Summary

Restore dedalus update [--check]. The command checks the latest stable release and upgrades only when it is newer than the running CLI. A verified global npm installation updates to that exact version; a verified Homebrew formula upgrades only after its published version matches the release. --check does not probe or modify the installation, and the Node runtime is never replaced.

Standalone binaries, Homebrew casks, Windows installs, local npm installs and unrecognized layouts receive manual instructions. Automatic startup prompts are outside this change. Development and prerelease builds require an explicit package-manager update.

Validation

  • npm run typecheck
  • npm run build
  • node --test tests/update.test.mjs: 10 passing tests covering read-only checks, no downgrades, package ownership, publication lag and failure propagation.
  • node dist/esm/bin.js update --help
  • Full test suite: 49 passed, 0 failed.
  • Updater tests are included in the default test command and installed-package verification.
  • pnpm run test:package: clean tarball installation passed all 36 selected tests, including the updater suite.

Hosted regeneration and real package-manager upgrades have not been exercised. This PR is 239 additions and 4 deletions, including tests and documentation; the command and its ownership checks form one reviewable change.
