Purpose — security issue #284 (independent from docs #282 and upstream #283)

Repin the 2026-10-20 emSign/eMudhra CA compromise remediation in the common image. Existing exact-head Build AMD64 #39546063063 fails the mandatory Trivy gate on GHSA-6q48-6c7w-9gw2 | certifi 2026.6.17 -> 2026.10.19, for both base and final. Current pinned uv 0.13.1 and the proposed bot refresh uv 0.13.3 (#283) also carry the independent GHSA-hq85-5cpj-mr62 CA-bundle issue.

Changes

  • Keep Python 3.14.8 (default) and 3.15.0 (project opt-in). Repin both AMD64/ARM64 python-build-standalone exact install-only artifacts to 20261020, whose official release notes state pip 26.2.2 is included, using four actual GitHub release asset SHA-256 digests and existing attestations policy.
  • Repin locked uv to 0.13.4, including two real GitHub release asset digests and release asset API IDs, preserving Aqua and locked-provenance policy.
  • Keep versions.env/mise.toml/Dockerfile/inventory/standalone inspection metadata coherent; update Python full-distribution artifact manifests to the actual 20261020 full asset SHA-256 digests and sizes published by upstream.
  • Build-time verify both independent Python runtimes contain pip >= 26.2.2 and the selected uv is exactly 0.13.4. Never change project Python selection, install-at-start, noexec scratch, mounts or capabilities.

Completed evidence and final acceptance gates — do not merge before latest CI/review

  • Exact archive-derived legal review: temporary trusted GitHub Actions regeneration #39550849891 downloaded/verified all four full AMD64/ARM64 release archives and regenerated full legal metadata for Python 3.14.8 and 3.15.0. Committed all six changed JSON outputs with Git blob SHA checks proving byte-for-byte equality against the generated artifact, and removed only the two OpenSSL 1.1 notices no longer referenced. Repeated generation #39551260097 succeeded with zero git-status legal diffs. The one-time CI workflow was removed before the final PR HEAD. Preserved MIT/Apache notices for uv were compared verbatim across upstream 0.13.1 and 0.13.4 and remained identical. The synchronizer now accepts an approved subset of supplemental notices when upstream archives already bundle them, still rejecting unknown sources.
  • Inspected original #39546063063 full base/final Trivy and SPDX artifact: the CRITICAL pkg:pypi/certifi@2026.6.17 appears in both reports as Target: Python (scanner SBOM discovery; no per-file location), and both images contain pip 26.2.1. Patched Python standalone 20261020 and strict pip floor tests target this shared base cause. Confirm the original certifi finding disappears in final CI below.
  • CI on final HEAD: locked/provenance validators, legal/inventory/notice checks, 53-command smokes, project selection, hardened Codex+Antigravity roles, SPDX and Trivy no-fixable-CRITICAL for base+final. No suppression/ignores and no reduced gate.
  • Final HEAD review/CodeRabbit and any actionable comments; focused maintenance: recurring third-party license and distribution review #53 security-driven redistribution sign-off before any main merge. Obsolete upstream PR chore: review upstream updates #283 was closed without merge; its unrelated updates can be refreshed separately.

Official advisories:

No TrueNAS deployment, no stable release and no merge until these gates are green.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates

    • Updated bundled Python runtime artifacts for supported platforms.
    • Updated the bundled uv tool to version 0.13.4.
    • Updated OpenSSL licensing metadata to reflect OpenSSL 3.
  • Validation

    • Builds now verify the required pip version and isolated execution.
    • License checks now accept reviewed supplemental-license manifests when entries are omitted, while still rejecting unknown or altered sources.

Walkthrough

The changes update uv to 0.13.4, refresh the Python 3.14 and 3.15 standalone artifacts and license metadata, and adjust supplemental-license validation and pip checks.

Changes

uv Version Update

Layer / File(s) Summary

versions.env, mise.toml, images/base/Dockerfile, third_party/inventory.json, third_party/standalone-artifact-inspection.json, third_party/standalone-artifact-inspection.md
The uv version changes to 0.13.4 in build and tool configuration, inventory records, and amd64 and arm64 artifact details.

Standalone Python Runtime Refresh

Layer / File(s) Summary
Allow reviewed supplemental-license omissions
scripts/compact-python-runtime-notices.py, scripts/sync-python-runtime-notices.py, scripts/test_sync_python_runtime_notices.py
The checks accept supplemental-license entries that are a subset of the reviewed mapping. Tests cover empty lists and unrecognized sources.
Refresh standalone releases and license metadata
third_party/components/python-build-standalone*/manifest.json, third_party/components/python-build-standalone*/{amd64,arm64}/license-metadata.json, third_party/components/python-build-standalone*/licenses/LICENSE.openssl-1.1.txt
The Python 3.14 and 3.15 manifests use the 20261020 releases and have empty supplemental-license lists. The architecture metadata references OpenSSL 3, and the OpenSSL 1.1 license files are removed.
Validate pip in Python runtime images
images/base/Dockerfile
The image build requires pip 26.2.2 or later for Python 3.14 and 3.15, then checks that pip runs in isolated mode.

Security response exact-head review requested — 2026-10-21

Final candidate HEAD for independent security remediation: 811269a9c2b55ec11f3052a5d97adc03c5c7c7e3 on PR #286, now ready for review.

Evidence: old base/final SPDX show pip 26.2.1 and certifi 2026.6.17, and Trivy's exact GHSA; new Python standalone 20261020 on both runtime lines and both architectures has GitHub-published checksums and attestations, includes upstream pip 26.2.2. uv 0.13.4 assets are SHA-locked with GitHub attestations. Build-time checks enforce pip floor in both Pythons and exact uv version. No silent downloads at runtime, no scanner bypass.

Full-archive legal regeneration ran in GitHub Actions 39550849891; all six manifest/metadata JSON files match the generated artifact by exact Git blob SHA, not an inferred license text. Regeneration repeated successfully on the committed records at 39551260097 with zero uncommitted legal diffs. Upstream now includes formerly-supplemented zlib-ng/zstd texts; old OpenSSL 1.1 notices are absent from the actual full distributions and removed from the preserved evidence. Added fail-closed tests forbidding unknown supplemental sources. Temporary one-time audit workflow was removed; it is absent from the target diff.

The earlier post-syntax-fix image CI 39550361661 passed, including mandatory Trivy gates, before final legal file commits. The exact current final-head 39551354341 is running, not yet considered successful. This branch was created independently of unrelated docs PR #282 and now-closed obsolete upstream PR #283.

Please inspect the complete security+notice diff for architectural/legal/security risks and only recommend merge once the final exact-head CI and review are both complete. No stable/TrueNAS action.

Final CodeRabbit actionable correction — 2026-10-21

CodeRabbit completed its initial full review of security PR #286 and raised one valid minor: the supplemental-license subset validator silently omitted non-object list entries (for example [false]), accidentally accepting a malformed manifest. Fixed at exact commit 56628a552831bffe7f65f3e5eb901f88721bb35b: explicitly reject any non-dict record before constructing the approved-source subset; maintain correct acceptance of empty supplemental lists (upstream full archives already ship both formerly missing texts). Added negative regression with [False]; responded inline and closed the review thread. No changes to binary pins, legal metadata, Docker behavior or security-gate strictness.

Final-head Build AMD64 #39552201494 has started. One earlier exact security-runtime Build AMD64 #39550361661 already passed and its SPDX/Trivy archive confirms both images use certifi 2026.10.19 and pip 26.2.2 and uv is 0.13.4, with zero fixable CRITICAL. The final HEAD adds only validated legal file commits, temporary-workflow deletion, and this code-fail-closed fix. Do not presume final-head CI green until completion.
