feat(groom): lamps the VSM serves cast the coat's shadow (#1592) - #1637
Conversation
…er scale Under a render scale the scene depth target keeps its display size and this frame's depth fills only its [0, render) corner. The marker sized its grid by the texture, so it unprojected the corner's texels as if they spanned the whole screen and requested pages no receiver samples. A lamp's VSM shadow came out cut along page edges at a 0.67 scale while the atlas's was whole (overlap 0.47). RenderGraph::SetRenderScale already hands every pass its render viewport; the mark pass now clamps to it. Found by GroomSceneShadowVisualEvidenceTest's Forward_Scale67 lamp cell (#1592): overlap with the atlas reference 0.474 before, 0.985 after. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The VSM's local-light layer pool was drawn only by the GPU-driven mesh batches and the terrain/voxel/foliage family route, so with LocalLights on (the default) a point or spot light cast no groom shadow at all; only the sun's clip levels and the shadow atlas took grooms. The pass counted the gap and warned. Grooms now take the VSM's local external-caster seam: - VSM_GroomDepth gains a local-layer domain (Modes.z = 1): the layer's raster matrix, the GPU-chosen raster mip and its sub-rect of the viewport, the width floor at a texel of that mip, and the local raster write -- the way VSM_DepthLocal draws a mesh there. - ShadowRenderPass::RenderGroomVirtualShadowLocalLayers draws each coat into every layer its box reaches (VirtualShadowMap::BoundsReachLocalLayer, the C++ twin of VSM_CullLocalCasters' reach test), casting the share of its strands its receivers' mip allows (LocalLayerReceiverResolution). - The moving-coat invalidation needed nothing new: AddDynamicInvalidation already sweeps every local layer; a test now pins it for the layers. - VirtualShadowLocalLightsWithoutGrooms, its warning and inspector line go; VirtualShadowLocalLayerDraws reports the new draws (stats, log, MCP, inspector), and a VSM groom program that fails to compile now warns once. Evidence: GroomSceneShadowVisualEvidenceTest's lamp cases A/B a point and a spot light through the VSM's layers against the atlas route on Forward, Forward+ and Deferred, from a second angle, under MSAA 4x and at a 0.67 render scale (overlap 0.97-0.99), with OLO_FAULT_SKIP_GROOM_VSM_LOCAL_LAYERS as the negative control (0 px), and a moving coat's stale layer pages (0 px vs 202 684 with the invalidation off). VirtualShadowMapLocalTest pins the reach test, the share's resolution and the shader's local domain. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… its own fur Under the VSM a casting strand reads the lamp's layers at its coat's light-exit point, and the layers now hold the coat (#1592). The Acceptance scene's key light sits inside the simulated hair's padded box, where that point can lie past the lamp. The case pins both routes: with nothing but its own fur to shadow it, casting leaves the coat as lit as receiving alone (0 of 24 760 coat pixels moved, atlas and layers). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ollow-ups (#1592) Self-review of the local-layer route: - The CPU cuts a coat's share for the texel its receivers read, but the shader floored the width at the layer's raster mip, which can be finer: the share then drew strands too thin for the coverage it was cut for. The floor is now the coarser of the two texels. - The share's mip used the raw LocalDetailBias; the marker and sampler read the clamped Params5.x. VirtualShadowMap::GetLocalDetailBias returns that. - Reach and resolution were computed up to three times per (coat, layer) and every run decision twice. They are now computed once per pair, and RenderGroomCasters returns the segments it cast, which the clip-level route uses too. - One vsmLocalRasterSubRect helper replaces four copies of the sub-rect map (meshes, skinned, families, grooms), with a counted guard. - The stats carry VirtualShadowLocalLights beside the layer draws (inspector, MCP), so a zero can be read. - Stale coverage docs corrected; the lamp-layer rules move to groom-casters-in-vsm-local-layers.md, keeping the groom shadow guide under its size. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- A layer counts as drawn only when a coat cast into it: a reached box with no geometry that frame left VirtualShadowLocalLayerDraws non-zero. - LocalDetailBias is checked with std::isfinite before it reaches the marker, the sampler and the CPU twin; std::max passed a NaN through. - olo_groom_budget_stats declares virtualShadowLocalLayerDraws and virtualShadowLocalLights in its output schema, and the INFO line logs the lamp count and re-logs when it changes. - The share test checks numbers worked from the GLSL heuristic, with a counted guard on that formula, instead of re-calling the C++ twin. - The shader comment and the segment stat say what they do: the floor is the coarser texel; the segments are the submitted ones. 🟡 Minor · Update the caster tooltip to name VSM local layers. · SceneHierarchyPanel.cpp:10225-10227

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winUpdate the caster tooltip to name VSM local layers.
When VSM local lights are enabled, the new readout reports local-layer draws, but this tooltip names only the local-light atlas. State that point and spot groom shadows use VSM local layers when enabled and the atlas otherwise. This lets users interpret a zero atlas draw count correctly.

…oat (#1592) CodeRabbit (PR #1637) pointed out that the "lamp inside the coat's box" case put its lamp above the box: the strands droop 0.825 m by their tips, so the box tops out ~1.37 m above the centre, not 2.1 m. With the lamp moved inside (asserted from the asset's bounds), the layers darkened 821 of 24 886 coat pixels by the coat's own fur, where the atlas moved none: the light-exit point lay past the lamp, and the lookup read the far side's face through the fur. oloGroomLocalExitPoint stops the VSM lamp lookup 0.11 m short of the lamp, past the layers' near plane: 0 px. The case now holds the 1%-of-coat bar the other self-shadow cases use; the pre-fix shader fails it (821 px, 3.3%). Also from that review: the Cast shadows tooltip names the VSM local-light layers for point and spot lights. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

CodeRabbit (PR #1637): the lamp guard pulled every exit within 0.11 m of the lamp back by the guard, including one that left the coat's box before the lamp, which put the lookup inside the coat again under its own fur. An exit before the lamp now stays where it is; only one at or past the lamp stops 0.11 m short. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Closes #1592.
What changed
With virtual shadow maps on, a point or spot light served by the VSM's local-light layers (LocalLights, on by default) cast no groom shadow. Only the sun's clip levels and the shadow atlas took grooms. The layer pool was drawn by the GPU-driven mesh batches and the terrain/voxel/foliage family route, and a groom entered neither. The pass counted the gap (
VirtualShadowLocalLightsWithoutGrooms) and warned once.Grooms now draw into the layers through the VSM's local external-caster seam, the same seam the families use:
VSM_GroomDepthgains a local-layer domain (Modes.z = 1, layer inModes.x). It uses the layer's raster matrix, the GPU-chosen raster mip (b_LocalRasterMip) and that mip's corner of the viewport, and writes through the local raster write. A layer with no dirty page collapses every vertex.ShadowRenderPass::RenderGroomVirtualShadowLocalLayersissues one draw per layer a coat's box reaches.VirtualShadowMap::BoundsReachLocalLayeris the C++ twin ofVSM_CullLocalCasters.comp's reach test: range sphere plus frustum outcodes, and an unused layer reaches nothing.DecideGroomCasterRun) is cut for the mip the marker selects at the coat (LocalLayerReceiverResolution, with the GPU's clamped detail bias). The shader floors the width at the coarser of that texel and the raster mip's. A share is a promise about world coverage, so this keeps the shadow's density independent of which mip happens to rasterise.vsmLocalRasterSubRectreplaces four copies of the mip-corner map (meshes, skinned meshes, families, grooms).oloGroomLocalExitPointstops it 0.11 m short of the lamp, past the layers' near plane.AddDynamicInvalidationalready sweeps every local layer. A test now pins it for a lamp.VirtualShadowLocalLayerDrawsandVirtualShadowLocalLightsreport the draws and the lamps served (stats, the INFO log line, the inspector,olo_groom_budget_stats). A VSM groom program that fails to compile now warns once, because then no coat casts a VSM shadow at all.Cost, qualitatively (no timing was asked for): each lamp face a coat's box reaches now gets one CPU draw of that coat's share, every frame. The GPU drops it at the vertex stage when the face has no dirty page, and at the fragment stage on cached pages. Like the family route's local draws, there is no per-caster dirty-footprint cull, so a static coat in a face with unrelated dirty pages still pays its vertex work. A deforming coat dirties its own footprint every frame anyway.

Review guide
Where I'd look hardest
OloEditor/assets/shaders/include/VSM_GroomDepthVertex.glsl, the local domain: the width floormin(rasterTexels, Width.z)and the collapse on an invalid raster mip. A wrong floor reads as a lighter or heavier shadow, not as an error.ShadowRenderPass::RenderGroomVirtualShadowLocalLayers: the per-layer texel scratch indexed by&caster - firstCaster, and the reach test fed render-relative boxes.VirtualShadowMapMarkPass.cpp: the clamp tom_RenderViewportWidth/Height. It assumes the rendered region is the[0, render)corner on both backends, which is whatRenderGraph::SetRenderScaleand the readback (Renderer measurement limitations with no owner: sub-scale readback, resize VUID rerun, split AOVs, staging baselines #1526) assume too. What I verified, and how. The atlas route is the reference in every lamp cell, and each cell's negative control (
OLO_FAULT_SKIP_GROOM_VSM_LOCAL_LAYERS, from a restarted VSM) shows 0 px of coat shadow, so the cells can see the gap. The moving-coat cell's negative control (the groom invalidation off) leaves 202 684 stale px. The render-scale cell failed before the marker fix and passes after.Least confident about. The VSM layers' coat shadow is 12-15% lighter than the atlas's for the point light (ratio 0.85-0.88; the spot is 1.00-1.08). The overlap is 0.97+, so the shadow is in place. I read the difference as the two techniques sampling different texels (the atlas tile is a fixed size, the layer is mipped per receiver) rather than a share error, but I didn't isolate it further.
