feat(gui): the window takes the application from its command line - #143
ChronoMock.exe <program or shortcut> fills the form as a drop on the window does. "Open with" in Explorer and a program dropped on the window's icon now land in the window, and nothing starts until Start.
It also gives the release checks a way to hand the packaged window an application. Until now the only ways in were the file dialog, a drop or the recent list, and none of them can be driven on a package.
What it does
One rule, the drop's.DroppedTarget.FromCommandLine takes exactly one file named .exe or .lnk. A relative name is read from the folder the window was started in, and a name no full path can be made of is no target rather than a crash at start.
One offer for both ways in. The drop and the command line go through the same method in the window, so a refusal comes up in the same words either way: a file that is not a program, a program that is not there, or more than one file.
After the first frame. The offer runs at ContentRendered. Offered at Loaded, the refusal came up before the window was drawn and stood on the screen alone, with the window missing from the automation tree (measured). It is awaited in a handler, as the drop is, so a fault reaches the dispatcher's net at once rather than a discarded task's finalizer.
Checked
On the dev window, through UI Automation:
an absolute path and a relative name with the working folder set became the target
a text file, a missing program and two files each raised the refusal with its reason
a valid program raised no dialog
Two tests, one through a real MainWindow. TargetDropTests and WindowBuildTests 17 of 17.
Three mutation entries, all caught: a relative name taken as it is, a bad name crashing the start, and the window handing the command line nowhere (five after the review round).
format-cs, metrics-pin, hygiene and names pass.
Review round (db378d2)
Three points from the review, each measured before the change.
The startup hookup had no test. Removing it left every test green. It moves into the window as OfferOnFirstRender, which App calls in one line. A test raises the window's ContentRendered through its own protected raiser and checks the target. The window is never shown, because a shown window reads the scenario list through the engine.
The handler stayed on the event. It now takes itself off before it offers, so a later ContentRendered cannot put the command line's target back over one the tester picked in the meantime. The same test raises the event a second time after a new pick.
Two files got the text for a file that is not a program. More than one file, on the command line or dropped on the window, is now refused as "One application at a time", in English and Polish, with a heading of its own. The drop had this wording since before this pull request, so the changelog lists it under Fixed.
Found while testing the hookup: the test host builds App for its resources, and WPF runs App.OnStartup for it with the test runner's own arguments. The window read them as files to run and put a modal refusal up in the middle of the test run, which hung a local run. App.TakesCommandLine is set off by the host before it builds the App.
The App line itself is not reachable from the test host, which may hold only one Application. The release checks start the packaged window with an argument, and that covers it end to end.
TargetDropTests 19 of 19, with the localization and glossary tests 47 of 47. Five mutation entries, all caught, two of them new. Live on the dev window, two files raise the new refusal. format-cs, metrics-pin, hygiene and names pass.
ChronoMock.exe <program or shortcut> fills the form as a drop on the window does,
so "Open with" in Explorer and a program dropped on the window's icon land in it.
Nothing starts until Start.
The rule is the drop's, in one place: DroppedTarget.FromCommandLine takes exactly
one file named .exe or .lnk, reads a relative name from the folder the window was
started in, and answers no target for a name no full path can be made of. The drop
and the command line share one offer in the window, so a refusal - a file that is
not a program, a program that is not there, more than one file - comes up in the
same words either way.
The offer runs once the window has been drawn (ContentRendered). Offered at Loaded,
the refusal came up before the first frame and stood on the screen alone, with the
window missing from the automation tree. It is awaited in a handler, as the drop
is, so a fault reaches the dispatcher's net at once.
Measured on the dev window: an absolute path, a relative name with the working
folder set, a text file, a missing program and two files each did what they should,
and a valid program raised no dialog. Two tests, one through a real MainWindow.
Three mutation entries, all caught. format-cs, metrics-pin, hygiene and names pass.

The application now accepts a program or shortcut from the command line and offers it as a target after the window renders. The target remains idle until the user starts a session. The README and changelog describe command-line launch.

DroppedTarget.FromCommandLine accepts exactly one argument, resolves it against the startup folder, and applies the existing candidate rules. The window routes dropped and command-line targets through shared offer handling. Tests cover accepted and refused inputs and verify that offering a target does not start a session.
The application offers startup arguments after the window renders. The integration test checks that the program becomes the session target while the session remains idle. The changelog and README describe command-line launch.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR changes runtime behavior in App, MainWindow, and DroppedTarget, and it adds tests in TargetDropTests.cs. The tests cover relative and absolute command-line paths, .exe and .lnk handling, empty or multiple arguments, unsupported extensions, invalid paths, null characters, target assignment, and the idle state. The test diff only adds tests; it does not delete, skip, or weaken existing assertions.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
PASS. The PR adds no CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. Added code contains no credentials, tokens, private URLs, personal emails, machine/user-specific paths, or debug output calls. The Windows paths in the new test are generic fixtures such as C:\work and C:\apps.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
The PR changes WPF code-behind only for startup target intake and offer handling. The diff adds no literal colors, fonts, font sizes, margins, paddings, sizes, corner radii, or duplicated controls. No XAML styling changes are present.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem is introduced. DroppedTarget.FromCommandLine performs only one argument-count check, path normalization, and extension check. The UI offer awaits the existing TargetIntake.TakeAsync path, which runs file and shortcut checks inside Task.Run; it does not perform blocking I/O on the UI thread. The change processes one command-line target and adds no large collection, nested scan, polling, or per-item external call.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
The changed code only adds command-line target intake and routes it through the existing drop offer. It does not load assets relative to the working directory, write settings/data files, parse or save numbers/dates, add a destructive action, request admin rights, or make network calls. The relative path use is limited to resolving the user-supplied application path with Path.GetFullPath(..., Environment.CurrentDirectory), not loading an asset. No new long-running operation or background worker is evident in the diff.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
PASS — The PR does not add parsing or serialization for XML, XAML, JSON, CSV, YAML, archives, or settings. DroppedTarget.FromCommandLine only calls Path.GetFullPath on one command-line string and applies the existing extension check. The new offer path reuses existing TargetIntake; it does not execute the target, and startup remains idle. The existing shortcut reader bounds shell text to 32768 characters, avoids Resolve, and catches malformed-link I/O, COM, access, and argument errors. No new unsafe file parsing or formula/entity/deserialization behavior is introduced.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR does not modify the listed system state. The changed code resolves command-line paths, checks target files, and updates the in-memory session target. TargetIntake.Look only reads files, and the new startup path does not start a process. No changes affect network rules, proxies, firewalls, system time, process injection, services, registry, or drivers. The reversibility requirements are therefore not applicable.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
No scope, duplication, documentation, or compatibility warning condition is present. The diff is limited to command-line target intake, its startup wiring, focused tests, and mutation cases. MainWindow sends both drops and command-line targets through the existing TargetIntake service; DroppedTarget.FromCommandLine reuses Candidate rather than adding a parallel validation path. README.md documents ChronoMock.exe <path>, and CHANGELOG.md documents the command-line behavior. The new helper is internal, and the added argument is backward-compatible.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The new command-line path sends multiple arguments through OfferAsync(..., anyFiles: true), which displays the existing singular title “That file cannot be run here” and the body “Only programs (.exe) and shortcuts to them can be run from this window.” This does not explain that the user supplied multiple files, although multiple command-line inputs are explicitly rejected by FromCommandLine. The body also gives no corrective action for this case. The PR therefore introduces a new user-facing error case with unclear text.
Resolution
Use a distinct command-line count refusal. Suggested title: “Choose one program or shortcut”. Suggested body: “Start ChronoMock with exactly one program (.exe) or shortcut (.lnk). Remove the extra command-line arguments and try again.” Keep the existing drop text for drag-and-drop input.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
The PR adds window.ContentRendered += async (_, _) => await window.OfferStartupTargetAsync(e.Args) in App.OnStartup and never removes this event handler. The delegate captures the startup window and e.Args and remains attached for the window lifetime. Use a named one-shot handler and unsubscribe it in finally after the first ContentRendered event.
Resolution
Replace the anonymous subscription with a named handler that removes itself before or in finally around OfferStartupTargetAsync. Ensure the handler is detached even when startup target intake or the refusal dialog fails.

The commit-time idle guard prevents this race.
TargetIntake.TakeAsync checks _session.IsIdle after the asynchronous inspection completes and before calling SetTarget or SetTargetFromShortcut. A session that starts while inspection is pending therefore keeps its existing target.

Test the application-startup hookup.
TargetDropTests calls OfferStartupTargetAsync directly on an unshown MainWindow. It does not exercise App.OnStartup, the ContentRendered subscription, or command-line argument intake. Removing that subscription can leave the PR's tests green while breaking the user workflow.
Add a WPF integration test that starts App with one argument, allows ContentRendered to run, and asserts the target.
