fix(hook): a thread without thread-local storage passes the hook's flags by - #147
The hook keeps a few flags per thread (thread_local!): the cascade flags of the wait and timer detours, the flag of its own clock calls and the flag of a CreateProcess call in progress. A thread can reach a hooked wait or clock without the storage those flags live in - one Windows is ending, after the loader freed that storage (LdrShutdownThread), or one started without it. The compiled read of a thread-local goes through the TEB's ThreadLocalStoragePointer, which is null then, so the read faulted inside the detour.
Measured on two real programs before the fix:
one hung at the start of its session, every time with the environment it was started from. The thread that had loaded the hook was ending, the heap called a hooked wait while it freed that thread's storage, the fault's handler (__CxxFrameHandler3, __vcrt_getptd, calloc) asked the same heap for memory, and the heap lock was the thread's own. TEB+0x58 read 0 on the hung thread. The core gave up after 10 s with code 2, "the target's loading is stuck". With a minimal environment the same program started, so whether it happened depended on the heap's state.
in another, a helper process crashed in the hook at the same read.
The change
thread_has_tls makes the two reads the compiler makes for a thread-local first, the TEB's vector and this module's slot in it (gs:[0x58] on x64, fs:[0x2C] on x86, then _tls_index), so they never fault.
Every flag read and write goes through it: read_flag, set_flag and its restore, enter_once, the QPC detour's own-clock check and the CreateProcess flag.
Without the storage a wait or timer detour passes the call through unscaled and uncounted, because it cannot tell an application's call from a cascade, and scaling at every level of a cascade would be wrong by its power. The QPC detour treats the call as the hook's own. A CreateProcess call still inherits its child, and its funnel call counts as a direct NtCreateUserProcess once too often.
Evidence
New test a_thread_without_thread_local_storage_passes_every_flag_by: it takes the TEB vector from its own thread for a moment, then puts in a vector whose slot for this module is empty, and checks that no flag helper reads, writes or enters, and that the thread reads its flags again once the storage is back. A fault there is the bug itself.
Four mutation entries (no-tls a to d), each caught locally.
Local gates: clippy, clippy-pin, build x64 and x86, deny. Guards: hygiene, names, shape, hook_integrity.
Review round
One finding, taken: a wait, object wait or timer passed through on a thread without storage ran unscaled and was counted nowhere, so a report could say works while part of the application ran on the real clock.
Cov gains calls_without_storage after every other field, so CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION is 14. enter_detour counts a call there when enter_once let it by for want of storage, for the wait, object-wait and timer detours.
The core names it with wait.thread_without_storage, next to the two floor keys, glossed by the CLI report in describe_thread_warning (reached through the last arm of describe_warning, which stays at its length ceiling) and translated for the window.
The thread that loaded the hook is left out of the count. It is the injector's, ran none of the application's code, and is the very thread measured losing its storage as it ended, so counting it would name a gap the hook's own start made.
Like the two floor keys it is a caution beside the verdict, not a change of it.
QueryPerformanceCounter is not counted. On such a thread it cannot tell the application's call from the hook's own read, and a count would name a gap the hook made itself.
New test a_call_on_a_thread_without_storage_is_reported, two more mutation entries (no-tls e, no-tls f), six of six caught locally. wire_keys, hygiene, names, shape, clippy, clippy-pin and both builds pass, and the window's localization tests too.
Not covered
The QPC own-clock choice and the CreateProcess flag on a thread without storage have no unit test. They are the same gate, but no test drives those two detours on such a thread.
The count itself, enter_detour and the loader-thread exception, have no unit test: they write to a live coverage slot, which a unit test does not have. The key and its words do.
Not yet measured live: whether the warning stays quiet on the program that used to hang (the call there was on the loader thread). A release-suite run held the machine's one session while this round was written.
…ags by
A thread can reach a hooked wait or clock without the storage the hook's
per-thread flags live in - while Windows ends it, after the loader freed
that storage, or when it started without any. The compiled read of a
thread-local went through a null TEB pointer and faulted inside the
detour. On an ending thread, inside a heap call, the fault's handler then
waited on the thread's own heap lock, so a program could hang at the
start of its session until the core gave up with code 2, depending on the
environment it started with. Elsewhere a helper process crashed.
thread_has_tls makes the two reads the compiler makes for a thread-local,
the TEB's vector and this module's slot in it, before any flag is read or
written. Without the storage a wait or timer detour passes the call
through unscaled, because it cannot tell an application's call from a
cascade, the QPC detour treats the call as the hook's own, and a
CreateProcess call still inherits its child.
The new test takes the vector, then this module's slot, from its own
thread for a moment and checks that every flag helper does nothing.

The gate that always says the storage is there, the gate that does not
look for this module's slot, a cascade entered without the storage and a
flag written without it. Each one is caught by the test that takes the
storage away.

Hooked calls now check for the module’s thread-local storage before accessing flags. When storage is unavailable, the affected paths avoid flag access and pass calls through to Windows without scaling.
Changes: TLS-safe hook behavior

Summary
TLS detection and guarded flag operations crates/hook/src/lib.rs, tests/mutation/entries.json
Added TLS availability checks and guarded flag reads, writes, restoration, and cascade entry. Tests cover missing TLS storage, and mutation entries target the TLS gates and flag handling.
Apply guarded access in hook paths crates/hook/src/lib.rs, CHANGELOG.md
h_qpc now treats an unavailable OWN_CLOCK flag as an internal call. Process-creation hooks use the spawning() helper. The changelog describes pass-through behavior when TLS storage is unavailable.
Hooked waits and timers on threads without thread-local storage now pass through to Windows instead of crashing. Those calls are neither scaled nor counted in the audit, so a session can still be reported as working when some application waits ran at real speed. Record these calls in coverage before merging, or explicitly accept the gap.

Explanation
The pull request changes only CHANGELOG.md, crates/hook/src/lib.rs, and tests/mutation/entries.json. The diff contains Rust hook logic, tests, mutation data, and documentation. It does not add or change XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, or WPF GUI code.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No explicit performance failure condition is introduced. The PR adds fixed-cost thread-local pointer/slot checks to hook paths and flag helpers, with no blocking I/O, heavy computation, large collection processing, per-item external calls, or excessive polling. Any constant overhead in the QPC path is a micro-optimization concern excluded by this check.

Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
The PR does not add file parsing or import/export behavior. The four tests/mutation/entries.json records are static mutation metadata with a fixed in-repository path and Rust source replacements. The existing registry reader uses System.Text.Json.JsonDocument::Parse and converts JSON to plain values; no arbitrary-type deserialization or external-entity processing is introduced. crates/hook/src/lib.rs only adds TLS and flag logic, with no file APIs.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The PR adds one user-facing changelog entry. It clearly states the affected condition, the observed hang or crash, and the new pass-through behavior. The code and mutation-entry additions contain comments or test metadata, not user-facing controls, errors, confirmations, or labels. No tooltip, vague button label, raw exception, or inconsistent user-facing term requires a warning.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced. The PR changes TLS flag checks and stack-scoped guards (FlagRestore, SpawningGuard), plus a test using a stack array and restoring the TEB TLS vector. It adds no timers, handlers, threads, processes, files, handles, native allocations, or unbounded collections, and it does not change existing resource-release paths.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The diff is scoped to the described TLS-safety fix, its mutation tests, and a matching CHANGELOG entry. The description covers the new thread_has_tls, flag-helper behavior, detour pass-through behavior, tests, and known test gaps. Repository search found no existing duplicate TLS or flag helpers. No public API, CLI, configuration, persisted format, or build requirement changed.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR changes process-hook behavior. In h_cpiw, SPAWNING.get() becomes spawning(), which returns false without TLS and can now reach inherit_into_child; that function calls inject_self, which writes to the child and starts CreateRemoteThread (crates/hook/src/lib.rs:3236-3244, 2989-3003, 2827-2895). The hook lifecycle has rollback only when installation fails (enable_or_take_back), while pin_self keeps the DLL loaded and self-detach only forwards calls after the core stops. No normal stop path disables/removes live detours or restores the original code, and no visible restore mechanism covers stop or restart.
Resolution
Add an explicit teardown transaction for every installed detour and injected allocation. Save the original hook state before enabling, disable/remove all live hooks and release child resources when the session stops or installation unwinds, and expose that stop/restore operation. Ensure crash and next-start recovery detects stale injected state and restores it. Alternatively, keep the no-TLS h_cpiw path as a plain forward to avoid initiating injection when the guard cannot be tracked.
Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title is truncated and ungrammatical. It ends with "passes the hook's flags by" and omits the verb phrase "unscaled" or "through". It also does not say what changes for users or the code. The changeset adds TLS presence checks in crates/hook/src/lib.rs so that threads without the hook's thread-local storage pass calls through unscaled instead of hanging or crashing. The title names the right area (fix(hook), thread-local storage, flags), so it is partly related. However, a reader of the git history could not understand the change from the title alone.
Resolution
Finish the title so it states the fix in plain language. Example: "fix(hook): pass clock and wait calls through unscaled on threads without TLS". Keep it under about 140 characters and name the observable effect (hang or crash).

Record no-TLS waits and timers in coverage.
When a thread has no TLS, enter_once returns None for both an internal cascade and an application call. try_enter_wait and try_enter_timer then skip bump(idx) and forward the call unchanged. A scaling wait or timer can therefore run at real speed without appearing in the audit; a real-time-by-design object wait is also omitted from its call count. Record this no-TLS fallback in the process coverage data and ensure it prevents a clean WORKS verdict.
The counters are process-owned shared coverage data, not TLS state, so this can be tracked without reading the missing TLS slot. The changelog documents the unscaled fallback to avoid the crash, but it does not accept silently omitting the operation from the audit.

…torage is named in the report
A wait, object wait or timer passed through on a thread without
thread-local storage ran unscaled and was counted nowhere, so a report
could say works while part of the application ran on the real clock.
Each such call now counts in a new field of the process's coverage slot,
calls_without_storage, and the core names it with the warning key
wait.thread_without_storage, glossed by the CLI report and translated for
the window.
The thread that loaded the hook is left out of the count. It is the
injector's, ran none of the application's code, and is the thread
measured losing its storage as it ended.
QueryPerformanceCounter is not counted, because on such a thread it
cannot tell the application's call from the hook's own read.
Cov grew, so CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION is 14. Two more mutation entries, for
the warning and for its words in the report.

What
The hook keeps a few flags per thread (
thread_local!): the cascade flags of the wait and timer detours, the flag of its own clock calls and the flag of a CreateProcess call in progress. A thread can reach a hooked wait or clock without the storage those flags live in - one Windows is ending, after the loader freed that storage (LdrShutdownThread), or one started without it. The compiled read of a thread-local goes through the TEB'sThreadLocalStoragePointer, which is null then, so the read faulted inside the detour.Measured on two real programs before the fix:

The core gave up after 10 s with code 2, "the target's loading is stuck". With a minimal environment the same program started, so whether it happened depended on the heap's state. The change
thread_has_tlsmakes the two reads the compiler makes for a thread-local first, the TEB's vector and this module's slot in it (gs:[0x58]on x64,fs:[0x2C]on x86, then_tls_index), so they never fault.read_flag,set_flagand its restore,enter_once, the QPC detour's own-clock check and the CreateProcess flag.NtCreateUserProcessonce too often.Evidence
a_thread_without_thread_local_storage_passes_every_flag_by: it takes the TEB vector from its own thread for a moment, then puts in a vector whose slot for this module is empty, and checks that no flag helper reads, writes or enters, and that the thread reads its flags again once the storage is back. A fault there is the bug itself.no-tls atod), each caught locally.mainin the same minute: code 2 after 10 s. The released 0.4.0 started it too, so for that program this is a regression since 0.4.0, which a bisect put on fix(core): a console program that ends at once ends its session, and Rust programs see the session zone #146. The faulting read itself predates 0.4.0. fix(core): a console program that ends at once ends its session, and Rust programs see the session zone #146 only changed what the heap does on that path.Review round
