feat(groom): a global detail bias, and a dithered cross-fade across LOD hand-overs (#1616, #1612) - #1631
Conversation
A graphics preset could not trade groom detail for frame time: the LOD
thresholds were fixed pixel sizes. RendererSettings::GroomDetailBias divides
every pixel threshold a groom's detail is chosen by -- the GroomLodComponent
tier edges and budget curves, the coat shadow's LOD and the ray-traced proxy's
tier -- applied once where Scene assembles the frame's policy, so the
component keeps its authored numbers.
The presets carry it (Low 0.5, Medium 0.75, High 1, Ultra 1.5), the project
and manifest YAML persist it (a missing key loads as the preset's, a
non-finite one keeps it), the quality panel has a slider, the Groom LOD
inspector shows the effective card edge, and OLO_GROOM_DETAIL_BIAS is a
console variable that views the renderer setting rather than copying it.
The RT proxy follows the bias so it keeps handing over below the raster card
edge: at a fixed 192 px, a bias of 2 would put a coat on the 768-strand proxy
while it still rasterised every strand.
Bias 1 is bit-identical to no bias (dividing by exactly one is the IEEE
identity; GroomLodDetailBias pins policies and decisions frame by frame), and
tier selection is monotone in it. GroomDetailBias{High,Low}_GL_<Path>.png
show the hand-over moving on all three GL paths with the coat's coverage kept.

A representation hand-over was a hard switch: whatever strands and cards disagree about in coverage and energy landed in one frame. For a 12-frame window after each switch Scene now publishes the coat twice -- the primary on the tier the decision selected (Incoming, keeps h < t) and a copy on the tier it is leaving (Outgoing, keeps h >= t) -- with t = frame / (frames + 1) and h one per-pixel, per-frame hash (the stochastic test's, segment 0, own seed), so the two masks cover each pixel exactly once and TAA integrates the ramp. Every pass that rasterises a tier applies the mask from the same lane: the strand shader before its coverage test (so the depth prepass, shading, velocity and G-buffer outputs agree), and the CSM/atlas and VSM groom casters per shadow texel. The copy is the same coat: per-groom counters, the ray-traced proxy and the "another coat casts" bit skip it, its VSM caster key is its own, and a fading caster invalidates its pages every frame. The per-entity Scene work runs once and is copied to the partner; on the CPU root path both tiers' curves are evaluated in one pass. RendererSettings::GroomLodCrossFadeFrames (12; 0 is the old hard switch) and GroomLodMaxCrossFades (4) bound a transition frame, which costs about both tiers' GroomPass time. A hand-over past the cap hard-switches and reports GroomLodFallbackReason::CrossFadeBudgetSpent. A switch back mid-window reverses it. The panels and the MCP groom budget snapshot show the counters. Measured (GroomLodVisualEvidenceTest, stochastic coat, TAA, dolly through the hand-over): the hard switch steps the coat's area-normalised light 3.4-3.9% in one frame; the cross-fade's largest step is 0.81-0.88% on Forward, Forward+ and Deferred, landing within 0.4% of the same total change. Without TAA 0.70%, no hole. The coat's shadow on the ground steps 0.0177 hard and at most 0.0055 faded; with the caster mask removed the fade's step is 0.0151, which fails. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Scene drops a streamed coat's temporal history -- its deformation history and the whole frame's TAA and ray-traced shadow history -- when its residency changes, and it detected that by comparing the request's StreamingKey across frames. That key names the geometry: it mixes the LOD tier and the strand budget. So every card hand-over and every visibility halving of a streamed coat read as a residency change and flickered the whole frame, which an unstreamed coat on the same tier change never does (a tier change draws a new stream with correct motion from the previous pose). It would also have reset the TAA history a #1612 cross-fade integrates. The comparison is now on GroomStreamingResidencyToken: 0 while the coat draws what its own LOD asked for, 1 while residency demoted it (StreamingFallback names a reason). StreamingFloor alone is not a demotion: the resolve takes the floor branch when the LOD's own request already is the floor. Found while wiring #1612's cross-fade through the publish loop. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Two self-review passes over the cross-fade, every finding fixed: - The outgoing copy is now a copy of the whole primary after deformation with only its tier and streaming resolve restored (AdoptGroomCrossFadePrimary). The hand-mirrored list it replaces missed the body its soft intersection ignores, which faded the outgoing tier at the skin. - It views the primary's roots (CrossFadeRootTransforms, DrawnRoots()) instead of copying a curve-count array -- 12 MB per fading 200k-strand coat per frame. Renderer3D's copying SetGroomStrandRequests re-points a copied partner at its copied primary. - The casters dither through a cross-fade-only variant (GroomStrandDepthCrossFade.glsl, VSM_GroomDepthCrossFade.glsl), switched per caster, so a steady coat keeps a discard-free program and its early depth test. Their includes are unconditional: the engine's include expander pastes text and does not evaluate #ifdef, so an include in a dead branch claimed the file the live branch needed and the VSM variant would never have compiled (glslc, which does evaluate it, passed it). - The cap holds: a window on its last frame holds no slot, a reversal on that frame takes one or is refused (TookSlot), and the slot count follows it. - A refused cross-fade is a flag on the decision (CrossFadeRefused), counted whatever else explains the coat, and is not a fallback: IsFallback and DominantFallbackReason leave CrossFadeBudgetSpent out. - Caster tallies count coats, not requests, so a coat whose outgoing tier casts while its incoming one streams in still counts as casting. - The failure warning fires on a FAILED program only, once per failure. - OLO_GROOM_LOD_CROSSFADE_FRAMES and OLO_GROOM_LOD_MAX_CROSSFADES console variables beside OLO_GROOM_DETAIL_BIAS, so a live session can hold a long window. GroomSoftIntersectionVisualEvidenceTest forces a coat's tier (LOD on with a 16384 px card edge) and compares the contact fade on against off. With #1612 the switch from the previous capture's tier is a 12-frame cross-fade, and the stochastic coat's TAA history keeps the outgoing tier past the 16-frame settle, so the first card capture of each scene differed from its own repeat by ~26k pixels and the effect could not clear that floor. Its Capture now sets GroomLodCrossFadeFrames to 0 for the capture and restores it. Measured: the Cards_0 cells read changed 82 / 5468 / 4306 with repeat 0 -- identical to the base binary (fcaac34) -- and all six cases pass. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
GroomWetnessVisualEvidenceTest forces each capture's tier the way the soft-intersection test does (LOD on with a 16384 px card edge), and with #1612 the switch from the previous capture's tier became a cross-fade whose tail reached the capture. AHorseWadesAndADogLeavesWaterThroughADryWetDryingCycle failed its "low share" bar (16370 vs 29984). Capture now holds GroomLodCrossFadeFrames at 0 for the capture and restores it; all four cases pass. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…#1612) A fading coat's two tiers cover the same pixels through complementary masks, and drawing them prepass-shade per tier made the second tier's prepass run after the first tier's shading draw over those pixels. That cost the second tier's shading draw the early depth rejection the prepass exists for: on the dog at its hand-over (Release editor, Vulkan and GL alike) its shading cost exactly what it costs with no prepass, and a transition frame's GroomPass was 2.2 ms against 0.75 ms for the two tiers drawn alone. Two separate coats never showed it (they do not overlap), and neither a coarser mask (2x2, 8x8) nor drawing the strand tier first removed it. The first tier of a fading pair now holds its shading draw until its partner's prepass is down, carrying the bindings it needs to replay (coat volume, coat body, deformation buffer, vertex array). A held draw whose partner produced no geometry still shades at the end of the loop. Measured: the dog's window going out is 0.62 ms (was 2.22), coming in 1.15 ms (was 1.27). Every cross-fade evidence number is unchanged to four decimals, and all 172 groom LOD / soft-intersection / wetness / proxy / tiering / streaming / scene-shadow cases pass. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The held shading draw of a fading pair, the request's own draw and the restore after a replay bound the same five resources from three copies. They now share StrandDrawBindings and one bind, so a lane added later cannot reach one copy and miss the others. A held draw whose partner drew nothing now shades at the top of the next request, before that coat's prepass, instead of partway through it. A fading primary with no partner after it is asserted: it would quietly bring the lost early-Z back. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…#1612) A probe bake renders six cube faces through RenderScene3D between two frames, and each render published the grooms and advanced the LOD hysteresis and the cross-fade window from the probe's camera. With a bake after every frame the main view never handed over, and a shorter bake ate the fade window. The frame entry points now arm the advance; a later publish in the same frame decides from a copy of the state. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A fading tier's cached VSM pages hold its dithered silhouette. On a coat that neither deforms nor moves, nothing redrew them once the window closed: the outgoing tier's departure covers only its own footprint. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ASecondViewInOneFrameAdvancesNeitherTheLadderNorTheWindow runs a real light-probe bake after every frame (negative control: 0 hand-overs). TheFirstSteadyFrameAfterAFadeRedrawsTheCoatsVirtualShadow counts the invalidations (2 on the first steady frame; 1 without the fix). The dolly keeps each frame's film-strip tile instead of the whole readback, which held about 700 MB per walk. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
olo_groom_budget_stats emitted crossFading and crossFadesRefused without declaring them in its schema. The guide gains rules 10 and 11; the dog showcase guide states the measured step ratio instead of an ideal one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…1612) Deciding again from a copy of the state left a second view one fade frame ahead of the main one, and a view that wanted a finer tier opened a new window on every frame. It also overwrote the residency token and let a probe face that could not see a coat sweep away its hold. The frame's first publish now records each coat's LOD decision (before the population budget) and its fade, and a later publish in the same frame reuses them, as it already reuses the frame's simulated pose. Only the first publish compares the residency token and sweeps per-entity state. A coat that only a later view sees decides its tier from a copy and does not fade. BeginGroomFrame zeroes the clock and arms the advance at every frame entry point. The bake test now places the probe where it asks for strands and checks that the bake draws the frame's mix. Negative controls: advancing on every publish gives 0 hand-overs; deciding from a copy makes the bake disagree with its frame. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…1612) The LOD advances for every coat by distance, and the view cull ran after the cross-fade. A coat behind the camera that changed tier took a fade slot, and a visible coat handing over in the same window was refused. The relevance test now runs before the fade; a coat out of every view has its window closed on its tier, so it holds no slot. ACoatOutOfViewTakesNoCrossFadeSlot: one slot, a twin behind the camera. Negative control (the view test removed): 0 fading frames, 1 refused. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…ame (#1612) The slots running windows held were counted before the publish loop, before anyone knew whether those coats could still reach the view. A coat that left every view mid-fade kept its slot for that frame, and a visible coat handing over on the same frame was refused its fade. Coats whose window runs on into the frame are now decided first, and every window that draws takes its slot when its coat is decided, so a new hand-over sees exactly the slots the visible windows left. Closes #1616
Closes #1612
Part of #1223 (AAA groom hair and fur): its "convincing during motion and LOD transitions" criterion.
What changed
#1616: a global groom detail bias
RendererSettings::GroomDetailBiasdivides every pixel threshold that chooses a groom's detail:GroomLodComponenttier edges and its three budget curves;PixelSizeForLod0;It is applied once, where Scene assembles the frame's policy (

For
GroomLodCrossFadeFrames(12) frames after a representation change, Scene publishes the coat twice:h < t;h >= t.tramps asframe / (frames + 1).his a per-pixel, per-frame hash (the stochastic test's, with segment 0 and its own seed), so the two masks cover each pixel exactly once and TAA integrates the ramp.*CrossFade.glslcaster variant bound only for a fading caster, so steady casters keep a discard-free program.AdoptGroomCrossFadePrimary). The copy keeps only its own tier and streaming resolve, and it views the primary's roots rather than copying them.GroomLodMaxCrossFades(4) bounds a transition frame, which costs about both tiers' GroomPass time. A hand-over past the cap hard-switches, counts inCrossFadesRefused, and reportsCrossFadeBudgetSpent(not a fallback: the coat is on its tier). A switch back mid-window reverses the window instead of restarting it.This hides the step. It does not fix the energy mismatch between the tiers (#1608), and every existing bar is unchanged.

That key mixes the LOD tier and the strand budget, so every card hand-over and every visibility halving of a streamed coat dropped its deformation history and invalidated the whole frame's TAA and RT-shadow history. An unstreamed coat on the same change never did. Found while wiring the cross-fade through the publish loop. Pinned byGroomStreamingTest.ALodChangeIsNotAResidencyChangeAndOnlyADemotionIs.RenderScene3Dbetween two frames, and each render published the grooms and advanced the LOD hysteresis from the probe camera. The ladder half was already on master. With a bake after every frame, the main view never handed over (0 hand-overs in the negative control), and the bake's distance moved the main view's tier. The frame entry points now arm the advance. The frame's first publish records its LOD and fade decisions, and a later publish in the same frame reuses them, the way it already sees the frame's simulated pose. It doesn't compare the residency token or sweep per-entity state either, so a probe face that can't see a coat no longer erases its hold. Pinned byGroomLodVisualEvidenceTest.ASecondViewInOneFrameAdvancesNeitherTheLadderNorTheWindow, which runs a realLightProbeBakerbake after every frame. It also checks that the bake draws the frame's mix. Negative controls: advancing on every publish gives 0 hand-overs, and letting the bake decide from a copy gives a bake that disagrees with its frame. Raised by CodeRabbit.GroomLodVisualEvidenceTest.ACoatOutOfViewTakesNoCrossFadeSlot, which uses one slot and a twin behind the camera. Its negative control gives 0 fading frames and 1 refusal. Coats whose window runs on into the frame are decided first, and each takes its slot only once it's known to be in view. A count taken before the loop had kept a slot for a coat that left the view that frame (AFadingCoatThatLeavesTheViewGivesItsSlotToAVisibleOne: against the previous code, 0 fading and 1 refused). Where I'd look hardest
Scene.cpp,DeformGroomAgainstSurfacewith a partner: the streaming resolve, the CPU root path's merged curve selection, andAdoptGroomCrossFadePrimary. That's where "same coat, other tier" has to hold for every field.ShadowRenderPass.cpp,RenderGroomCasters's per-caster program switch. On VSM the physical pool image has to be rebound after every switch.GroomStrandRequest::CrossFadeRootTransforms: a span into the primary's heap block, valid because request relocation is bitwise and the block never moves. Pinned byThePartnerIsTheSameCoatOnItsOwnTierAndViewsThePrimarysRoots.GroomRenderPass::Execute, the held shading draw (HeldShade,StrandDrawBindings). A held draw must carry every resource its draw binds itself; everything else the loop binds is shared by the whole frame. It relies on the partner being the next request, which Scene guarantees and the pass asserts in Debug. What I verified, and how: the CPU contracts (
GroomLodDetailBias.*,GroomLodCrossFade.*, the proxy, tiering, persistence and cvar cases), the GL evidence above with its negative control, glslc on GL and Vulkan for all four caster programs and the strand shader, and the live cells in the matrix.Least confident about: the mechanism behind the prepass-ordering cost. I fixed it by measurement: the second tier's prepass running after the first tier's shading draw lost early depth rejection on both NVIDIA backends. A coarser mask and tier order were ruled out, and the two-phase order removes it. I didn't profile it with GPU counters. A driver or vendor with a different early-depth heuristic could behave differently, and the AMD CI box doesn't run these editor measurements.
