@greptileai Please review pushed head 1d15e64. This two-file acceptance correction follows current Core support: preserve a supported JavaScript true condition through import/export, then reject XPath with bpmn.import.condition-language-unsupported and Flow element ID. Real-server roundtrip and cleanup passed; baseline294unit/28host/49browser checks passed. Please also inspect cleanup and XML assertions. |
[Medium impact] No outstanding blocking findings remain. The current fixture addresses the previously reported failure, and no merge-blocking issues were identified. SummaryCorrects workflow action requests and response types, adds real-server checks, and updates the BPMN fixture and documentation.
The previously reported settings-check issue is addressed. No new actionable issues were found in the changes since the previous review. Reviews (6) · Last reviewed commit: "Pin parent to child v2 after publishing ..." · Reviewed by Greptile |

@greptileai Please review pushed head 0586e41. Final scope fixes workflow publish/retract/update-references JSON action requests, accurate retract/revert response types and editor Unpublish response consumption. Real action acceptance and paired-container checks cover the contracts; the prior current-Core BPMN condition correction remains. Both DTO-less revert/cancel retain their valid bodyless requests. Please review cleanup, CI wiring and the bare-response editor regression. The previous score at 1d15 is historical. |

@greptileai Please review pushed head 3c2ceef. The only new change lists the exact workflows/definitions/versions:revert permission in the real-server check instructions. I verified the advisory fix and live thread is resolved. Product code/tests/CI scripts are byte-identical to 0586, which passed294unit/28host/50browser and actual Core UI/action/BPMN branch checks. Please confirm the final exact head. |

APPROVE + HIGH @ 3c2ceef Transparent author self-review under the task owner's standing self-review/self-merge authority; this is not an independent approval. Reviewed the typed action request/response contracts against actual Core endpoints, editor Unpublish state handling, regression coverage, cleanup and existing CI integration. Only Publish, Retract and Update references request DTOs receive empty JSON objects; valid bodyless endpoints and generic/multipart HTTP behavior are preserved. Retract and revert response types match actual Core responses. The editor consumes the bare retract model. The real-server checks cover action persistence and BPMN supported-condition preservation/unsupported-language refusal; paired-container CI runs them after readiness. The final permission documentation matches Core. Validation: 294 unit, 28 hosting and 50 browser cases passed. The rebuilt actual Core UI passed definition-row and editor Publish/Unpublish, save/reload, republish/run/Finished/journal/execution-record checks, with zero incidents, browser exceptions or HTTP 5xx. Actual BPMN true/false routing took only its expected branch. Paired source-host verification passed; temporary definitions/instances were removed and owned hosts stopped. Confidence Score: 5/5 No actionable issues were identified in head The request/response contract changes are consistent with the stated Core behavior, the editor now consumes the bare retract model, and the browser regression exercises the published-to-draft UI transition. The real-server checks assert the action results and clean up temporary definitions; the paired-container workflow runs both checks against its reference server before the browser smoke test. The BPMN fixture uses a valid exclusive-gateway flow and checks preservation of supported conditions and structured refusal for an unsupported language. The validation results in the PR description were not rerun during this review. |

Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH @ b59535b
Code Review, Round 1/6
The contract fixes are correct. Two small but real issues remain in the docs and in the real-server check, both raised by CodeRabbit outside the diff.
Contract fixes (verified against Core at this head)
Publish,RetractandUpdateReferencesareElsaEndpoint<Request, ...>, so a bodyless POST gets 415. Sending{}is the right fix.Version/Revert.csisElsaEndpointWithoutRequest, so leaving revert bodyless is correct too.Retractreturns a bareLinkedWorkflowDefinitionModel. TypingretractasWorkflowDefinitionand readingresult.isPublishedin the editor fixes the false Unpublish error (the old code readresult.workflowDefinitionand threw after a successful retract).RevertVersionreturnsWorkflowDefinitionSummary.FromDefinition(...), so the newWorkflowDefinitionSummarytype forrevertmatches.Publishstill returns the wrapperResponse(WorkflowDefinition, AlreadyPublished, ...), and the client type is unchanged. Good.- TypeScript passes, so no caller depended on the old retract or revert shapes.
The new browser regression for editor Unpublish and the extended real-server check are good additions. Wiring the settings and BPMN scripts into the paired-container run means they now actually run in CI.
Blocking
- Wrong permission list in
studio/react/docs/activity-settings.md(around lines 58-60).Post/Endpoint.csrequiresworkflows/definitions:write(CoreVerbs.Write), notcreate.UpdateReferencesrequiresworkflows/definitions:publish, and noupdate-referencespermission exists. Someone who sets up a least-privilege user from this text will fail on the first save. Please list write, publish, view, retract and delete, plusworkflows/definitions/versions:revert. - The update-references check can't fail (
test-settings-roundtrip.mjs).updateReferencesruns while version 2 is still the latest, so no consumer is stale andaffectedWorkflowsis empty.Array.isArraypasses on an empty array, so this only proves the 415 is gone, not that the action works. Please call it afterrevert(which creates version 3), so the parent's reference to version 2 is stale, and assert thataffectedWorkflowscontains the parent. If the updater needsautoUpdateConsumingWorkflowson the child for that, set it in the fixture.

Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH @ adae2be
Code Review, Round 2/6
Delta reviewed: b59535bc..adae2be9 (2 files: studio/react/docs/activity-settings.md, studio/react/scripts/test-settings-roundtrip.mjs). Nothing else changed.
R1 item 1 (permissions in docs): resolved
Checked against the Core endpoints at this head:
- Save:
Post/Endpoint.csrequiresworkflows/definitions+CoreVerbs.Write. Correct. - Publish and UpdateReferences: both
RequirePermission(WorkflowPermissions.Definitions, "publish")(Publish/Endpoint.cs,UpdateReferences/Endpoint.cs:21). There is noupdate-referencesverb, so listingpublishcovers it. Correct. - Retract
"retract", GetByDefinitionId/ListView, DeleteDelete, RevertWorkflowPermissions.DefinitionVersions+"revert". All match.
R1 item 2 (updateReferences check): not resolved, the new assertion cannot pass on a real server
The order is right now and the assertion can fail, but it will fail every time against Core:
revert(first.definitionId, 1)goes throughWorkflowDefinitionPublisher.RevertVersionAsync, which saves version 3 as an unpublished draft (GetDraftAsyncon the unpublished v1, thenSaveAsync; nothing publishes it).UpdateReferencesloadsVersionOptions.Latest, which is that draft, and passes it toWorkflowReferenceUpdater.- In
UpdateWorkflowAsync, willTargetBePublished = initialPublicationState.GetValueOrDefault(target.DefinitionId, target.IsPublished). The child is not a consumer, so this istarget.IsPublished == false, and the method returnsnullfor the parent. affectedWorkflowsis[], soincludes(parent.name)throws.
CI confirms it. frontend-and-host fails at "Verify the paired reference server and Preview containers": AssertionError: assert(updated.affectedWorkflows.includes(parent.name)) at test-settings-roundtrip.mjs:54. The local settings-roundtrip.test.ts (2 passed) never talks to a live server, so it cannot catch this.
Publishing v3 right before updateReferences (as CodeRabbit suggests) does not fix it either. PublishAsync sends WorkflowDefinitionPublished, and the UpdateConsumingWorkflows handler runs the same updater straight away (that is where Publish's consumingWorkflowCount comes from). So the parent is already moved to v3 and the explicit call returns [] again.
Suggested fix: get to a published child version first, then create a consumer pinned to an older version, then call update-references. For example: revert to v1, publish the child (v3 published), save the parent with workflowDefinitionVersionId: second.id (v2) as it does now, run the parent publish and retract checks, then updateReferences(first.definitionId) and assert affectedWorkflows.includes(parent.name). Better still, also reload the parent and assert the child activity now points at the published v3 id. Run pnpm test:settings-server against a real dev server before you push.
Bot threads
- CodeRabbit (
test-settings-roundtrip.mjs:54): the diagnosis is right, but the suggested fix is not enough (see above). Replied in the thread. - Greptile P1 (
test-settings-roundtrip.mjs): the same finding, and valid. Replied in the thread. - The author notes on the two R1 items: item 1 is confirmed and item 2 is disputed. Replied in each thread.
CI on adae2be9
frontend-and-host: failure (the assertion above). ubuntu-latest was still running when this review was written. Everything else is green (CodeQL neutral).

@elsa-workflows-bot review R3 at 470285d. Restructured the settings check so the child is reverted and published (v3) before the parent is saved pinned to v2; |

Elsa 3 Code Review: APPROVE + HIGH @ 470285d
Code Review, Round 3/6
Delta reviewed: adae2be9..470285dd. One commit, one file: studio/react/scripts/test-settings-roundtrip.mjs. Nothing else changed.
R2 blocker (updateReferences check): resolved
- The child is reverted to v1 and then published, so v3 is published (asserted:
isPublished, version === 3, and latest id). This happens before any consumer exists, so the publish handler (UpdateConsumingWorkflows) has nothing to update. - The parent is then saved pinned to v2 (
workflowDefinitionVersionId: second.id,version === 2, still asserted after the reload). The v2 descriptor is still found becauseWorkflowDefinitionActivityProviderlistsVersionOptions.All. - After the parent publish/retract checks,
updateReferences(first.definitionId)now has a real stale reference to fix. The updater sees a published target (v3) and a consumer pinned to v2, so it updates the parent.affectedWorkflows.includes(parent.name)can pass and can fail. - The reload asserts the child activity now points at
publishedChild.workflowDefinition.idwithversion === 3. That checks the persisted result, not just the response list. - Cleanup is unchanged. The child is registered before the revert, so a failure in revert or publish still deletes it.
R1 item 1 (documented permissions) was already confirmed in R2 and is untouched.
Non-blocking note: offline vitest
settings-roundtrip.test.ts does not test the flow. It runs the real script against one canned response to prove that the original failure is kept when cleanup succeeds or also fails (it stops at 1 !== 2). The flow itself is covered by the paired-container step against the real reference server. Copying the sequence into a mock would only restate the fixture and would not catch a Core regression, so it does not need to change.

All checks are green. frontend-and-host passes, including the paired-container step (PASS: actual Core API round-trips ... dedicated publish, retract, revert and update-references actions ...).
— Code Review (Elsa 3), via Elsa Review
Workflow definition row Publish and Unpublish, editor Unpublish, and Update references fail against actual Core: three request-DTO endpoints reject bodyless POSTs with HTTP 415, and editor Unpublish expects a wrapper although Core returns the bare definition. Send empty JSON objects for those three typed actions, consume the real retract response, and correct the preview client response types for retract and version revert. Generic HTTP, multipart uploads, cancellation and the bodyless revert request retain their contracts.
Extend the existing real-server settings check to verify dedicated publish/retract/reference-update/revert behavior and response models, and add an editor unpublish browser regression. Run settings and BPMN round-trip checks in existing paired-container CI. The BPMN check now uses a valid exclusive gateway: supported JavaScript conditions survive import/export, while XPath is refused with the current code and flow ID. This fixture passes both the initial Core baseline and current main, which correctly rejects conditions attached directly to start events. Update the action permissions and BPMN documentation accordingly.
