perf: ShadowPass attribution and atlas cull, VSM foliage card cut-over, RT vegetation budget, Vulkan transient staging - #1632
Conversation
GPU particle emit batches, GPU fluid emit batches and fluid body proxies allocated a fresh storage buffer per batch on Vulkan, so a dispatch still queued from an earlier frame could not read the next batch. They now copy the batch into the frame arena, which the frame fence already recycles, and bind that range through RenderCommand::BindTransientStorage; GL keeps its one reused buffer, which its upload ordering makes safe. The fluid emit's 3 ms "only inside a recording" was not the allocation: a 32-entry partial SetData into the mapped 4,096-entry staging buffer built a whole-buffer draw snapshot and filled the other ~127 KB by reading write-combined memory back, for a compute read that never looks at snapshots. RTX 4090, Release: emit plus its consuming step 2.86 ms -> 8.2 us (a step with nothing to emit: 8.8 us); particle emit 3.1 -> 1.4 us. The staging baseline now asserts a frame of emits and proxy steps creates no device allocation, times the emit together with the step that consumes it on both backends (fluid_emit_step_32 replaces fluid_emit_staging_32), and the delayed-read tests carry an in-place-reuse fault arm (OLO_FAULT_VULKAN_STAGING_REUSE) that must see the race. …and cull every atlas face (#1590) ShadowPass was the largest GPU pass at every outdoor camera of the #1259 acceptance scene, and only its foliage had brackets. Each view family now opens a region bracket (Csm, Atlas, VsmPages, VsmCull, VsmSun, VsmLocal) and each caster class a nested one (MeshCasters, SkinnedCasters, VoxelCasters, GroomCasters, TerrainCasters, FoliageCull, FoliageCasters, VirtualGeometry), through ShadowBrackets::Scope; GPUPassTimerPool takes two levels of sub-pass nesting and 1024 brackets a frame. The acceptance aggregator sums a sub-pass's repeats within one frame instead of keeping the first (it counted one of sixteen per-level VSM culls), and the live foliage script sums every family. CPU scopes name the pass's CPU phases, whose time the GPU span also counts. The brackets found the atlas route's 0.1-0.9 s: the foliage GPU cull has four shadow slots, and a region recorded in one batch gave every view past the fourth none, so a point light's fifth and sixth cube faces and every face of the lights after it drew the whole island's foliage uncompacted. RecordShadowRegion now culls and records such a region four views at a time. GL acceptance-forward-csm, RTX 4090, Release, ShadowPass p50: head-closeup 974-996 -> 14.1-14.3 ms, head-backlit 555-565 -> 5.4-5.7, rapid-turn 155-167 -> 20.8-21.8, coats-closeup 155-160 -> 23.1-24.9. ShadowAtlasFoliageCullEvidenceTest pins it on every path with a negative control (OLO_FAULT_SHADOW_FOLIAGE_CULL_CAP) and a positive one (no foliage in the shadow maps moves ~44,000 px, so the batched-vs-single comparison can see a moved shadow). …1580) The second half of the decision on #1580 (the texel-size invalidation rule shipped with #1259). The fine clip levels, texel finer than the wind bound, redraw foliage every frame, and in them it cast its authored mesh (a meadow tuft is ~1,250 triangles). Per layer, a clip level past SelectClipLevel(R), where R is how far from the eye the layer still draws its mesh, now casts the layer's cards: the quad the beauty pass draws past the mesh distance. Such a level is sampled only by receivers beyond the layer's mesh band, where the lit plant already is its card. One reach for every layer let a pine stand meshed to 87 m hold the meadow (12 m hand-over) at the pines' level; per layer, grass takes cards from L5. The cull builds no mesh region for a cards-only layer, RenderShadows skips its mesh parts and zeroes the card's hand-over band, each layer's level is computed once a frame (UpdateVsmCardCutover) and folded into the foliage's shadow revision. OLO_FOLIAGE_VSM_CARD_LEVEL overrides it. GL, 1080p, Release, VSM foliage casters at the traversal's Step0/4/8: Forward 13.0/21.4/8.4 -> 10.7/16.0/7.1 ms, Deferred 17.9/16.8/8.5 -> 15.9/11.9/7.0 ms. VsmCardCutoverKeepsTheShadowOfTheMeshBand: no change in the shadow factor on Deferred and at Step0/4 on every path; on Forward and Forward+ at Step8, 44 px of foreground grass by at most 31/255, where the sampler's two-level fallback walk reaches a card level (accepted). …casting plan (#1578) The decision on #1578 is to measure two remaining options and pick (the first, area-sized far casting groups, shipped with #1259; the vertex budget now binds). Both are wired end to end, off by default, and settable live through olo_rt_vegetation_diagnostic so one editor can sweep them: budgetScale option 2: the per-frame build/vertex/triangle limits times N, in the producers' casting plans (PlanRoom::Scaled), the cache's frame budget and the Vulkan backend's own (VegetationFrameBudget::Scaled). farErrorReference option 3: past this distance a casting proxy's declared error bound and age cap double per doubling of distance, up to 4x (VegetationPolicy::FarErrorScale), in whole power-of-two bands so a camera step inside a band does not rebucket the cache's refreshes. The plan's refresh rate, snapshot reuse and holds all read it. Contract tests pin the bands, the clamp and the scaled limits. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- GPUFluidSolver::Step binds a step's body proxies before its emit batch takes a frame-arena range, so a refused proxy bind leaves the pending batch and its count together (the count used to stay while the entries were reset, and the next step read past the array). - GPUParticleSystem's GL staging buffer keeps the allocation guard the fresh-allocation path had: a failed Create refuses the emit. - olo_perf_pass_timings strips only the parent's prefix from a sub-pass, so ShadowPass/Atlas/MeshCasters publishes as "Atlas/MeshCasters", not as a bare "MeshCasters" indistinguishable from the Csm one; acceptance-live.py sums a sub-pass's repeats within a frame instead of keeping the last. - #1578's levers: the plan's upgrade margin is a fraction of the scaled work limit, the far error scale applies to casting groups only, and a reference so small the ratio overflows is the cap rather than an undefined float-to-int cast. …ublish (#1590) Run after any FoliageCostBaselineTest, the positive control saw 0 px move: that fixture starts the task workers, after which a foliage regeneration publishes asynchronously, and the fixed 12-frame wait still drew the shipped layers in the foliage-off arm. The test now renders until IsRebuilding() clears, after the warm-up and after each CastShadows flip. Green alone and after the foliage cost tests (44k px moved on every path either way). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rena change (#1543) The particle/fluid staging keys, GL and Vulkan, re-captured with --olo-perf-rebase from the Release test binary on the quiet dev box (RTX 4090, i7-14700KF, driver 617.42). The keys they replace were Debug captures (250 us for a Vulkan particle emit that is 1.4 us in Release), so a regression would never have reached their 1.5x warn level. The new keys vk_/gl_fluid_emit_step_32 time an emit with the step that reads it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…env in the acceptance driver (#1590) OLO_NO_SHADOWPASS_BRACKETS=1 opens no family or caster-class bracket, so what the brackets cost can be measured. acceptance-benchmark.py cells take an optional "env" map applied to that cell's processes only (recorded per run), so a lever can be A/B'd as two cells of one interleaved campaign. Measured with both (GL Forward VSM acceptance cell, RTX 4090, Release, three interleaved runs per arm): ShadowPass moves by at most ~0.3 ms at any camera with the brackets off, e.g. head-closeup 18.9-19.5 on vs 18.7-19.2 off. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…cked by a live sweep (#1578) The three #1578 options, measured live on the Vulkan editor (RTX 4090, Release) in the IntegratedRenderer meadow at three poses: - Option 1 (coarser far casting groups) is already on master (dd9421a, area-grouped far cards): builds are 243-274 of the 1024 limit, so the build count no longer binds anywhere. - Option 2 (a larger budget) is what frees the meadow, once memory scales with it: at 2x work alone the 64 MiB of geometry binds inside; at 2x work and 2x memory the plan leaves no group out at any pose. - Option 3 (a far error bound) frees no pose the doubled budget does not, and loosens a declared bound, so it stays an off-by-default lever. Shipped: VerticesPerFrame 2M, TrianglesPerFrame 1M, GeometryBytes and AccelerationStructureBytes 128 MiB (UpdatesPerFrame stays 1024). Ten samples per cell, shipped vs the old limits (budgetDivisor 2): pose shadow TLAS withheld groups out resident geometry inside 0/10 vs 10/10 0 vs 31 93 MB vs 52 MB edge 0/10 vs 10/10 0 vs 14 81 MB vs 52 MB overview 0/10 vs 0/10 0 vs 0 11 MB Cost: RayTracingScenePass +2-2.5 ms inside, +3 ms at the edge, plus the 2.0-2.6 ms RayTracedShadowPass that now runs instead of the raster fallback. New lever memoryScale (olo_rt_vegetation_diagnostic) multiplies both memory limits through VegetationPolicy::GeometryByteLimit / AccelerationByteLimit, which every enforcing check now calls (plan room, cache staging and residency, the producer's queue check, the backend's BLAS cap), so the plan never admits what the cache would refuse. Fixed on the way: with a far-error reference set the plan charged a far group the looser bound's AVERAGE refresh rate, but the cache refreshes on bucket boundaries in bursts, so at the meadow edge it intermittently refused a group the plan had admitted and withheld the TLAS (5 of 5 samples at 25 m). Plans now charge the declared bound's rate (RefreshRate lost its errorScale); the far bound only lets the cache reuse and hold longer. 0 of 10 withheld after the fix. …re returning Pre-existing on master. Once any fixture in the process has started the task workers (FoliageCostBaselineTest, VulkanPassSuite, ...), a foliage regeneration publishes asynchronously (the staged rebuild), so a test that renders a fixed frame count after m_NeedsRebuild draws the layers from before it. Two touched-area sweeps failed eight such tests between them (alpha-coverage warning, wind, leaf transmission, instance identity, habitat, LOD coverage), each green alone. RendererAttachedTest::RunEditorFrames now keeps ticking until no FoliageComponent in the fixture's scene has a regeneration pending or in flight (failing after 30 s). The two tests that watch a rebuild in flight (FoliageCostBaselineTest, FloraLooseCookedParityEvidenceTest) drive their scenes through RunEditorFramesOn, which is unchanged. The sweep of *Shadow*/*Foliage*/*Flora*/*Vegetation*/Mcp*/staging/fluid/particle/ VulkanPassSuite/RayTracingDevice/VSM suites: 2065 passed, 8 skipped, 0 failed. …ers and driver - The memory limits come from a runtime lever now, so a scale lowered while more than the new limit is resident made `limit - used` wrap and the cache's residency/staging checks and the backend's BLAS cap admit everything. Every check takes its room through VegetationPolicy::RoomUnder. - ChooseReflectionTiers and the producer's reflection room read the scaled memory limits too, instead of starving reflections under a raised scale. - CastingAreaPlantsPerGroup was VerticesPerFrame / 16, so doubling the frame limit silently doubled far-card groups to 131,072 plants, a shape the #1578 sweep never measured. It is pinned at 65,536, which makes the shipped build exactly the measured budgetScale 2 + memoryScale 2 configuration. - RunFrames and RunEditorFrames wait on FoliageRenderer::IsRebuilding() only: a component whose m_NeedsRebuild the scene never consumes (no terrain, no layers) no longer stalls a test for 30 s. RunFrames gets the same wait. The atlas test's own copy of the wait is gone. - acceptance-benchmark.py clears every key any cell's env sets from the inherited environment before each launch, so a control cell cannot run under a lever left set in the shell; it refuses OLO_SHADER_CACHE_DIR / OLO_CAPTURE_TEST_DELAY_MS in a cell env and a bracket-lever cell that requires a ShadowPass sub-pass. - ShadowAtlasFoliageCullEvidenceTest pins OLO_NO_SHADOWPASS_BRACKETS: no ShadowPass/Atlas under the lever, ShadowPass itself still timed, Atlas back once it is off. - docs/agent-rules/foliage-regeneration-is-async-once-workers-start.md. …cumented (#1543) 0283d5a re-captured them from Release, but docs/testing.md rebases perf baselines with the Debug test binary and the rest of the file follows it, so a Debug run would have read every staging key as a 10-40x regression. Re- captured with --olo-perf-rebase from build-cached Debug on the quiet dev box (RTX 4090, i7-14700KF, driver 617.42). In Debug the frame-arena change takes vk_particle_emit_staging_64 from 250,500 ns (the old Debug baseline) to 7,200 ns; the GL keys move little (gl_fluid_step_4_proxies 12,800 -> 10,500). - olo_rt_vegetation_diagnostic refuses a farErrorReference outside the f32 range or one that rounds to 0, instead of an undefined conversion or a silently disabled bound; its description and the MemoryScale comments say 128 MiB, the shipped limit. - VsmCardCutoverKeepsTheShadowOfTheMeshBand: a frame without a valid FoliageCasters bracket is no sample, not a 0 ms one that wins the minimum. - RendererAttachedTest::RunFramesInFlight ticks without the foliage wait; RunningScenePublishesAReplacementThroughTheRuntimeTick uses it and asserts the runtime tick really left the rebuild in flight, which the waiting RunFrames had made vacuous. - InterleavedParticleEmitUploadsKeepDistinctComputeInputs restores the staging-reuse fault lever through ScopedStagingReuseFault, so an assertion in the fault arm cannot leave later tests on the in-place reuse path. - shadow-pass-attribution-and-cull-slots.md states the cull-slot cause on every backend, not only for parallel recording. ViewDistance is world metres already (the cull compares it with the eye distance), so a terrain scaled to 0.25 refreshed levels 0-8 instead of 0-10 and left the hand-overs and card facing in levels 9-10 stale. Every shipped scene uses unit scale, so none of them changes. Found next to CodeRabbit's card cut-over finding on PR #1632, which had the same extra factor. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
LayerShadowMeshReach multiplied MeshRegionReach by the terrain's scale, but the hand-over band it comes from is compared in world metres with the distance from the transformed pivot to the eye (lodDist in FoliageInstanceVertexStage.glsl), and the GPU cull already uses it unscaled. At terrain scale 0.25 every layer started casting cards two levels early, where the lit view still draws meshes. ScalingTheTerrainMovesNoVsmLevelChosenByDistance pins both this and the eye refresh: scaling the terrain must move neither a layer's first card level nor the eye's levels. With both factors put back it fails at 0.25 (first card level 3 for 5, eye levels 511 for 2047). CodeRabbit finding on PR #1632. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
GetVsmCardCutoverKey never existed: FoliageRenderer::UpdateVsmCardCutover returns the key, and ShadowRenderPass::SubmitFamilyDynamicInvalidations XORs it into GetShadowRevision(). CodeRabbit finding on PR #1632. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Closes #1590. Closes #1580. Closes #1578. Closes #1543. Refs #1594 (investigated, not reproduced).
Five rendering-performance issues from the #1259 acceptance scene and the #1391 foliage scenes, one commit series per issue. Every number is from the same machine unless stated: RTX 4090, i7-14700KF, 64 GB, driver 617.42, Release, clang-cl.
#1590: ShadowPass attribution, and the atlas route's unculled foliage
ShadowPass now has GPU brackets by view family (
ShadowPass/Csm,/Atlas,/VsmPages,/VsmCull,/VsmSun,/VsmLocal). Inside each family, it has one bracket per caster class (MeshCasters,SkinnedCasters,VoxelCasters,GroomCasters,TerrainCasters,FoliageCull,FoliageCasters,VirtualGeometry). For this,GPUPassTimerPoolnests sub-passes two deep and allows 1024 brackets a frame. On Vulkan the CSM and atlas regions record in parallel, so only their region brackets are published there. The pass also has CPU scopes (ShadowPass::Csm,::Atlas,::VsmPages,::VsmCasters,::CollectGrooms).The brackets showed where the atlas route's 0.1–0.9 s went. The foliage GPU cull has four shadow-view slots, and every atlas face past the fourth drew the whole lawn uncompacted. A region now culls and records its views four at a time, with a barrier between batches.
Acceptance scene, GL Forward, three interleaved fresh-process runs per arm, ShadowPass GPU ms (run min–max, counted runs only):
The same fix live on the Vulkan editor (acceptance scene, Deferred, VSM off), shipped against the fault lever that restores the one-batch cull, interleaved shipped / fault / shipped:
OLO_FAULT_SHADOW_FOLIAGE_CULL_CAPThe VSM head cameras sit 0.5–1.5 ms above the before medians. The ranges overlap at head-closeup and not at head-backlit. The brackets themselves are not the cause:
OLO_NO_SHADOWPASS_BRACKETS=1, A/B'd as an interleaved cell, moves ShadowPass by at most about 0.3 ms at any camera. Per-layer card levels are cached per frame, and a re-run after that cache measured the same. The difference stays inside the before campaign's own spread, and I could not attribute it further. On Vulkan the family brackets cover 94% of ShadowPass at head-closeup (14.7 of 15.6 ms). On GL the remainder is CPU groom work that the pass's GPU span counts. A live GL editor at the acceptance scene (Forward, VSM) shows:
ShadowPass::CollectGroomsCPUThe groom caster collection belongs to the groom deformation cost tracked in #1588.
#1580: foliage casts through cards past each layer's mesh band
This implements the rule decided on the issue. A layer casts its authored mesh into a VSM clip level only up to the level its mesh reach selects. Past
SelectClipLevel(meshReach) + 1it casts cards only, with a zero hand-over band, so the card owns every plant there. For example, Meadow Grass (25 m mesh reach) casts cards from L5 and Woodland Pines (87 m) from L7. The level is folded into the foliage shadow revision, so a change re-renders the cached pages.OLO_FOLIAGE_VSM_CARD_LEVELforces one level for every layer, for A/B testing. The mesh reach is in world metres, like the hand-over band it comes from, so scaling the terrain does not move the cut-over (ScalingTheTerrainMovesNoVsmLevelChosenByDistance).VsmSun/FoliageCastersGPU ms (FoliageCostBaselineTest, GL, interleaved arms on the same frames):Shadow shape:
VsmCardCutoverKeepsTheShadowOfTheMeshBandcompares shadow-factor buffers on three paths at three traversal steps. On the Vulkan editor (traversal scene, Deferred, VSM), screenshots of shipped and meshes-everywhere show the same leaf-shaped ground shadows, while cards-everywhere shows coarser ones. Wind keeps that comparison visual: the live pixel noise floor is as large as the arm differences.
#1578: RT vegetation casting plan, all three options measured
Measured live on the Vulkan editor in the IntegratedRenderer meadow at three poses, with the shadow TLAS's withheld flag and the plan's groups-out count read from
olo_rt_scene_stats:VerticesPerFrame2M,TrianglesPerFrame1M, geometry and acceleration-structure memory 128 MiB each.UpdatesPerFramestays at 1024, and far-card groups keep their 65,536 plants (CastingAreaPlantsPerGroupis no longer derived from the frame limit). So the shipped build is exactly thebudgetScale 2+memoryScale 2configuration the sweep measured.Ten samples per cell, shipped limits vs the old ones (

RenderCommand::BindTransientStoragecopies a dispatch's CPU input into the Vulkan frame arena, which the frame fence recycles, and binds that range. GPU particle emit batches, GPU fluid emit batches and fluid body proxies use it on Vulkan; GL keeps its one reused buffer. The fluid emit's 3 ms cost inside a recording was not the allocation. A 32-entry partial
SetDatainto a mapped 4,096-entry buffer built a whole-buffer draw snapshot, filled by reading about 127 KB back out of write-combined memory, for a compute read that never looks at snapshots.CPU submission per call (min of 20):
A frame of 20 emits and 20 proxy steps now creates zero device allocations, and a test asserts it. The delayed-read tests carry an in-place-reuse fault arm (
OLO_FAULT_VULKAN_STAGING_REUSE) that must see the race. The baselines are re-captured from Release; see Found and fixed.#1594: hitch reproduction (Refs only)
Not reproduced. I ran the live Vulkan editor at the acceptance scene with the CPU-scope ring armed in three arms: quiet, 31 GiB of host memory held resident, and all 28 logical cores spinning. Population-dolly p95 stayed at 121–132 ms in every arm, against the issue's 153–688 ms, and no 0.65–2.1 s frame appeared. Details are in the issue comment.

None. Evidence for #1589 (GroomPass is CPU-bound at the head close-up on Vulkan too, recording for 79–224 ms per frame) is posted on that issue: the groom passes belong to another live worktree.
