • Bugema branding
  • Internet connectivity
  • Web browser
  • Git
  • Python
  • Java
  • LibreOffice
  • Basic networking tools
  • Development environment
  • Basic system documentation
  • Reproducible build process
  • ISO checksum
  • Known-issues documentation

Community

Bugema Linux is developed under the Bugema Open Source Community (BOSC).

The project welcomes contributions from:

  • Bugema University students
  • Academic staff
  • Technical staff
  • Researchers
  • Alumni
  • Partner institutions and communities Contributions will be managed through GitHub issues and pull requests.
