feat(chat): read Kimi Code's wire log as a conversation - #2615
Kimi Code panes got no conversation view: resolveTranscript knew no store for the kimi agent label, so the chat fell back to the terminal scrollback. This adds a kimi-transcript stream source (closes#2614).
Kimi Code writes one append-only JSONL wire log per agent session under ~/.kimi-code/sessions/wd_<dir>_<sha256(cwd)[:12]>/<session>/agents/main/wire.jsonl.
The store is resolved from the pane's cwd (newest mtime wins; the CLI appends and
closes, so the frontend process holds no open file to follow). The parser maps context.append_message records to user turns and the answer loop
(content.part text/think, tool.call matched to its tool.result by toolCallId,
an unmatched call stays pending) to assistant turns; llm.request records feed
model and thinking effort. herdr-core's kimi-code label maps to kimi, as claude-code maps to claude.
Known limits, agreed in the issue: two live panes with one cwd both read the newest
session (no process binding exists to tell them apart), and records before a context
compaction stay in the file and are still shown.
Validation
bun test server/kimi.test.ts server/conversation-metadata.test.ts server/transcript-turns.test.ts: 49 pass, 0 fail (26 expect calls in the 7 new kimi tests).
bun run check fast: green end to end — typecheck, build, generated types/themes, conventions and the unit run (10691 pass, 0 fail in 663 files). (An earlier run caught server/claude-command-history.test.ts failing once; the same test fails intermittently on unmodified main too — verified by stashing this branch and re-running it there — a pre-existing flake.)
Live against herdr 0.9.3 on Linux: started the checkout's server on 127.0.0.1:7417 with HERDR_SOCKET pointing at the running herdr. /api/pane/conversation?pane_id=<kimi pane> now returns source: "kimi-transcript" with 97 turns (152 text, 187 thinking, 205 tool parts), model: "kimi-for-coding", reasoning_effort: "max"; a Claude pane on the same server still returns its claude-transcript unchanged.
Not run: bun run check full (needs Chrome and the integration herdr), Windows checks, the macOS checks.
A kimi-labeled pane got no conversation view: resolveTranscript knew no
store for it and the chat fell back to the terminal scrollback. Kimi Code
writes one append-only wire log per session under
~/.kimi-code/sessions/wd_<dir>_<sha256(cwd)[:12]>/<session>/agents/main/wire.jsonl.
Resolve the live session by cwd (newest mtime, the CLI appends and closes)
and parse its records: user prompts (context.append_message), answers
(content.part text/think), tool.call/tool.result pairs (matched by
toolCallId, a call left without its result stays pending), and model plus
thinking effort off llm.request. herdr-core's kimi-code label maps to
kimi, as claude-code maps to claude.
Known limits: two live panes in one cwd read the newest session for both
(the store keeps no process binding); records before a context compaction
stay in the file and are still shown.

New Features
Kimi Code panes now display conversations from their session logs, organized into turns rather than relying on terminal scrollback.
Conversation turns include prompts, assistant responses, thinking, and tool activity, with tool results showing their output and success or error status.
Available model and reasoning-effort details are now recognized from Kimi conversations.
Kimi Code panes now use the CLI’s wire.jsonl log as their conversation source. The parser creates turns from prompts, assistant text and thinking, and tool calls and results. Conversation resolution, metadata extraction, and Herdr agent-name mapping now include Kimi.
Changes: Kimi Code transcripts

Summary
Discover and parse Kimi transcripts server/kimi.ts, server/transcript-turns.ts, server/kimi.test.ts, changelog.d/kimi-conversation.md
Selects the newest readable main agent log for a working directory and parses wire-log events into turns. Turn scanning recognizes Kimi user prompts. Tests cover session selection, text extraction, assistant content, tool calls and results, malformed lines, and turn starts. The changelog describes the transcript source.
Route Kimi transcripts shared/protocol.ts, server/conversation.ts, server/conversation-metadata.ts, server/conversation-shared.ts, server/herdr-core/snapshot.ts
Adds Kimi transcript source handling and pane cwd resolution with foreground cwd fallback. Metadata parsing reads model and reasoning effort from Kimi request records. Herdr maps kimi-code to kimi. The RecognizedConversation.source union remains unchanged.
Kimi Code panes now show conversations from the wire log, but panes in managed workspaces or with a custom data root still fall back to scrollback. Injected or task messages may also appear as user prompts. These are bounded gaps in a new feature and not blockers, so address them before or soon after merge.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#2614] is active and has coding requirements. The PR adds kimi-transcript resolution in server/conversation.ts, including pane cwd and nonempty foreground_cwd fallback. server/kimi.ts derives the Kimi session path, selects the newest main/wire.jsonl, and parses user messages, assistant text and thinking, tool calls and results by toolCallId, including pending calls. server/conversation-metadata.ts reads model and thinkingEffort. server/herdr-core/snapshot.ts maps kimi-code to kimi. The source union, turn scanning, changelog, and focused tests support the feature. The agreed shared-cwd and pre-compaction limits remain documented. The reported targeted tests and fast checks pass.

Honor KIMI_CODE_HOME when locating sessions.
If Kimi runs with KIMI_CODE_HOME set, it writes sessions under that data root. The default homedir() path still searches ~/.kimi-code, so those panes fall back instead of showing their conversation. Resolve the configured data root before selecting a session bucket. (github.com)

Update kimiSessionsDir to resolve KIMI_CODE_HOME as the Kimi data root before
constructing the session path; when unset, preserve the existing ~/.kimi-code
default. Keep the working-directory bucket naming and hash unchanged.

Resolve managed-workspace sessions from Kimi’s session index.
For a managed workspace, Kimi stores sessions under a wm_<uuid> bucket. kimiSessionsDir always constructs a wd_ bucket, so kimiTranscriptPath returns null even when that workspace has a wire log. Use Kimi’s session index to find directories for the requested cwd instead of assuming every workspace uses a derived bucket. (github.com)

Update kimiSessionsDir and the lookup used by kimiTranscriptPath to consult
Kimi’s session index for directories matching the requested cwd, including
managed-workspace wm_<uuid> buckets, rather than assuming a derived wd_ bucket;
preserve transcript lookup for matching sessions.

Two live Kimi panes in one cwd both read the newest session by mtime, so
the second tab showed the first pane's chat. The pane's process tree now
decides: the wire log held open under the pane's shell (the CLI keeps it
appended-and-closed, so only the backend's fd names the session) wins;
without that evidence, the newest session created at or before the pane
shell's start is the pane's own, so a later pane in the same cwd no
longer steals the chat. Resolution is cached per pane briefly.
Two live Kimi panes in one cwd both read the newest session by mtime, so
the second tab showed the first pane's chat.
The CLI's own lock files (~/.kimi-code/locks/sessions/<id>.lock, written
with a live heartbeat) name the owner pid of every live session, and the
session index names each session's directory: a pane's foreground process
or tree matching a lock pid gets that session's wire log. That is the
strong steady evidence; on top of it, an fd match in the pane's process
tree pins the session (the CLI appends and closes, so the log is open
only in write bursts), a new pane prefers the session created in the two
minutes before its foreground process started, and the shell-start and
mtime rules stay as last resorts.
Thanks @daniel-marthaler for the PR and for already adding the /proc held-file check in c12c361; that's the right direction. We reviewed both heads (an omo code review and Codex Terra xhigh, with reproductions in isolated fixtures). Here is what it needs.
1. Show Kimi's chat only when the pane's own process proves the session (HIGH). Every other agent source binds to evidence from the pane's own process (herdr's reported session, or a file or lock held by that process) and otherwise falls back to the terminal. When no single held wire.jsonl is found, and always on macOS and Windows where /proc is absent, this PR still falls back to the session's creation time or the newest modified log in the folder. In our fixtures that showed one pane another session's conversation: two Kimi panes in one folder got the same log, a just-started Kimi with no log yet showed an older finished session, and a later session in the folder took the pane over. Please drop the creation-time/newest-mtime guess on every OS: no proof, terminal output. If Kimi only appends and closes its log, the proof needs another anchor the process holds (its session id in its argv or environment, a lock, or a socket), and if none exists the conversation view should stay off for Kimi rather than guess.
2. Read only the metadata bytes you need (MEDIUM).kimiWireCreatedAt reads each candidate log whole with readFileSync and then slices 64 KiB; three 64 MiB logs took about 130 ms on the server's main thread for one lookup, which runs on each request and every 5 s monitor check. Read just the head (open, read the first window, close).
3. Trim tool output like the other readers (HIGH in the first review, still open). Tool results are embedded whole: a 3 MiB result came back in full, a 16.7 MB response was re-sent on every update of a running turn, and a single 17 MiB result record made the newest page show no turns. The other parsers cut output with trimOutput and fetch the rest on request through output_ref.
Smaller points:
Skip records whose shape is wrong instead of throwing: a JSON null line or an out-of-range time currently fails the whole page.
A missing session is cached as an empty path (null on the first miss, "" on the next) that the caller then accepts.
The kimi-code check in conversation.ts can't match after the name mapping; a stale agent_session naming Kimi can still route a pane there (Letta guards with pane.agent).
Please add a Kimi row and its known limits to the agent table in docs/guide.md, mention the herdr-core kimi-code label change in the changelog, and fix the Validation section (it cites server/transcript-turns.test.ts and 49 tests; we get 23 across the two test files that exist).
The shared/protocol.ts change is fine: nothing in the client switches on specific source names.
On process: CONTRIBUTING.md asks for a maintainer's yes on the issue before a feature PR, and #2614 has no maintainer comment yet, so the "known limit agreed in the issue" isn't agreed. Whether Ovis takes Kimi support at all is the owner's decision, so this review doesn't commit us to merging; we'll re-review when you push, and the merge waits for that decision.
The CLI tags every stored message with an origin: only kind "user" is the
user's own input. Injections (AGENTS.md, system reminders), task notifications
and cron firings were rendered as chat bubbles; parseKimiTranscript and the
turn scanner now skip them, like the meta entries of the other agents.
Validation for c0de250 (fix: hide Kimi meta traffic):
bun test server/kimi.test.ts: 11 pass, 0 fail (incl. new origin-filter test covering injection/task/cron/skillActivation + turnStarts).
bun run check fast: unit 10'694 pass, 1 fail — the known flake server/claude-command-history.test.ts (verified failing on unmodified main earlier on this branch's base; not caused by these changes). typecheck, build, generated types/themes, workflow syntax: ok.
Rolled out to the reporter's local instance (patch + server restart): /api/pane/conversation for the live kimiJump pane now returns 0 turns starting with <system-reminder>, <notification or <cron-fire; pane ends on the real conversation.
Thanks @daniel-marthaler, filtering the meta traffic makes sense. Before we re-review, the three items from the review above are still open: (1) show Kimi's chat only when the pane's own process proves the session, otherwise fall back to the terminal (no creation-time or newest-mtime guess on any OS), (2) read only the metadata bytes needed instead of whole logs, (3) trim tool output like the other readers. FYI the claude-command-history flake you hit is a real Windows/coarse-timestamp bug fixed on main by #2620; merging main in picks it up. And as noted, whether Ovis takes Kimi support at all is the owner's decision.
