What

CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR, set to a full path, holds the window's session history and diagnostics logs in place of %LOCALAPPDATA%\ChronoMock.

  • WritableFolder.ForApp(name) reads the variable at every call. Unset or empty, nothing changes: the per-user folder as before.
  • A value that is not a full path - relative, drive relative (Y:data), rooted without a drive (\data), quoted, blank - is refused. The window does not come up and the startup box names the variable and the value. It never writes into the folder the window was started from.
  • A full path is normalised (.. resolved) and the window keeps history and logs directly under it.
  • The test assembly names a fresh folder under the temp path in a module initializer, before its first test, and removes it as the run ends.

Why

Windows answers the per-user folder from the account's settings, so LOCALAPPDATA cannot move it, and nothing else could. Two things needed it:

  • A release check that drives the packaged window through real sessions would write them into the history of the account it runs under.
  • The window's tests already wrote there. App saves a dispatcher fault to FileDiagnosticsLog.ForApp(), the test host builds a real App, and the tests that raise a fault on purpose left a diagnostics log in the account's folder on every run. The folder keeps only the newest logs, so a test run could push out a real one. Every test that builds MainWindow also read the account's history.

Checked

  • DataFolderTests: the per-user default through ForApp(name, null), four full paths (trailing separator, .., UNC), six refused values with the variable and the value in the message, and the test run's own folder in place of the account's.
  • Mutation entries, run locally with -Only: four new (data-dir …: the variable never read, any value accepted, the value taken as written, the test run not naming its folder) and two re-anchored on the moved line (msi window-not-told, r5-6b B4 files beside the executable). 15 of 15 caught.
  • The ten test classes that build MainWindow, plus DataFolderTests and CalculatorViewBindingTests (the fault-net test): 139/139. The account's folder had the same files, sizes and times before and after. With the clean-up switched off, the fault-net test's log was found in the run's folder.
  • Live on the dev window: with the variable set, a session on a probe started, stopped on Works, and its history landed in the named folder, the account's folder unchanged. With relative\data the main window did not come up and "Chrono Mock - startup failed" named the variable and the value.
  • format-cs, metrics-pin, cargo test -p chrono-cli --test hygiene 28/28, --test msi 14/14, --test names 6/6.

README, SECURITY.md and the installer readme name the variable where they say where the window keeps its files.

Review round (5e52fb8)

CodeRabbit, one finding, valid and confirmed on .NET 10.0.13 before the fix: Y:\data|bad, Y:\da*ta, Y:\data\what?, Y:\data\a<b, Y:\data\stream:x and a quote inside the path all pass Path.IsPathFullyQualified and come back from Path.GetFullPath unchanged (.NET stopped checking path characters in Core 2.1), and Directory.CreateDirectory then fails. The window would have come up, its diagnostics logs would have failed in silence and the first history save would have failed without naming the variable.

Every folder past the root is now checked against Path.GetInvalidFileNameChars(), the root (a share's host) against " < > | * ?, and the startup box names the variable and the value as it does for a relative one. DataFolderTests 19 to 26, two new mutation entries (a folder, a share's host) and one re-anchored, -Only 'data-dir|r5-6b B4|msi window-not-told' 12 of 12 caught. format-cs, metrics-pin, hygiene 28/28.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The window keeps its session history and diagnostics logs in the per-user
folder, and Windows answers that folder from the account's settings, so
LOCALAPPDATA cannot move it. A release check that drives the window, and the
window's own tests, had no way to leave the history of the account they run
under alone: the fault-net tests left a diagnostics log in that account's folder
on every run, where keeping only the newest logs can push out a real one.

CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR, set to a full path, now holds history and logs in place of
%LOCALAPPDATA%\ChronoMock. A value that is not a full path (relative, drive
relative, rooted without a drive, quoted, blank) stops the window at start with
the value named, rather than write into the folder the window was started from.
The test assembly names a fresh folder under the temp path before its first
test and removes it as the run ends.

README, SECURITY.md and the installer readme name the variable. Four new
mutation entries, two re-anchored on the moved line.

Walkthrough

CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR can direct session history and diagnostics logs to a specified full path. Unset or empty values retain the per-user folder; other non-full-path values cause startup-related folder resolution to throw. Tests, mutation cases, and documentation cover the behavior.

WritableFolder reads CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR and uses a normalized full path when configured. Tests cover default, valid, and invalid values, and configure a temporary test-run folder with process-exit cleanup. Mutation cases cover changes to path selection and validation. Documentation describes the override and its relationship to session history and diagnostics logs.

Setting CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR to a full path that contains invalid characters is not rejected at startup. It fails later when the window writes history or logs, with a message that does not name the variable. The effect is limited to misconfiguration, so the change is mergeable, with this validation gap as a small follow-up.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

The runtime change is in WritableFolder.ForApp: it reads CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR, accepts normalized full paths, preserves the per-user default for null or empty values, and rejects non-full paths. DataFolderTests adds coverage for all of these cases and verifies the test-run folder. TestDataFolder sets the variable before tests and cleans the folder at process exit. Existing tests remain present; the default assertion was updated to cover null and empty overrides, which the PR description explains.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

The pull-request diff adds no private AI-agent files, .env files, credentials, tokens, personal data, or debug output. The absolute paths (Y:\data and \\server\share\data) are generic test fixtures, not private machine paths or internal host data. The test-run folder is generated under the system temporary directory.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

PASS: The pull request does not change XAML, Slint, or WPF code-behind. Its GUI-project changes are limited to DataFolderTests.cs, TestDataFolder.cs, and the non-UI Session/WritableFolder.cs; added code handles paths, environment variables, and tests. No added UI styling literals or copied controls are present.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No clear performance problem is introduced. WritableFolder.ForApp adds one environment-variable read and path normalization, and its callers use it during window construction or fault handling, not in a per-item loop or polling path. Test cleanup recursively deletes only at process exit and does not run on the UI thread.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes folder resolution and test cleanup only. WritableFolder validates and normalizes CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR; it does not load assets, parse culture-sensitive values, start operations, request admin rights, or add network APIs. Existing history writes remain sibling-temp-file plus move (SessionHistory.Write), and diagnostics writes remain the existing best-effort path. The new ProcessExit cleanup is test-only. No explicit desktop-robustness failure condition is introduced.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

No unsafe file parsing is introduced. The PR changes folder selection only. WritableFolder.ForApp accepts a fully qualified CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR, normalizes it with Path.GetFullPath, and appends fixed names (history or logs). Relative values are rejected. The changed JSON file contains mutation-test metadata, not application input parsing. Existing System.Text.Json history parsing is unchanged.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes the application data-folder selection and test-run directory cleanup. The diff does not add or change network filters/rules, proxy, firewall, system time, process hooking/injection, Windows services, registry, or drivers. Therefore the reversibility warning condition does not apply.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The change is scoped to the documented CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR feature, its focused tests, mutation cases, and test-run isolation helper. SessionHistory and DiagnosticsLog still use the existing WritableFolder layer, so no parallel storage path or architecture bypass was added. User-facing documentation is updated in README.md, CHANGELOG.md, SECURITY.md, and packaging/msi-readme.md. The override is opt-in; unset or empty values retain the existing per-user location, so no backward-incompatible persisted-data change is introduced.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The PR adds a startup error that explains the invalid value but does not explicitly tell the user how to correct it. WritableFolder.ForApp throws CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR is set to "...", which is not a full path, so Chrono Mock does not know where to keep its history and logs. (gui/ChronoMock.App/Session/WritableFolder.cs:54-57). App.OnStartup shows this exception message in the startup-failure box (App.xaml.cs:67-78). The message says what happened, but it does not say to set a full path or unset the variable.

Resolution

Replace the message with actionable text, for example: CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR is set to "{value}", which is not a full path. Set it to a full path, or unset it to use %LOCALAPPDATA%\ChronoMock. Chrono Mock cannot start until this is corrected.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The new test helper registers an anonymous AppDomain.CurrentDomain.ProcessExit handler at TestDataFolder.cs:22 and never unsubscribes it. Its Remove() method also catches IOException and UnauthorizedAccessException at lines 34–40 without retrying, leaving the unique Root directory and its history/log files in the temp folder. Repeated failed test-run cleanup can accumulate these directories.

Resolution

Use a named ProcessExit handler and unsubscribe it in a finally block after cleanup. Make cleanup reliable by retrying deletion after transient file-lock errors, or remove stale chrono-test-data run directories at the next test startup while preserving the current run.

.NET has not checked path characters since Core 2.1. Y:\data|bad, a wildcard,
a quote, a stream colon past the root or a share host with | passed both
IsPathFullyQualified and GetFullPath, the window came up, its diagnostics logs
failed in silence and the first history save failed without naming
CHRONOMOCK_DATA_DIR. Every folder past the root is now checked against the
characters no file name can have, the root against the ones no drive or share
can have, and the startup box names the variable and the value as it does for
a relative one.

Seven new cases, two new mutation entries, one re-anchored.
