What and why

On Linux the window started without root showed a red line and could not capture. Started
through pkexec it did not open at all: pkexec drops DISPLAY and XAUTHORITY, and Tk
stops with "no display name". Windows asks for rights through UAC when the window starts;
Linux now asks the same way, through polkit.

Started without root, the window runs itself again through pkexec. The desktop shows its
own password dialog (GNOME's on Ubuntu), and the copy runs as root. Cancel, no polkit
agent (WSL, ssh) or no pkexec opens the window without root, as before. BEAN_NO_ELEVATE=1
turns the question off, as on Windows.

How

  • beantester/linuxenv.py (new, the twin of winenv.py):
    • wants_root: Linux, not root, no capture rights, a display, pkexec on PATH. Root never
asks, so root without CAP_BPF (a container) cannot start copy after copy.
    • ask_for_root: pkexec --disable-internal-agent [--keep-cwd] <python> -B <script>.
--keep-cwd is used when pkexec --help names it (polkit 121 and newer). pkexec gets
only the locale variables, because it refuses to run (exit 127) when SHELL is not in
/etc/shells or a variable it keeps holds /, % or ... The process waits for the
copy's exit code: 126 or 127 means the copy did not run, and an error starting pkexec is
recorded with crashlog.note. pkexec sets PR_SET_PDEATHSIG while it asks, but for a
person's call the kernel clears it when pkexec changes the effective group to root's, so
the copy does not depend on the waiting process (measured: the parent stopped, the root
window stayed). Ctrl+C is waited through with a handler that does nothing, not SIG_IGN,
      which the copy would inherit.
    • take_desktop: in the copy, DISPLAY, XAUTHORITY and the working folder come from the
parent's /proc entries, and only when the parent's real uid is PKEXEC_UID.
  • cli._run_gui asks on Linux next to the unchanged Windows branch. A copy whose Tk
cannot reach the display answers 127, so the window opens without root instead of not at all.
  • paths.invoking_user reads PKEXEC_UID when SUDO_UID is absent. pkexec sets
SUDO_UID only from polkit 127 (Ubuntu 26.04), so on 24.04 and 22.04 every file the window
    saved stayed root's.
  • pkexec is the package's second child process: tests/test_no_telemetry.py allows it in one
    place, linuxenv._run.

A real pkexec in CI

A new step in the Linux job runs tools/ci_linux_pkexec_smoke.py --require under Xvfb with
the image's own pkexec and polkitd. The image is Ubuntu 24.04 with polkit 124, which names the
person only by PKEXEC_UID.

  1. Without a polkit rule ask_for_root must be refused at once. This is the canary.
  2. A rule then lets the runner's user run pkexec without a password, which is safe only
because the runner is thrown away after the job.
  3. Two granted runs follow, with and without --keep-cwd. Each copy reports that Tk failed
before take_desktop and opened after it, and gives its display, X authority, folder and
    invoking_user.

Checked

  • Lint (ruff, mypy) on every changed file.
  • The new tests and the edited test files pass on Windows and on Linux (WSL). The wiring and
the PKEXEC_UID tests fail on the old cli.py and paths.py. linuxenv.py is new, so its
proof is the 27 new mutation registry entries, which run on CI.
  • With the real pkexec in WSL (polkit 127): refused in 16 ms without an agent. The copy run as
root fails to open Tk, then opens it after take_desktop. Without --keep-cwd it enters its
    parent's folder.
  • On an Ubuntu 26.04 desktop (GNOME, Wayland): the window started without sudo shows the
polkit dialog. Cancel gives exit 126 and opens the window without root. With the
password, the copy runs as uid 0, the window opens without the red line, and the window
file it saves on close belongs to the person; nothing in the checkout is root's.
  • CI on the first commit: the pkexec step on Ubuntu 24.04 (polkit 124) was refused without the
rule and passed both granted runs, with invoking_user read from PKEXEC_UID; mutations
    107 of 107 caught.
  • Second commit (review): the OSError path is recorded and said on stderr, the PDEATHSIG note
is corrected, two registry entries are added, and the POSIX-only X authority test is proven
    by hand on Linux.
  • Not run locally: the full suite, mutate.py, and the CI smoke itself, which writes a polkit
    rule.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • On Linux, the app can prompt for an administrator password when elevated access is needed and polkit is available. If the prompt is canceled or unavailable, the app opens without elevation.
    • Set BEAN_NO_ELEVATE=1 to disable the prompt. Files saved while elevated remain owned by the invoking user.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Linux guidance to explain the elevation prompt, fallback behavior, and how to disable it.

On Linux the window started without root showed a red line and could
not capture; started through pkexec it did not open at all, because
pkexec drops DISPLAY and XAUTHORITY. It now asks the way Windows asks
through UAC: it runs itself again through pkexec, the desktop shows its
own password dialog, and the copy runs as root. A dismissed or
impossible request opens the window without root, as before.

- linuxenv (new): wants_root (Linux, not root, no capture rights, a
display, pkexec, BEAN_NO_ELEVATE unset), ask_for_root (pkexec
--disable-internal-agent, --keep-cwd when its usage names it, -B, the
locale variables only; waits in the main thread because pkexec sets
PR_SET_PDEATHSIG; 126/127 mean the copy did not run), take_desktop
(the copy takes DISPLAY, XAUTHORITY and the folder from its parent's
/proc entries when the parent belongs to PKEXEC_UID).
- cli._run_gui asks on Linux next to the unchanged Windows branch; a
copy whose Tk cannot reach the display answers 127, so the window
opens without root instead of not at all.
- paths.invoking_user reads PKEXEC_UID when SUDO_UID is absent: only
polkit 127 sets SUDO_UID, so on Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04 the files the
  window saved stayed root's.
- CI: the Linux job runs tools/ci_linux_pkexec_smoke.py with the
image's pkexec and polkitd under Xvfb: refused without a polkit rule,
then granted by a rule for the runner's user, with and without
  --keep-cwd.
- Tests for each part, 27 mutation registry entries, README, CHANGELOG.

Walkthrough

Linux GUI startup can now request root through polkit’s pkexec. The elevated process can recover validated desktop context and the invoking user. The change also adds unit tests and a CI smoke test for pkexec behavior.

Changes: Linux pkexec GUI elevation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Elevation eligibility and relaunch
beantester/linuxenv.py, tests/test_linuxenv.py, pyproject.toml, tests/test_no_telemetry.py
The new Linux environment module checks elevation conditions, filters the relaunch environment, builds the pkexec command, and handles child-process results. Tests cover these behaviors, and subprocess policy entries permit the specified pkexec calls.
Desktop recovery and GUI handoff
beantester/linuxenv.py, beantester/paths.py, beantester/cli.py, tests/test_linuxenv.py, tests/test_crashlog.py, tests/test_sudo_files.py, tests/test_mutation_registry.py, README.md, CHANGELOG.md
The elevated process can recover validated desktop state and working directory from its parent. GUI startup requests elevation when eligible and handles a pkexec-started process that cannot create a Tk window. Invoking-user lookup supports PKEXEC_UID; tests and documentation cover the flow.
Real pkexec smoke validation
tools/ci_linux_pkexec_smoke.py, tests/test_ci_linux_pkexec_smoke.py, .github/workflows/ci.yml
The smoke test checks refusal without a polkit rule and granted runs with desktop restoration. Tests cover its judgments and skip behavior. CI installs required packages and runs the test under Xvfb.

Elevation can still fall back to an unprivileged window, but a failed pkexec start would leave no diagnostic record. Fix that and the documentation and test-registry gaps before merging if practical.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

The PR adds tests for the changed Linux runtime behavior. tests/test_linuxenv.py covers elevation conditions, pkexec command and environment handling, exit and signal behavior, desktop recovery, and GUI fallback. tests/test_sudo_files.py covers PKEXEC_UID ownership handling. tests/test_ci_linux_pkexec_smoke.py covers smoke-test judgments and --require behavior. Existing GUI tests were updated to isolate the new elevation path. No existing test was deleted, skipped, or weakened; the spawn test was renamed and expanded to explicitly allow the new pkexec child process, as described in the PR.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

The diff adds no CLAUDE/AGENTS/.claude or .env files, credentials, tokens, URLs, emails, or private machine paths. The absolute paths are system paths or synthetic test fixtures. The added print calls report intentional pkexec smoke-test results or user-facing elevation failures; they are not debug leftovers.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

The PR changes Tkinter GUI startup in beantester/cli.py, but it does not add or change control styling. The diff only adds Linux elevation, desktop handoff, and Tk error handling. No new literal colors, fonts, sizes, margins, paddings, corner radii, or copy-pasted controls are present.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

No explicit desktop-robustness failure is introduced. Linux elevation is conditional: wants_root() requires Linux, a non-root process, a display, missing capture rights, and available pkexec; the Linux backend documents root or required capabilities for capture. BEAN_NO_ELEVATE=1 also disables the request. The elevated GUI is waited on synchronously, and no background worker is added. The changed code does not add working-directory asset loading, settings writes, culture-sensitive number/date handling, destructive actions, or user-facing network calls.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

PASS: The PR adds Linux pkexec process relaunch and a CI-only temporary polkit rule/package setup. It does not add or change any listed system-state mechanism: network filters/rules, proxy, firewall, system time, process hooking/injection, Windows services, registry, or drivers. The reversibility warning condition is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The PR is scoped to the Linux pkexec feature. The changed code, CLI wiring, PKEXEC_UID handling, CI smoke test, and test updates all support that feature, and the description covers them. README.md and CHANGELOG.md document pkexec behavior, cancellation and fallback, BEAN_NO_ELEVATE, and file ownership. The changes add optional Linux helpers and preserve existing sudo handling; they do not introduce a backward-incompatible public API, CLI, configuration, or persisted-data change.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

The PR introduces a clear blocking external-process wait in GUI startup. _run_gui() calls linuxenv.ask_for_root() before creating Tk. ask_for_root() calls subprocess.run() without a timeout and waits until the elevated GUI copy exits. The code documents that this wait lasts for the copy's full lifetime, so the GUI/main thread remains blocked while the elevated window runs.

Resolution

Launch the pkexec copy asynchronously, or otherwise let the elevated copy own the GUI process without waiting on the GUI thread. Keep only the bounded pkexec --help probe on the startup path.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

tools/ci_linux_pkexec_smoke.py:_ask uses bare json.load(f) at lines 156-157. The handler catches ValueError, but deeply nested JSON raises RecursionError, and a large report can consume excessive memory. The report is normally self-generated, but the file reader has no size or parser-depth protection. The repository's beantester.jsonfile.load_json already documents and enforces a 4 MiB limit and converts RecursionError and MemoryError to ValueError.

Resolution

Import load_json from beantester.jsonfile and replace the open plus json.load block in _ask with load_json(report_path). Keep the existing OSError and ValueError handling. Add a test for an oversized report and a deeply nested report.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The new stderr message in beantester/linuxenv.py:149-151 says that pkexec did not start the window and that it will open without administrator rights, but it does not tell the user how to proceed when capture needs root. The exit code is also not explained as cancellation or unavailable authorization. The README and changelog describe the fallback, but do not replace the runtime guidance.

Resolution

Replace the message with actionable text such as: Elevation was not granted (pkexec exit {code}). The window will open without root privileges. If capture requires root, close it and restart with sudo, or run it from a desktop session with a polkit authentication agent. Keep the cancellation and unavailable-agent fallback behavior unchanged.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The PR adds resource leaks in tools/ci_linux_pkexec_smoke.py. _tk() creates a Tk root at lines 128-129 but calls root.destroy() only after root.update() succeeds; an exception from update() leaves that root unreleased. run_phases() creates work = tempfile.mkdtemp(...) at line 167 and never removes the directory or its report files. Repeated smoke runs can accumulate these temporary files.

Resolution

Use try/finally in _tk() so every successfully created Tk root reaches root.destroy(). Wrap the full run_phases() body in cleanup logic and call shutil.rmtree(work, ignore_errors=True) in the outer finally; retain the existing inner finally for removing the polkit rule.

## What a complete pull request looks like here

The change, the guard that catches its absence, an entry in the mutation registry when it
guards a behaviour, and the changelog lines. **A pull request that adds behaviour with no
guard is itself a finding**, and so is one that changes behaviour without touching the prose
that describes it - the READMEs describe current state, and drift there is invisible.

2. **Everything in git is English.** Commit messages, pull request titles and bodies. Quote
the program - interface text, command output, code - and never a person: a sentence from

3. **Anything visible from outside goes in the changelog.** `CHANGELOG.md` for users,
`CHANGELOG-INTERNAL.md` for maintainers; a GUI change counts as visible. Entries go under
`[Unreleased]`, a user-facing entry is capped at 100 words, and `VERSION.txt` is never
   bumped in a pull request.

## Conventions (enforced by tests)

- Code, comments and docstrings are in **English**, and so are commit messages and pull
request descriptions. This repository is public and its history is permanent: a comment or
a message cannot be unpublished, because the commit carrying it stays. Keep local paths,
machine names, addresses and credentials out of all of them. Quote the program - interface
text, command output, code - and not a person: a sentence from a chat or an issue is
somebody else's words. CI checks the mechanical half of this on every pull request.

…note

- linuxenv: an OSError starting pkexec goes to crashlog.note and to
stderr, and a pkexec --help that fails goes to crashlog.note; both
still open the window without root. The module docstring no longer
points at a design file that is not in the repository.
- The docstring and the cli comment said that pkexec's
PR_SET_PDEATHSIG ends the copy together with the process that asked.
Measured on Ubuntu 26.04 with a person's call, it does not: the
kernel clears it when pkexec changes the effective group to root's,
and the root copy outlived its stopped parent. The parent waits only
  for the copy's exit code.
- Mutation registry: the ~/.Xauthority fallback and the recorded
OSError. The POSIX-only X authority test skips on the Windows
mutation job, so it is proven by hand on Linux.
