Closes #918

Root cause

packages/fff-node/package.json:32-37 leaves freebsd out of os. getTriple() throws Unsupported platform: freebsd (packages/fff-node/src/platform.ts:24). resolveFromNpmPackage() calls it outside its try (packages/fff-node/src/binary.ts:72), so findBinary() throws before the dev-build fallback. There is also no override. Result: a libfff_c.so built from source can't be loaded from an npm install. #904 fixed exactly this, but only for fff-bun.

Fix

Same change as #904, applied to fff-node:

  • freebsd added to os, and getTriple() maps it to unknown-freebsd.
  • resolveFromNpmPackage() returns null when no platform package is mapped.
  • findBinary() checks FFF_C_LIB first. A missing path throws an explicit error.
  • README documents the override.
  • packages/package-lock.json workspace os entries are synced (fff-bun's entry was stale since feat(fff-bun): allow an explicit native library via FFF_C_LIB #904).

No fff-bin-freebsd-* prebuilts and no TRIPLE_TO_NPM_PACKAGE entries. There is no GitHub-hosted FreeBSD runner, so release legs are maintainer's call (#824). ffi-rs ships no FreeBSD prebuilt either, so users build it from source. Not fixable here.

Steps to reproduce

FreeBSD is simulated by overriding process.platform after import (the ffi-rs binding is already loaded for the real host).

cargo build --release -p fff-c
cd packages && npm ci && cd fff-node && npm run build && npm pack --pack-destination /tmp/r
cd /tmp/r && npm init -y && npm i ./ff-labs-fff-node-0.1.37.tgz
cat > repro.mjs <<'JS'
import { FileFinder } from "@ff-labs/fff-node";
Object.defineProperty(process, "platform", { value: "freebsd" });
const r = FileFinder.create({ basePath: process.cwd() });
await r.value.waitForScan(10000);
console.log(r.value.fileSearch("package", { pageSize: 3 }).value.items.map((i) => i.relativePath));
JS
FFF_C_LIB=<repo>/target/release/libfff_c.dylib node repro.mjs   # .so on Linux/FreeBSD

Actual on main:

Error: Unsupported platform: freebsd

Expected: [ 'package-lock.json', 'package.json' ]. On a real FreeBSD host, npm i @ff-labs/fff-node is also rejected with EBADPLATFORM because of the os field.

How verified

Packed the patched package, installed it into a scratch dir, and ran with platform forced to freebsd:

no override -> findBinary: null; create: "fff native library not found ..."
FFF_C_LIB=/nonexistent -> "FFF_C_LIB points to a file that does not exist: /nonexistent/libfff_c.so"
FFF_C_LIB=target/release/libfff_c.dylib -> getTriple: aarch64-unknown-freebsd; search ok: true [ 'package.json' ]
  • node test/e2e.mjs: 33/33 pass. node test/watch.mjs: 7/7 pass.
  • npm run typecheck, oxfmt --check fff-node, oxlint fff-node: clean.
  • Not run on a real FreeBSD host.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added FreeBSD support for the Node.js package.
    • Added an option to specify a custom fff-c library path with FFF_C_LIB.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup instructions for platforms without a prebuilt package, including FreeBSD build requirements.
    • Clarified library path resolution and errors for invalid custom paths.

Mirror #904 for fff-node: add freebsd to os, recognise it in getTriple(),
make resolveFromNpmPackage() return null when no platform package is
mapped, and check FFF_C_LIB first in findBinary() so a source-built
libfff_c.so is usable from a normal npm install.

📝 Walkthrough

The Node package now recognizes FreeBSD and supports an FFF_C_LIB override for native library resolution. The README documents building fff-c from source and setting the override.

Changes: Node native library support

Layer / File(s) Summary
FreeBSD platform recognition
packages/fff-node/package.json, packages/fff-node/src/platform.ts, packages/fff-node/src/binary.ts
The package now allows FreeBSD and maps it to the unknown-freebsd target. npm package-name lookup failures return null, allowing resolution to continue.
Custom library resolution
packages/fff-node/src/binary.ts, packages/fff-node/README.md
findBinary checks FFF_C_LIB before workspace or npm resolution. It returns the path when it exists and throws an error when it does not. The README documents building fff-c from source and setting the variable.

FreeBSD users can now install the package and point it at a self-built fff-c library. However, the native FFI dependency has no FreeBSD build, so the package may still fail to load on FreeBSD until users build that dependency from source. Other platforms are unaffected. This is mergeable if maintainers accept the incomplete FreeBSD path or document a supported way to build the FFI dependency.

🌐 Web query:

ffi-rs 1.3.7 package.json source build FreeBSD @yuuang/ffi-rs

💡 Result:

For **`ffi-rs@1.3.7`**, the published `package.json` shows:

- **No FreeBSD target** in its listed N-API triples or optional platform dependencies.
- Build scripts include `build` (`node scripts/build.js`) and `build:c` (`node scripts/compile.js`).
- Platform binaries are supplied as optional `@yuuang/ffi-rs-*` dependencies; the listed targets cover macOS, Linux, Windows, and Android—not FreeBSD. ([github.com](https://github.com/zhangyuang/node-ffi-rs/blob/master/package.json))

So the manifest does **not establish a supported FreeBSD prebuilt binary or a FreeBSD build path**. It doesn’t rule out manually compiling the source on FreeBSD; that would need verification against the version’s build scripts and native source. The GitHub page inspected is `master`, though it displays version 1.3.7; it is not a version-pinned source view. ([github.com](https://github.com/zhangyuang/node-ffi-rs/blob/master/package.json))

🌐 Web query:

ffi-rs 1.3.7 package.json index.js @yuuang FreeBSD native package

💡 Result:

**No—`ffi-rs` 1.3.7 does not list a FreeBSD native package.** Its `package.json` declares platform-specific `@yuuang/ffi-rs-*` optional dependencies for macOS, Linux, Windows, and Android, but none for FreeBSD. Its N-API target list likewise has no FreeBSD target. ([github.com](https://github.com/zhangyuang/node-ffi-rs/blob/master/package.json))

That means the published package does not provide a prebuilt FreeBSD binding. Whether it can be built or made to work on FreeBSD by other means isn’t established by these package files.

Provide a FreeBSD ffi-rs build path before enabling FreeBSD.

The lockfile resolves ffi-rs@1.3.7, but it has no FreeBSD native package. fff-node imports ffi-rs, while FFF_C_LIB only selects the separate libfff_c file. The documented fff_c source-build workaround therefore does not install the required FreeBSD FFI binding. Add and document a supported ffi-rs FreeBSD build/package path, or remove "freebsd" from os until it exists.

[triage-bot] NO CHANGE: keeping freebsd in os.
ffi-rs has no FreeBSD prebuilt. That is true and already documented in packages/fff-node/README.md. But the ffi-rs loader already handles a source-built binding (ffi-rs/index.js:145-154 loads a local ffi-rs.freebsd-x64.node). The reporter in #918 runs exactly that setup. If freebsd comes out of os, npm rejects the install with EBADPLATFORM, and the issue is about removing exactly that block.
Caveat for @dmtrKovalenko: ffi-rs throws Unsupported architecture on FreeBSD: arm64, so in practice only freebsd-x64 works. Not fixable on fff side.
