Add unit tests?

We should run unit tests automatically to keep us confident that things are working correctly before we publish. Even some really simple ones! I'd be happy to set this up but I'd need an idea of where to start.

It has been on my "TODO" list for quite some time with this repo, to import the python unittest library (or whatever other you think is better) and start implementing some basic unit testing.
