Grep checks query matches against declared names, using compiled byte rules for 17 language families. Neovim can group definitions first or return them alone. MCP and Pi expose definitions_only and return ordinary matches with a notice when a completed search finds no definitions.

Search for user_file Classification
fn user_file() / fn test_user_file() Definition
struct user_file / mod user_file Definition
fn other(value: user_file) Usage
impl user_file Usage
Fuzzy characters split between the name and arguments Usage

Filtering runs during match collection. Rejected matches do not enter the result vector, and the scanner stops at the retained per-file limit. Definition-only searches exclude unsupported extensions before content reads. Lines over 256 source bytes are treated as usages; line endings do not count toward the limit. Neovim repeats file headers across sections and shows a separator only when both groups are present.

Core and SDK calls select off, classify, definition_only, or usage_only; SDK and Neovim defaults remain off. JavaScript/Lua booleans still work. Existing C entry points accept a uint8_t mode: 0 and 1 retain their previous meaning, while 2 and 3 require the updated native library. Rust callers select DefinitionMode in GrepSearchOptions.

SDK callers repeat the query, mode, and constraints when paging. MCP and Pi cursors retain definition/fallback state; fallback starts only after a complete search returns no definitions. Empty timed pages retain their continuation cursor.

Five fresh-process measurements on local Apple silicon, using a 3 MB Rust file with 300,000 usages and one definition. definition_only requests one match per file; times are medians for the first grep, and RSS is the process peak. Indexing is outside the timed interval.

Definition location Before (bcecee9): time / peak RSS After (6ac03be): time / peak RSS
First line 19.39 ms / 59.9 MiB 0.77 ms / 10.5 MiB
Last line 18.30 ms / 59.8 MiB 10.56 ms / 10.4 MiB
Classifier measurements and assembly

Criterion on local Apple silicon with Rust 1.98.1, release optimization, and fat LTO: 100 samples, 300 ms warm-up, 1 s measurement. Baseline and optimized binaries ran sequentially. Run make bench-definition for all 49 cases.

Input Before SIMD (056c999) SIMD (c5d4b7d)
Rust, mixed short lines 19.13 ns/line 16.88 ns/line
JavaScript, mixed short lines 27.35 ns/line 26.66 ns/line
Python, mixed short lines 14.04 ns/line 8.50 ns/line
Rust, fn user_file() 14.08 ns/line 12.12 ns/line
JavaScript, const user_file = (value) => value 22.68 ns/line 17.45 ns/line
Python, def user_file(path): 14.26 ns/line 12.26 ns/line
Rust, 96-byte identifier 35.18 ns/line 15.59 ns/line
JavaScript, 96-byte identifier 41.65 ns/line 23.46 ns/line
Python, 96-byte identifier 35.01 ns/line 14.47 ns/line
Rust, indented 257-byte line 1.61 ns/line 0.69 ns/line
Rust, indented 16 KiB line 1.61 ns/line 0.68 ns/line

The mixed cases contain 256 shuffled declaration/reference lines. Timings include the cached FileItem flag read, language dispatch, parsing, and range checking; they exclude I/O, finding query matches, and fuzzy range checking. Some short cases are unchanged: the JavaScript async arrow measured 33.33 versus 33.37 ns. These timings measure classifier cost, not whole-search speed.

The identifier scanner checks three continuation bytes through a compile-time table before using 16-byte vectors. The final partial block uses an overlapping load inside the original slice. ARM64 uses NEON nibble-table lookups; x86-64 uses baseline SSE2 comparisons. Other targets retain the scalar table. Quotes and bracket groups use memchr. The classifier performs no heap allocation and has no runtime Rule dispatcher.

The final fat-LTO assembly has one language jump table and an inlined identifier scanner. Rust fn and Python def use short scalar keyword comparisons; JavaScript arrow bindings also check their assignment and parameter group. The NEON block scan emits:

ldr       q3, [x1, x8]       // 16 source bytes
and.16b   v4, v3, v2
tbl.16b  v4, { v0 }, v4    // low-nibble table
ushr.16b  v3, v3, #4
tbl.16b  v3, { v1 }, v3    // high-nibble table
cmtst.16b v3, v3, v4
shrn.8b   v3, v3, #4
fmov      x12, d3
mvn       x12, x12
rbit      x12, x12
clz       x12, x12          // first delimiter

The length check stays outside the parser's stack frame: cmp x2, #256; b.hi ... skips the classifier call. The x86-64 kernel emits movdqu, packed byte comparisons, and pmovmskb; it was cross-compiled locally, but these timing results are ARM64 only.

Comparison with PR #905

#905 at 4b355cc accepts matches across declaration headers and groups definitions within each page. This PR checks declared names and filters before pagination. Comparing 173 grammar fixtures identified useful cases now covered here: TypeScript const enum, C struct-pointer returns, and Java generic methods.

An earlier raw-classifier comparison used identical mixed fixtures with matching outcomes (100 samples, 1 s warm-up, 2 s measurement, Apple silicon, fat LTO):

Language #905 (4b355cc) #920 (bcecee9)
Rust 73.27 ns/line 19.46 ns/line
JavaScript 66.26 ns/line 25.45 ns/line
Python 44.44 ns/line 13.45 ns/line

This separate harness excludes filename detection, the FileItem flag read, I/O, and grep work. The new scanner keeps a short scalar prefix before its SIMD blocks; its current measurements are above.

Note

The file-picker snapshot suite has 16 failures also reproduced on clean main (d978416). Pi's full typecheck has existing mock typing errors in test/sdk.test.ts at lines 26 and 35.

Guard new modes when the native library may be old.

Values 0 and 1 remain compatible, but modes 2 and 3 are not behavior-compatible with an older library. The old entrypoints accept bool and do not validate the mode. They can treat either new value as the old enabled/classification path and return unfiltered matches.

Add a capability or version check before sending modes 2 or 3 when bindings can use a different native-library version.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject function-pointer declarators in the CType fallback. For struct Foo (*handler)(void);, c_function() returns Foo: it accepts (*handler) and does not reject the following (. A definition-only query for Foo therefore retains a type use. The declared identifier is handler. Reject this shape or return the actual declarator name. (open-std.org)

Review comment at @crates/fff-core/src/definition/rules.rs at line 157:
Update the `CType` fallback using `c_function()` so it rejects function-pointer
declarators such as `(*handler)(void)` instead of treating `Foo` as the declared
function name; preserve the correct declarator-name handling for supported
forms.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Classify every line in a multiline match.

For a query such as impl user_file {}\nfn user_file, this sink receives both lines but classifies only the first impl line. Rust definition mode rejects that line, so classify_match returns None and the sink drops the entire match. The later fn user_file definition is not returned.

Iterate through each line in the expanded match, compute line-relative match offsets, and retain the match when any line is a definition. Keep the existing push_match and after-context handling unchanged.
