Closes #1294 once the cells below are green. The PR body states the scope decision, as the issue asks.

Scope, as decided by the user on 2026-10-18

lavapipe only. No self-hosted RTX runner and no scheduled run on a developer box. Issue item 3 is dropped by that decision, and item 2 becomes "every L7 ray-query suite executes on lavapipe nightly, and a designated run fails when a case did not execute."

What changes

  • vulkan-software.yml runs RayTracingDevice.*, GpuPathTracerDevice.* and ReSTIRPTDevice.* nightly on lavapipe 26.2.0. A new step, Require every L7 ray-query case to execute, fails the job when any case those suites define did not execute. The defined set comes from --gtest_list_tests, so a case a filter dropped is reported did not run instead of disappearing from the XML. The one exemption is the opt-in RayTracingDevice.VegetationDetailedVersusCardExperiment. --olo-require-vulkan could not do this: the fixtures skip after the device gate, and the Vulkan* suites keep the run "exercised" (measured: PARTIAL - 138 of 178, exit 0, with ray query forced off).
  • The ReSTIR PT "timeout" was a shader compile, not slow compute. With the wait unbounded, the first ReSTIR_PT draw on a fresh lavapipe device waits 38-41 s and every later draw under 6 ms: llvmpipe JIT-compiles the fragment shader on the queue thread at its first draw. The fixture's fence budget now comes from the device (DeviceFenceWaitBudgetNs: 10 s hardware, 300 s software, classified by VulkanCapabilities::Evaluate().IsSoftware). No workload was shrunk.
  • scripts/vulkan_ray_query_coverage.py is the one reporter. Windows.yml's Renderer bug batch: Vulkan arena and GPU Scene fixes #1299 step now calls it in report mode (and adds GpuPathTracerDevice to its filter). The old inline heredoc wrote a literal \n into the job summary. Unit-tested in scripts/test_vulkan_ray_query_coverage.py, which runs in both workflows.
  • Dispatch inputs: ray_query_off sets OLO_VULKAN_NO_RAY_TRACING=1 (the gate's negative control). Dispatch runs get their own concurrency group, so two on one branch no longer cancel each other.

Bug fixed on the way (own commit)

VulkanOneShot::Submit destroyed its fence and freed its command buffer after a failed fence wait while the submission could still be executing (VUID-vkDestroyFence-fence-01120, VUID-vkFreeCommandBuffers-pCommandBuffers-00047), and UploadToBuffer then destroyed the staging buffer under the copy. It now drains (waits until retired or device lost) before release, as VulkanContext's flush already does, and still returns false/Submitted. The injected timeout now does a real zero-budget wait, so the existing injection tests exercise the drain.

Verification

Cell Result
lavapipe 26.2.0 local, Release, full nightly filter 289 passed, 0 failed, 687 s; gate exit 0 (34 of 35 L7 cases executed, the one skip is the opt-in)
RTX 4090 local, Release, same filter 297 passed, 0 failed, 46 s
RTX 4090 local, Debug + validation, VulkanResourceFactory.*:VulkanOneShot*:ReSTIRPTDevice.* 38 passed; drain path ran for both injected timeouts; zero-validation-error assertions held
ReSTIR PT oracle negative control on lavapipe (stale 2.0 lane restored) near-specular metal 0.0095 vs 0.650 and glossy Cornell 0.037 vs 0.113 go red; the other 7 stay green
Gate negative control B, local: OLO_VULKAN_NO_RAY_TRACING=1 with Vulkan* in the run gate exit 1, "34 required case(s) did not execute"
CI positive: this PR's vulkan-software.yml run pending
CI negative control A: dispatch dropping ReSTIRPTDevice.EveryMapping… pending (run 39118562993), expected red at the gate
CI negative control B: dispatch with ray_query_off pending (run 39118564724), expected red at the gate
Scheduled (cron) trigger not run before merge: cron fires only on master; the dispatch and PR cells run the same job

OpenGL and the Forward/Forward+/Deferred paths are not reached: these suites drive synthetic ray-query work on a Vulkan device.

…ease (#1294)

On VK_TIMEOUT, VulkanOneShot::Submit destroyed the fence and freed the
command buffer while the submission could still be executing
(VUID-vkDestroyFence-fence-01120, VUID-vkFreeCommandBuffers-pCommandBuffers-00047),
and UploadToBuffer then destroyed the staging buffer under a copy that
might still be reading it. It now waits without a timeout, as
VulkanContext's flush already does, until the work retires or the device
is lost, and still reports false/Submitted. An error from that second
wait leaks the fence and command buffer instead of releasing them in
flight.

The injected timeout now waits for real with a zero budget, so the
existing fence-wait injection tests run the drain against work that may
still be pending.

…ice (#1294)

8 of 9 ReSTIRPTDevice cases failed on lavapipe 26.2.0 at the fixture's
own 10 s vkWaitForFences on their first draw. Timed with the wait
unbounded, that draw waits 38-41 s and every later draw on the same
pipeline under 6 ms: llvmpipe JIT-compiles the fragment shader on the
queue thread at its first draw. The work is not slow, so the workload
stays as it is.

DeviceFenceWaitBudgetNs (VulkanTestSupport.h) gives hardware 10 s and a
software ICD 300 s, classified by VulkanCapabilities::Evaluate's
IsSoftware, not an environment variable. All 9 cases pass on lavapipe
and on an RTX 4090. With the stale 2.0 flags lane from #1288 restored,
the near-specular metal (0.0095 vs 0.650) and glossy Cornell (0.037 vs
0.113) arms still go red on lavapipe.

…l if one did not run (#1294)

vulkan-software.yml's filter now includes RayTracingDevice.*,
GpuPathTracerDevice.* and ReSTIRPTDevice.*. A new step requires, from
the gtest XML, that every case those suites define executed: the
defined set comes from --gtest_list_tests, so a case a filter dropped
counts as not run. The one exemption is the opt-in
VegetationDetailedVersusCardExperiment. --olo-require-vulkan alone
cannot do this, because the fixtures skip after the device gate and the
Vulkan* suites keep the run "exercised".

The gate is scripts/vulkan_ray_query_coverage.py, extracted from
Windows.yml's inline #1299 reporter, which now calls it in report mode
and adds GpuPathTracerDevice to its filter. The old heredoc wrote a
literal "\n" into the job summary instead of a line break.

A new ray_query_off dispatch input sets OLO_VULKAN_NO_RAY_TRACING, the
negative control the gate must turn red.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add device-specific fence-wait budgets for ReSTIR PT tests and introduce per-case ray-query coverage reporting. The Windows workflow reports coverage for three L7 suites. The software Vulkan workflow runs those suites and gates on expected-case execution.

Changes: Lavapipe ray-query coverage

VulkanOneShot::Submit waits again after a failed fence wait before releasing resources. ReSTIRPTDeviceTest uses a physical-device-derived wait budget: 300 seconds for software devices and 10 seconds otherwise. The documentation records the observed lavapipe timing and test results.
Per-case XML coverage evaluator
scripts/vulkan_ray_query_coverage.py, scripts/test_vulkan_ray_query_coverage.py, docs/agent-rules/testing-architecture.md
The script reports gtest XML results by suite and case. Required mode fails when required cases are missing or skipped, except for named allowed skips. Unit tests cover parsing, reporting, and gate outcomes.
Workflow integration and suite documentation

The Windows workflow reports coverage for the three L7 suites. The software Vulkan workflow runs the suites and gates expected-case execution, allowing the vegetation experiment to skip. It also adds a ray-query-off diagnostic input and includes the expected-case list in the results artifact.

A failed expected-case listing could let the nightly ray-query job pass without checking every required test. The Vulkan upload drain-error path also needs safe staging-buffer cleanup. Resolve these issues before merging.

Explanation

The workflow gate, coverage script, unit tests, Windows report integration, negative controls, concurrency change, fence budget, one-shot drain, and documentation all support reliable execution or verification of the #1294 coverage objective. The reviewed changes show no demonstrated unrelated change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes implement a lavapipe nightly run and a per-case missing-execution gate for #1294. The September amendment to #1294 still requires a usable hardware RT runner or an explicitly authorized scheduled developer-device run. It also requires recording the last executed commit, backend/driver/extensions, execution counts, and required-case coverage age. The workflow provides no hardware RT or developer-device run, and the reporter does not establish a coverage-age record or include extension fields in its selected capability lines.

Resolution

Provide the required hardware RT runner or an explicitly authorized scheduled developer-device run. Make that designated run fail when a required case does not execute. Record the required commit, backend/driver/extensions, executed/passed/failed/skipped counts, and coverage age. Alternatively, update #1294's active requirements before treating the lavapipe-only scope as complete.

… keeps the staging buffer (#1294)

Review finding on #1633: when the unbounded drain wait itself errors,
Submit leaked the fence and command buffer but UploadToBuffer still
destroyed the staging buffer the copy may be reading. Submit now waits
for the queue to go idle, which proves the submission retired for every
caller. Only when that fails too does it report the new
Outcome::DrainFailed, and UploadToBuffer then leaks its staging buffer
alongside the fence and command buffer.

…e set (#1294)

Review findings on #1633: --require without --expected-list now errors,
since a dropped case would be absent from both sides; and the workflow
fails the step if --gtest_list_tests exits nonzero, before a partial
list can reach the gate. The step reads BUILD_TYPE from the environment
instead of expanding the template into the script.
