Outcome

Phase 1 of docs/specs/2026-10-25-architecture-direction.md is done, and phase 2 waves 1 and 2 have landed on top of it. The five shared contracts C1-C5 exist as types with tests (crates/ecp-core/src/contracts/, notes in docs/specs/contracts/). The first behaviour slices use them:

  • every parse path routes through one FileRouter and one SizeCap;
  • every graph command reads through one ReadContext rooted at the worktree top;
  • the index and the session overlay decide call fallbacks from one Resolution;
  • the overlay runs the cold index's provider set;
  • every graph command carries every caveat in its payload result field.

The cold-index edge multiset is unchanged on 18 corpora (vscode: 1,090,663 edges). Per-query latency is unchanged or lower.

Door: two-way, with one trace. A revert restores the old behaviour. The trace is in ~/.ecp/:

  • BUILDER_FINGERPRINT moves from +schema21 to +schema25, so the first query after upgrade rebuilds each graph once. That rebuild is automatic.
  • VIEW_CACHE_FORMAT moves from 3 to 4.
  • After a revert, the schema25 graphs stay in ~/.ecp/ until GC. The reverted binary rebuilds its own graphs and does not read them.

tests/stored_formats_prev_release.rs reads data that the 0.16.4 binary wrote, and it passes.

Blast radius (transitive callers, ecp impact --baseline origin/main):

Symbol Transitive callers
Tier::ImportScoped 463
resolve_callee 388
the overlay call closure 374
DirtySet::events 698

The ~9,000 shown for the DirtyEvent variants are name collisions (Modified, Added), not callers. The freshness gate (auto_ensure) runs on every query.

What happened

The direction doc names 11 structural areas. In each area, two code paths answer the same question in two ways. Phase 1 writes the shared contracts, and phase 2 moves the readers onto them, slice by slice.

Review of this branch found real defects that the contracts made visible:

  • Size cap. The incremental, overlay and --baseline paths ignored [index] max_file_bytes. A repo cap above 1 MiB dropped a dirty file's symbols.
  • Caveat coverage. Most graph commands dropped the "unreadable changed path" caveat, and text output printed caveats on stderr only, which MCP does not read.
  • bm25 ranking. A new uncommitted symbol ranked below every BM25 row.
  • Overlay fallback. The overlay skipped the index's constructor fallback after a lexical shadow (TS/JS).
  • Baseline over the cap. impact --baseline reported every symbol of a file that crossed the cap as removed.

What changed

  • Contracts C1-C5: identity, workspace, dirty event, raw records, routing (types, invariants, tests, design notes).
  • C3 freshness slice: porcelain is classified once, and "other" paths drop before any syscall. The latency criterion is now absolute 30 ms; the failure record is in C3-dirty-event.md.
  • R1a: the outcome type (Tier, Hit, NoEdge, Resolution) gives one confidence table.
  • P1: the cold index routes through FileRouter, with one SizeCap (env > [index] max_file_bytes > 1 MiB).
  • F1: ReadContext, rooted at the worktree top.
  • R1b: the index and overlay call entries decide fallbacks from one Resolution.
  • P2: the overlay parses with the providers its route lists; provider_name_for_path is deleted.
  • F6: the caveat is in the payload result field; text output prints it as the first stdout line.
  • OpenAPI: schema and field nodes carry their key's line, past YAML anchors, tags, comments and directives.
  • Review fixes:
    • one size cap on every parse path;
    • Engine::caveat() is the single caveat source;
    • exact-name overlay rows rank first;
    • the freshness walk writes the HEAD sidecar and records unreadable names;
    • ensure_fresh roots at the worktree top;
    • the dead YAML provider and the Fallback tier are deleted;
    • FileRouter::PATH_ONLY;
    • a path-not-utf8 omission.
  • Docs: the contract notes, the direction doc and the README (size-cap default 1 MiB) describe the landed state.

Follow-ups filed: FU-2026-10-25-77fc8cac8067 (the size cap is not yet a cache input), FU-2026-10-25-0a44c90c8c30 (YAML provider name), FU-2026-10-25-da0403748ac7 (ecp impact false edges on .map). FU-2026-10-25-fe9200fda441 (OpenAPI line 1) is fixed here.

How to verify

Run each suite per crate, with the session env vars unset:

Command Result
cargo test -p ecp-core -j 4 969 passed, 0 failed
cargo test -p ecp-analyzer -j 4 4330 passed, 0 failed
cargo test -p egent-code-plexus --tests -j 4 2499 passed, 0 failed, 11 ignored
cargo test -p ecp-mcp -j 4 53 passed, 0 failed
cargo clippy --tests (4 crates) clean

Edge multiset A/B (cypher dump of every edge, the pre-fix binary against HEAD):

  • 18 corpora are identical: the 14 language subrepos of .sample_repo, bash, dockerfile, this repo and vscode.
  • A control repo with an OpenAPI YAML shows +2 edges, so the check can fail.

Latency (find, median of 30, release builds):

Case Before After
12,000 untracked csv 28.7 ms 27.6 ms
clean 11.6 ms 11.2 ms

Each regression test below was watched red with its fix reverted, then green:

  • test_resolve_call_index_and_overlay_same_fallback_decision_all_rows: only the TS/JS lexical rows failed.
  • test_impact_baseline_file_crosses_size_cap_not_compared_caveat_names_it
  • test_find_exact_text_warm_attached_caveat_first_stdout_line

Review rounds:

  • Round 1 (Tier 3): opus Correctness ×2, Quality, Efficiency and Spec, a haiku Reuse pass, and codex. Gemini was skipped because its quota was used up.
  • Round 2 (on the fix diff): opus and codex. Both reached the stdout-caveat gap independently. Every finding is fixed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Search can include newly added symbols from the current session, with exact-name matches prioritized.
    • Results now surface caveats for stale or partially unreadable repository data in text and structured output.
    • Incremental analysis now covers Bash files.
  • Bug Fixes

    • OpenAPI schema results now include source locations for schemas and fields.
    • Repository refresh handles changed, renamed, deleted, and unusual file paths more reliably.
    • Repository-configured file-size limits now apply consistently across indexing, reanalysis, session overlays, and baseline impact comparisons.
  • Behavior Changes

    • The default maximum file size is now 1 MiB; larger files are skipped unless the limit is raised.
    • Event-topic relationship results are no longer generated.

…table; builder schema21

Any line starting with 'name' became a package alias: namespace_packages = true
gave 'true/*', a [[tool.poetry.source]] name gave 'pypi/*', and a trailing
comment stayed inside the Cargo crate name. schema21 also covers phase 0's
analyzer output changes (one Route per decorator verb, compose flow-mapping
build), which shipped without a fingerprint bump.
…e, size cap is a cache input, language handoff to C2
…op two orphan files

resolve_tx_scopes took the first containing function, so a decorated nested
function bound its outer function; it now uses the shared
enclosing_fn_idx_by_span like Go, Dart and Ruby. post_process/event_topics.rs
and ast_test.rs were never declared as modules (postparse F10). The
RawPathLiteral doc now says a module-top literal gets no edge, as the code does.
…bership, missing configs recorded, C5 Language, root-manifest check
…ce, unmerged existence confirmed by the reader
…stored discriminator table, literal target names, bare-name ambiguity (plan row 2-5)
…ceName, packed-index check, FetchSite caveat, HandlerRef mapping
…e any syscall (C3 slice, freshness F6)

The freshness gate parses git status with DirtySet::from_porcelain_z,
classifies each path with C5's FileRouter or today's provider table (C3 open
point 2: no change to the overlay's inputs, no fingerprint bump), and drops
'other' paths. A tree dirty only in untracked .csv files is Ready. Renames
carry both halves; a hand-deleted conflicted file stays Unmerged until the
reader's stat. The build's clean check keeps every path, since the build
reads config and ignore files. An untracked nested repository (?? sub/) is a
Directory skip: the gate stays quiet about it, the build counts it dirty.
…placement

The C3 slice measured 28.4 ms against 15.9 ms clean (ratio 1.79) on 12,000
untracked csv files; the cost is git listing them under -uall. Review kept
-uall (-unormal hides files inside a new untracked directory) and restated
the criterion as an absolute 30 ms median plus no per-path work for other
paths, to be re-verified on the named corpus.
…o edge change)

Adds analyzer/outcome.rs with Tier, Hit, Reach, NoEdge (Ambiguous carries
the candidate count, C4 open point 6) and Resolution. The view CONF_* consts,
resolver MT_CONF and both LadderMember maps now read Tier::confidence; values
are byte-identical. resolution_fallback_rows.rs pins today's seven B 4.3
fallback rows on both the index and the overlay.
…leRouter

The cold walk, detect_needed_providers, should_analyze_path and the pipeline
route every path through C5 FileRouter with one SizeCap (1 MiB default,
ECP_MAX_FILE_BYTES and [index] max_file_bytes via config::resolve_size_cap).
EXTENSION_TABLE, the pipeline's 16 MiB resolve_max_file_bytes and the
hand-written extension list are gone; provider_name_for_path stays as a thin
wrapper until P2 moves its callers. A sniffed OpenAPI YAML now reaches the
openapi provider (the chain ends before the generic yaml provider). A
non-UTF-8 path is skipped rather than routed through a lossy spelling.
ReadContext::for_dir / for_graph turn cwd or a registry selector into the
worktree top (git_layout, no process), the graph with the session overlay,
the C3 dirty set and the caveats. main.rs and load_ensured both go through
it, so a query from a subdirectory roots the dirty set at the top, and the
by-repo engines (bm25 find, group, peers plan) attach the overlay. bm25 now
lists new overlay symbols, scored like the substring fallback and tagged
score_source substring.
…rrow

The Go row had no go.mod, so the import never mapped to util/ and the row
fell through to the global tier. The Python row also planted a nested
get_db that binds same-file at 1.0 across the function scope (the Python
lexical opt-in's defect, slice R8), which is not this row's fallback.
The C++ constructor and TS chain rows now pin the observed 0.85.
provider_name_for_path reads the first candidate instead of borrowing an
iterator in the tail expression; the routing ledger row for __brick__ dart
now records today's None.
provider_name_for_path now answers from the same FileRouter, so the
legacy second term of classify_dirty (C3 open point 2) is the route
itself; DirtySet::classify replaces the hand-built union.
…the caveat

The read context's caveats (warm attach, stale graph, dirty-set paths the
gate skipped) reach the structured result field of these five commands, so
an agent sees them in the payload it parses. The Ready path now keeps the
skipped entries (probe_index), so ReadContext::caveats reports a non-UTF-8
dirty path. The MCP spawn path already forwards stdout; a contract test pins
that. --format help states when result appears.
reanalyze, the overlay writer and impact --baseline derive provider names
from each path's FileRoute (provider_names_for_paths, pipeline_for_path
caching one pipeline per distinct set), so the overlay re-parses bash, lua,
the systems and contract DSLs, sql, hcl, protobuf and the path-rule
providers it skipped before; extract_symbols routes by the repo-relative
path. provider_name_for_path and ALL_PROVIDER_NAMES are gone; builder and
laravel_routes read FileRoute::fixed_language. schema23.
…olution

resolve_call / resolve_imported_call and the overlay call closure carry one
Resolution through the Python submodule rule, the Go package lookup, the
declared-attribute stop, the ladder, the Kotlin extension retry, the
untyped post-filter and the constructor fallback, each gated by
Resolution::call_fallbacks_allowed. The overlay now runs the Go lookup
before setting the untyped flag, as the index does, so a Go value receiver
no longer binds a same-package free function at 0.7 in the overlay only.
ResolutionTier::base_confidence reads Tier::confidence. Hit.tier is
Option<Tier> until the ladders report a tier. VIEW_CACHE_FORMAT 3 -> 4
(the overlay view changes for those sites).
serde Values carry no position, so every OpenAPI Struct and SchemaField
node reported line 1. key_spans walks the tree-sitter-yaml CST (YAML is a
JSON superset, one walk serves both) under components.schemas or
definitions and gives each schema pair and each properties pair its span.
FU-2026-10-25-fe9200fda441.
…t borrow

A block pair that ends the YAML document ends at column 0 of the row after
its trailing newline; the span now ends on the row before. The pipeline
yaml test reads the first candidate instead of borrowing an iterator in a
closure's tail expression.
…viders emit

The dockerfile provider names a stage by its base image, and an empty proto
message yields no node in the cold index either; the fixtures now plant a
message with a field and look for the base image.
… shadow; OpenAPI lines past anchors and directives

- view.rs: the lexical-shadowed call branch builds one Resolution and runs the
  constructor step the index runs (TS/JS rows added to the fallback table).
- resolver.rs: import_scoped returns a Resolution (one confidence source);
  ladder_resolution doc moved off call_target.
- heuristics.rs: drop the unconstructed Fallback tier; imports at the top.
- outcome.rs: NoEdge::Ambiguous carries the true u32 count (C4).
- schema_scan.rs: descend past anchor/tag/comment/directive nodes.
The key-line change shipped under schema23 with the P2 provider set; one
identifier value now maps to one contract. schema24 also covers the anchor,
tag, comment and directive fix in fe25d1a.
… no dead YAML provider

- reanalyze, overlay and impact --baseline resolve the repo-config cap
  ([index] max_file_bytes) like the cold index; the pipeline_for_path cache
  keys on (providers, cap). Before, they read only the env var (1 MiB), so a
  repo cap above 1 MiB dropped a dirty file's symbols. parse_file_raw applies
  the cap too.
- detect_needed_providers folds into reanalyze::provider_names_for_paths.
- FileRouter::PATH_ONLY replaces seven copies of the built-in-cap router.
- FileRoute::providers() leaves out Language::Yaml, which no parse chain runs
  (C5 open point 6); comments that claimed otherwise are corrected.
- Language::from_extension reads one map built from extensions().
- The cold walk stats each routed file once, and a non-UTF-8 path that would
  route becomes a path-not-utf8 omission instead of vanishing.
- Engine::caveat() joins the warm-attach / behind-HEAD reason with the read
  context's unreadable-changed-paths count, so find, impact, inspect, cypher,
  path and the by-repo load_ensured path carry it too; the per-command caveat
  parameter is gone.
- shape-check, tool-map, heuristics, find-transaction-patterns,
  find-schema-bindings and find-event-mirrors print the caveat in result.
- --format text prints the caveat as its first line.
- bm25: an exact-name substring row (a new uncommitted symbol) ranks ahead
  of BM25 rows before every cut, with its honest substring score.
- Overlay hits take determine_category like base rows.
…the miss caveat; prefix every group caveat line

- yaml/parser.rs: a sniffed OpenAPI YAML routes to the openapi provider (C5),
  so YamlProvider's OpenAPI branch never ran (C5 open point 10). The field
  tests call OpenApiProvider.
- find: the miss caveat counts path-not-utf8 omissions with the others.
- group find / group impact: a caveat now has several lines; each names its
  member.
… unreadable paths; ensure_fresh roots at the worktree top

- An mtime-walk Stale verdict with no source path rewrites .head_sha, so the
  next query takes the git shortcut instead of re-walking the tree.
- The walk maps '\\' to '/' only on Windows and builds its set with
  DirtySet::from_modified, which dedupes; non-UTF-8 and non-repo-relative
  names become skipped entries the caveat counts.
- ensure_fresh normalizes its root with worktree_top, so diff, doctor,
  post_tool_use and summary key paths like the read context.
- PorcelainParse::note allocates each path once.
- Child-process tests assert '1 passed', so a drifted test path fails.
…ecture

C2/C3/C4/C5 'today' sections now describe the code after P1, P2, F1, F6,
R1a/R1b and the review fixes, with the slice that landed each item; C3 gains
SkipReason::Directory; C4 open point 6 is decided; C5 records that the size
cap is not yet a cache input (FU-2026-10-25-77fc8cac8067) and that
providers() leaves out Language::Yaml. README and translations: the size
cap default is 1 MiB and [index] max_file_bytes sets it on every parse path.
…aveats on stdout

- impact --baseline: a changed file with a side over the size cap parsed to
  an omission, so every symbol on the other side read as added/removed, a
  fabricated blast radius with no marker. Such a path is now left out of the
  comparison and named in the result caveat (ImpactHints.payload_caveat).
- find exact/fuzzy, group find and group impact in text mode print the
  caveat as the first stdout line, not on stderr, so a stdout-only consumer
  (MCP) sees it.
- find uses output::merge_caveats: one reason per line.
- Comments: score_source now decides order for exact-name substring rows;
  DecisionTier no longer names the deleted Fallback arm.

Walkthrough

The change centralizes file routing, size limits, dirty-path handling, resolution outcomes, and graph loading. It also updates CLI caveat output, OpenAPI source spans, session overlays, baseline impact analysis, tests, and architecture documentation.

Changes: Analyzer and shared contracts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Routing, provider selection, and size caps
crates/ecp-core/src/contracts/*, crates/ecp-core/src/analyzer/pipeline.rs, crates/ecp-core/src/config.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/commands/admin/index.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/reanalyze.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/session/overlay_writer.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/commands/impact/baseline.rs
FileRouter and SizeCap now provide shared path routing and file limits across indexing, reanalysis, overlays, and baseline impact. The built-in cap is 1 MiB.
Resolution outcomes and analyzer integrations
crates/ecp-core/src/analyzer/outcome.rs, crates/ecp-analyzer/src/resolution/*, crates/ecp-core/src/session/view.rs, crates/ecp-analyzer/src/openapi/*, crates/ecp-analyzer/src/yaml/*, crates/ecp-analyzer/src/python/*
Call resolution and overlay resolution use shared Resolution, NoEdge, and Tier outcomes. OpenAPI nodes and fields receive CST spans. YAML no longer extracts OpenAPI schemas directly; Python transaction scopes use shared enclosing-function lookup.

CLI freshness and query paths

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dirty-path freshness and graph read context
crates/ecp-core/src/contracts/dirty_event.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/auto_ensure.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/build/orchestrator.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/read_context.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/main.rs
Git status is represented by classified DirtySet events. Freshness refreshes reanalyze source paths and preserve skipped entries. ReadContext coordinates graph selection, freshness checks, and overlay attachment.
Caveats, search, and impact output
crates/ecp-cli/src/engine.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/output.rs, crates/ecp-cli/src/commands/*, crates/ecp-mcp/src/spawn.rs
Commands pass engine caveats into output handling. Text caveats are written to stdout. Search includes new overlay symbols and ranks exact substring matches first. Baseline impact excludes over-cap files and reports them in a caveat.

Validation and supporting changes

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: phase 1 architecture contracts (C1-C5) and phase 2 waves 1-2, covering routing, read context, one Resolution, and payload caveats. The changeset matches each named area, so the title is specific and accurate. Its length (124 characters) is long, and the title is dense with internal terms such as C1-C5 and waves, but it is not vague or off-topic.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's intent. It has an Outcome section and a What changed section that cover the summary. It also has a How to verify section with test commands, A/B edge comparison, latency numbers, and named regression tests that serve as the test plan. It adds extra sections (What happened, Blast radius, Door, Review rounds) that the template does not request. The template's headings are not used verbatim: the description has no literal Summary or Test plan heading. The required information is present, so the check passes.

…8 name tests run on Linux only

ensure_fresh now roots at git's top, which resolves symlinks, while the cache
root keeps $HOME as spelled. On macOS every temp dir is such a pair (/var
is /private/var), so drain_tantivy_if_inside_worktree never fired there and
the writer raced the caller. Both sides are resolved before the prefix
check; it runs once per build. A symlinked HOME reproduces it on Linux.

APFS refuses a non-UTF-8 file name (EILSEQ), so the five tests that plant
one are Linux only.
…otes cite schema25

ChangedSymbol serializes file_path as filePath, so the assertion read Null
and could never fail. C1, C2 and C4 still cited BUILDER_FINGERPRINT at
commit_meta.rs:80 as schema21 and VIEW_CACHE_FORMAT 3. (CodeRabbit review)
