Look at the machine again before a run acts on what its preview read - #94
A plan is built from one reading of the machine and carried out later. This makes the run look again where it trusted that reading, or its own watching, too far. User-facing wording is in CHANGELOG.md under Unreleased / Fixed.
An arrival nobody asked for is not this run's move. A step that only watched an entry get where it wanted it is still Succeeded, now marked ArrivedUnasked. A restart no longer starts at its end a service it never stopped, and a neighbour that stopped by itself before an ending is not handed back.
A request taken and then lost from sight counts. Marked LostSight and counted like TimedOut, so a restart tries to put the entry back and the way back names it. Both interfaces say the request was taken rather than refused.
Stop during a step's preparation sends nothing. The last look at both ways to stop now comes after the readings a step makes (and, before an ending, after reading the whole process), and before a start type is written.
A second look before ending a process. Criticality and every frozen recovery list are read again. A critical process, one that cannot be read, or a recovery list that differs from the preview (by value) refuses the step. Both interfaces hand the runner a WindowsEndingFactsReader, and a new architecture guard holds that.
A second look before a plan that puts things back. The start type of everything the run would start again is read before the first step, and Disabled holds the whole run, including the neighbours and the ending behind it.
Disable and stop always carries the stop, and a startup setting never takes dependants down.
Hidden neighbours refuse a forced stop of a shared process.EnumServicesStatusEx silently omits services the caller lacks SERVICE_QUERY_STATUS for. Names missing from the listing come from the registry services key (names and Type only), and each one is put to OpenService. A refusal there means the service exists and is hidden. New refusal kind NeighboursUnreadable.
No frozen contract moves: the new result facts and the new refusal are not in the machine-readable output (plan refusals go to stderr with exit code 2, as before).
How it was checked
Narrow test runs after the last change: core 257 (plan filter), CLI 34, window 61, integration 7, architecture 99 (16 guard classes). Full runs are left to CI.
Mutation registry: 28 new entries, 11 re-anchored, 2 re-filed. All caught across three local runs. One existing property entry came back MISSED after a refactor in this branch weakened it. The refactor was reverted to the old shape, and the entry is caught again.
Shape ceilings: the first guard run had seven red, all from this branch (the same guards on main were green). They were fixed with seams, not by raising any ceiling.
Hidden-service read measured on one machine (867 service keys): elevated 804 entries and nothing hidden, 2.7-3.1 ms. Under a restricted token 801 entries, and the independent sc.exe oracle sees three hidden entries, none of them in a shared process, so both sides answer empty.
Not checked
None of this ran against a real service manager with writes (fakes only).
A real hidden service in a shared process: no such service exists on the machine used.
Runs now account for services that reach their requested state without being changed by the run, and distinguish requests that were accepted before a service became unreadable.
Restart operations check for Disabled services before proceeding. Services selected for stopping are still stopped if they start after the plan is previewed.
Before ending a shared process, runs recheck its identity, critical status, and recovery settings, and stop if the information is incomplete or has changed.
Cancellation before a step sends a request now prevents that step from proceeding.
CLI and GUI messages now explain unreadable neighboring services and uncertain outcomes.
Documentation
Updated the changelog with these behavior changes.
A plan is built from one reading of the machine and carried out a moment or
a day later. This closes the places where the run trusted that reading, or
its own watching, further than it should.
- A step that only watched an entry get where it wanted it - somebody else
was already stopping or starting it - is marked ArrivedUnasked. It is
still Succeeded, but it is not this run's move: a restart no longer starts
at its end a service it never stopped, and a neighbour that stopped by
itself before an ending is not handed back.
- A request the manager took, after which the entry could not be read, is
marked LostSight and counts like a request that ran out of time, so a
restart tries to put the entry back and the way back names it.
- Stop pressed while a step reads the entry, or the whole process before
an ending, no longer lets that step send its request or write a start
type.
- Just before ending a process the run reads again whether the process is
critical and what Windows does to each entry in it afterwards, and
refuses when either cannot be read or a recovery list differs from the
one the preview read. Both interfaces hand the runner the reader, and a
new architecture guard holds that.
- Before the first step of a plan that puts something back, the run reads
the start type of everything it would start again, and changes nothing
when one has been set to Disabled since the preview - the steps behind,
the neighbours and the ending included.
- A plan to disable and stop an entry always carries the stop, also for an
entry read as stopped, and a startup setting never takes dependants down.
- A forced stop of an entry in a shared process is refused when Windows
does not list to this account an entry that could live in that process.
The enumeration leaves such entries out without an error, so the names
come from the services key in the registry and each is put to the
manager. The refusal names them.
Several methods moved to stay under the shape ceilings rather than raise
them. The mutation registry gains entries for every change above, and its
anchors follow the code that moved, including one left behind by the
Meziantou.Analyzer update.

Walkthrough
The runner and planner now account for omitted process neighbours, current service and process facts, cancellation timing, and outcomes that occur without a request or become unreadable after a request. CLI and GUI messages, tests, and mutation entries cover these changes.
The planner checks for unlisted services sharing a process and reports an unreadable or incomplete neighbour list. The Windows reader identifies omitted names, and CLI and GUI text describes the refusal.

Start-type actions that also stop the service retain a stop step even when the preview found it stopped. They do not add dependent stop steps. Before restoring services, the runner checks current start types and refuses when a service to restore is Disabled.
Results mark arrivals not requested by the run and accepted requests followed by unreadable entries. Reversal accounting and CLI and GUI messages use these results. The runner also skips actions when cancellation or abandonment occurs before the action is sent.

Termination steps carry recovery readings from planning. The runner rechecks process identity, critical status, and recovery actions before termination. CLI and GUI runner construction supplies the ending-facts reader.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Look at the machine again before a run acts on what its preview read" matches the main objective: runs now recheck machine state (start types, recovery lists, process criticality, and process IDs) before acting on preview readings. It is plain language, names the behavior change, and stays within the length limit. It does not use a vague prefix or generic wording. Minor note: it does not name the affected operations (ending processes, restoring start types), so it is a little broad, but it is still related to the main change.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
PASS — The PR adds or updates tests for the changed runtime behavior. SecondLookTests covers disabled start types, recovery-list changes, criticality, and process identity. PlanRunProgressTests and PlanRunHaltTests cover ArrivedUnasked, LostSight, cancellation timing, and skipped writes. UnlistedNeighbourTests and UnlistedContractTests cover hidden neighbours. CLI and GUI tests cover the new messages. No test files were deleted. The changed property oracle and renamed start-setting test have explicit rationale in the PR description and add assertions for the new behavior.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
PASS: The reviewed diff adds no CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .claude, or .env files. Added-line scans found no credentials, tokens, API keys, private URLs, e-mails, IP addresses, local absolute paths, or debug output calls. The Print Spooler matches are service names, not debug calls.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
The PR changes GUI wiring, view-model sentence selection, and localized JSON strings only. It does not change XAML, WPF code-behind, theme resources, or control definitions. No literal colors, fonts, spacing, sizes, corner radii, or copied controls were added.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No custom-check failure is introduced. The production diff adds local registry/SCM reads and rechecks before service or process actions. It adds no working-directory asset load, file write, culture-sensitive number/date conversion, network call, admin-elevation request, or confirmation bypass. GUI execution remains awaited through the existing Task.Run path, with cancellation and progress passed to the runner; the CLI retains cancellation and window-close handling. The new registry reads catch access and I/O failures.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe file parsing was introduced. The PR adds only literal, valid JSON translation entries; the existing embedded-resource loaders are unchanged. The new registry access uses the fixed SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services key and reads only service names and Type. The new source-file test reads repository files and applies a five-second regex timeout. No external-entity parser, arbitrary-type deserializer, archive/XLSX/CSV export, formula-like value, or path traversal was added.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced. The new registry keys and SCM manager/service handles in WindowsEndingFactsReader.Unlisted.cs and WindowsScmCatalog.Configuration.cs use using declarations, including error and early-return paths. The temporary native query buffer is pinned only inside a fixed block, which releases the pin on return or exception. The PR adds no timers, subscriptions, unbounded caches, unmanaged allocations, or uncancelled background workers.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
The new hidden-neighbour check repeats a full machine scan for each forced-stop plan. ProcessNeighbours.Unlisted calls ReadUnlisted(entries.Select(...)) for every shared-process target (src/Bws.Core/Planning/ProcessNeighbours.cs:92-105), while BulkPlanBuilder builds each selected target in a loop (src/Bws.Core/Planning/BulkPlanBuilder.cs:46-49). ReadUnlisted enumerates all registry service keys, opens candidate registry keys, and calls native OpenService per candidate (src/Bws.Core/WindowsEndingFactsReader.Unlisted.cs:43-95). The listed-name input is identical for every plan in one bulk build, so this causes avoidable repeated registry and FFI work and can become O(selected targets × machine services).
Resolution
Read the unlisted-service result once per bulk plan build for the fixed entries listing, then pass or memoize that result for each PlanBuilder/ForcedStop decision. Preserve target-specific refusal messages while reusing the shared result. Add a bulk-plan test that asserts one ReadUnlisted call for multiple shared-process targets.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR changes the Windows service state-changing path. PlanRunner.RunStep still calls Configure, control.Request, and control.Terminate after the new checks (src/Bws.Core/Planning/PlanRunner.cs:252-317). The code keeps original start-type data only in the in-memory PlanStep. From (src/Bws.Core/Planning/OperationPlan.cs:204-220). NetEffect computes reversal commands but explicitly does not execute them (src/Bws.Core/Planning/NetEffect.cs:40-45), and the CLI and GUI only display those commands (src/Bws.Cli/PlanText.cs:118-134, src/Bws.Gui/ViewModels/Planned.Sections.cs:90-104). Normal interruption can run restore steps, but the CLI's third interrupt terminates the process without a report (src/Bws.Cli/Execution.cs:61-63), and startup has no recovery of an unfinished run (src/Bws.Gui/App.xaml.cs:11-28). Therefore restoration is not guaranteed on crash or next start. The PR description also states that real service-manager writes were not tested.
Resolution
Add a durable, idempotent rollback journal before the first service write. Save the original state for every selected service and process affected by the plan. Execute rollback on normal stop, window close, and cancellation. On process start, detect unfinished journals and restore them before accepting a new run; retain failures and show them to the user. Provide an explicit Restore action in both CLI and GUI instead of displaying reversal commands only. Clear the journal only after successful restoration, and keep the plan scope limited to the selected entries and their explicitly selected dependants.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The PR adds user-facing failure text that explains the event but not the next action. The new lost-sight messages in cli.en.json:151 and gui.en.json:433 say the service state is unknown but do not tell the user to check it or retry. The new neighbour-refusal messages in cli.en.json:185-187 and gui.en.json:376-378 say there is no plan but give no recovery action. The GUI singular message renders as “Windows does not show this account Withheld” because it omits “the service”. The new BecameCritical refusal in PlanRunner.Ending.cs:189-191 also gives no instruction after refusing the action.
Resolution
Add an action to each affected message. For lost sight, use wording such as: “The request was accepted, but the service could not be read afterward: {0} (error {1}). Its state is unknown. Check the service state, then run the command again.” For hidden neighbours, say which services may be missing and instruct the user to run again with administrator rights or an account that can read service status. Fix the GUI singular text to “Windows does not show this account the service {1} ...”. For the critical-process refusal, append: “Do not end this process.”
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The PR changes public API contracts without a Breaking changes section or migration plan. The diff adds ReadStartType to public IScmControl (src/Bws.Core/IScmControl.cs:194) and ReadUnlisted to public IEndingFactsReader (src/Bws.Core/EndingFacts.cs:240); external implementations will no longer compile. It also changes the public PlanRunner constructor (src/Bws.Core/Planning/PlanRunner.cs:29) and the generated positional PlanStep constructor by adding Recovery (src/Bws.Core/Planning/OperationPlan.cs:278), which can break existing binaries. The changelog documents the user-facing behavior, and the description states that machine-readable output is unchanged, but neither addresses these API breaks.
Resolution
Add a Breaking changes section to the PR description. Document the affected interfaces, constructor signatures, and migration steps. Prefer compatibility fallbacks: provide default interface implementations or separate optional interfaces for the new reads, and retain forwarding overloads for the previous PlanRunner and PlanStep constructors. Otherwise provide versioned adapters and explicit guidance for implementers and binary consumers.

Move the abandonment trigger after the first accepted request.
Asking_twice_leaves_things_as_they_are_and_still_reports_what_was_done cancels both tokens inside the starting callback for step 1. The runner invokes starting before it checks cancellation for that step. The first step is therefore skipped before any request is sent. The assertions still pass, because they only check that every result after the first is Cancelled. The test no longer exercises abandonment after a request is accepted, which is the behaviour its comment describes.
Wrap the control the same way the changed restart-cancellation tests now do with Interrupting. Cancel both tokens after the first request is accepted. Then assert that the first result succeeded and that control.Requested contains that step's service.

## Building and checking
### Conventions the test suite enforces
These are guards rather than preferences. Each one exists because the thing it forbids happened at
least once, and most of them read the compiled assemblies or the source tree rather than trusting
a declaration:
- **Every collection keyed by a string says how its keys compare.** Service names compare without
case, and a dictionary that forgot to say so is a bug waiting for a machine that spells one
differently.

Context: ...ervice that could live in it. Windows leaves such a service out of the list without an error, so the plan ...
The claim that the unchanged seed now replays a different input cannot be decided from the inspected evidence. The table change is real: dice 9 and 10 now inject new troubles. Whether the seed 0l4gUzq4NGe5 draws a 9 or 10 requires replaying the CsCheck generator chain (Graphs.Any, the Where filter, and the seed format). That replay was not inspected and cannot be run in this sandbox. The test-coverage concern therefore depends on an unobserved draw.
This test cannot fail when the filter logic breaks, so the new reader logic has no failing guard.
The class comment says that under elevation the answer is empty. Both calls then return an empty list, and Assert.Equal(empty, empty) passes.
Each of these defects would still leave the test green:
MayShare always returns false.
Withheld always returns false.
The !known.Contains(name) filter is removed. Entries the account can open are never "withheld", so the result stays empty.
Assert.DoesNotContain(withTheListing.Value!, name => listed.Contains(...)) repeats the filter ReadUnlisted already applies. It adds no coverage.
The real decision logic is the Type-bit check and the error-code check. Both depend on a specific registry value or Win32 error code. A test can feed those values directly without a restricted token.
Make both pure, then unit-test the edge values:
Type is missing.
Type is 0x10, 0x20, 0x60, or a non-int value.
The error code is 1060, 123, or 5.

Apply the same change to the error-code check in Withheld: add internal static bool IsRefusal(int code). Add [Theory] tests in Bws.Core.Tests for both helpers. Then add mutation entries for them, as the repository does for other guarded behavior.
As per path instructions: "A new test that would still pass with the behavior removed is a finding."

Update the decision logic used by WindowsEndingFactsReader.MayShare and Withheld
so the Type-bit and error-code checks are pure helpers, then add focused unit
tests for the missing, specified, and non-int Type values and error codes 1060,
123, and 5. Replace the current elevation-dependent assertions in ReadUnlisted
coverage with tests that exercise these decisions directly, and register the
helpers with the repository’s existing mutation-test setup.

- A recovery list the manager refuses just before an ending is said as
unread, with the manager's number, rather than as a list that changed
with no number at all - the same treatment the criticality check gives.
- The guard that every runner on the real machine gets the process reader
parses the code, so a reader named only in a comment or a string no
longer satisfies it. A test feeds it the shapes that fooled it.
- The two decisions the hidden-service reader makes - whether a registry
type can share a process, and what a refused open means - are pure
helpers with tests on their values, since no machine offers a test the
keys it would need. The integration test says what it cannot catch.
- The refusal about hidden services says what to try next, as a
condition: an elevated prompt or Restart as admin may show them, unless
their own permissions keep administrators out. The window's sentence
names "the service".
- The changelog states the real reach of that refusal: every shared
process on such a machine, even one holding a single service.
- The test of abandoning a run after the first request presses both
asks once the manager has taken that request. Pressed before it, as it
was, nothing had been sent since the last look at Stop moved, and the
test still passed without abandoning anything.
- The pinned seed of the run property was printed against the larger
trouble table: its new die falls on an entry with no step, so it still
replays the shape it was pinned for. The comment says so.

What this changes
A plan is built from one reading of the machine and carried out later. This makes the run look again where it trusted that reading, or its own watching, too far. User-facing wording is in
CHANGELOG.mdunder Unreleased / Fixed.Succeeded, now markedArrivedUnasked. A restart no longer starts at its end a service it never stopped, and a neighbour that stopped by itself before an ending is not handed back.LostSightand counted likeTimedOut, so a restart tries to put the entry back and the way back names it. Both interfaces say the request was taken rather than refused.WindowsEndingFactsReader, and a new architecture guard holds that.Disabledholds the whole run, including the neighbours and the ending behind it.EnumServicesStatusExsilently omits services the caller lacksSERVICE_QUERY_STATUSfor. Names missing from the listing come from the registry services key (names andTypeonly), and each one is put toOpenService. A refusal there means the service exists and is hidden. New refusal kindNeighboursUnreadable. No frozen contract moves: the new result facts and the new refusal are not in the machine-readable output (plan refusals go to stderr with exit code 2, as before).
How it was checked
mainwere green). They were fixed with seams, not by raising any ceiling.sc.exeoracle sees three hidden entries, none of them in a shared process, so both sides answer empty. Not checked
