test(studio): React studio core-flow Playwright coverage - #9002
Conversation
Add readable Playwright journeys for sign-in, the workflow list, designer create/edit/save/publish/run, the instance journal and settings. Extend the paired-container check so the same path runs against the real Compose backend. Co-authored-by: Sipke Schoorstra <sipkeschoorstra@outlook.com>

[Medium impact] No outstanding findings block merging these test changes. SummaryAdds browser coverage for rejected sign-in and the main Studio journey, plus a matching journey against the paired containers.

Elsa 3 Code Review: REQUEST_CHANGES + HIGH @ 1a3a304
Code Review, Round 1/6
Good shape overall: straight-line journeys, role and label selectors, no fixed sleeps, stub credentials only (the admin/password pair is the Compose reference server's Development account the script already used), and the in-memory backend is easy to follow. Four things need fixing before this coverage can be trusted.
1. The run check can pass on a failed run (both files).
getByText("Finished", { exact: true }).first() matches the static Finished field label in instance-details.tsx (the finishedAt row), which renders whatever the outcome. The 30 second timeout in test-container-pair.mjs therefore never waits for anything. Scoping to the status badge is not enough either: a faulted Elsa workflow has status: Finished and subStatus: Faulted. Suggested fix:
- In
test-container-pair.mjs, read the instance id from the URL and pollGET {api}/workflow-instances/{id}untilsubStatus === "Finished"(fail onFaulted), then do the UI checks. - In both files, require the journal step to show
Completed, not only aWriteLinerow, and assertFaultedis absent.
2. Cleanup in finally can hide the real failure (test-container-pair.mjs).
Only the DELETE has a .catch. If the login fetch rejects or login.json() throws, the cleanup error replaces the Playwright assertion error. login.ok and the DELETE status are also unchecked, so a failed cleanup sends Bearer undefined and leaks the definition silently. Wrap the whole cleanup in one try/catch, check both responses, and console.warn on failure. (Same as the CodeRabbit thread.)
3. The spec claims "edit, save" but never checks what was saved (core-flows.spec.ts).
The in-memory backend already holds the saved model, but nothing asserts it. After the rename, assert the saved definition has name: "Order notice v1"; after adding the step, assert root.activities contains a WriteLine. A small const saves = [] captured in the POST handler keeps this readable.
4. Remove the racy conditional save after adding the step (core-flows.spec.ts).
if (await unsaved.isVisible()) await unsaved.click(); races the editor's 2 second autosave (AUTOSAVE_DELAY_MS, on by default). Depending on timing it clicks, misses, or hits a button that is being disabled. Pick one deterministic path: either rely on autosave and wait for Saved (as the container script does, with a longer timeout), or turn autosave off in the fixture and click explicitly. The unconditional click after the rename has the same race under a slow runner. Item 3's payload assertion makes either path safe to verify.
Minor, optional: palette.locator("input") and the locator("..") label climb are the only structural selectors; getByRole("combobox"|"searchbox") or getByLabel would be sturdier if the markup allows.
CI: the paired-container job (frontend-and-host) was still queued on this head when this review was posted, so the new Compose path has not run in CI yet. Please confirm it passes on the next head. The Compose stack is torn down with down -v in CI, so item 2 mostly matters for local runs and for not masking failures.

Poll instance subStatus instead of matching Finished text, assert the saved name and WriteLine payload, wait for autosave, and keep cleanup from masking assertion failures. Co-authored-by: Sipke Schoorstra <sipkeschoorstra@outlook.com>

R1 finding 4: removed both Unsaved-changes clicks (the post-rename click and the racy conditional after adding WriteLine). Autosave stays on; the spec waits for the captured payload and for @elsa-workflows-bot review |

Elsa 3 Code Review: APPROVE + HIGH @ 4e56d07
Code Review, Round 2/6
All four Round 1 findings are fixed on this head. I re-read both files in full, not only the diff since 1a3a3047.
1. A failed run can no longer pass (fixed).
Neither file matches the static Finished label any more. The Compose script takes the instance id from the URL and polls GET /workflow-instances/{id} until subStatus === "Finished", with a 30 second deadline and a 250 ms interval. It throws at once on Faulted or a non-OK response, and the timeout message names the last subStatus. Both files then open the WriteLine row and check for Completed with no Faulted in the Workflow journal tree. In journal-tree.tsx the status label and event names only render in the detail pane of the clicked row, and rows with a duration show elapsed time instead. So Completed comes from the selected step, not from a static label.
2. Cleanup can't hide the real failure (fixed).
The whole cleanup is one try/catch that ends in console.warn. apiLogin() checks login.ok and that an access token came back, and the DELETE status is checked too.
3. The saved payload is asserted (fixed).
The spec records each POST in saves[]. It waits for name: "Order notice v1" after the rename, then checks for a WriteLine in root.activities and that the name stuck. The Compose script makes the same checks against the real saved definition through by-definition-id, which defaults to Latest.
4. Autosave race (fixed).
Both Unsaved changes clicks are gone. Autosave is the single path: the spec waits for the captured payload and then Saved, with no fixed sleeps.
The new helpers (apiLogin, waitForFinishedInstance, hasWriteLine, assertJournalSucceeded) keep the journeys readable.
Optional, not blocking:
- In the spec, a
Faultederror thrown insideexpect.pollis retried, so it fails at the 30 second timeout rather than at once. The in-memory stub always returnsFinished, soassertJournalSucceededis the real check in that file. - The Compose script reads the saved definition once, right after
Saved. A short poll, as in the spec, would rule out a stale read. - The per-request
fetchin the script'swaitForFinishedInstancehas noAbortSignal.timeout, unlike the readiness loops (CodeRabbit thread, already answered). hasWriteLinerecurses in the script but checks one level in the spec. That's fine for these fixtures.
CI: all 16 check runs on this head passed, including frontend-and-host (paired containers), ubuntu-latest, CodeQL and Greptile, and the CodeRabbit status is green.

Purpose
Add the missing React studio preview core-flow browser tests from the #8986 QA plan, using the existing Playwright host setup and the paired Compose backend check.
Scope
Select one primary concern:
Description
Problem
#8986 requires automated Playwright coverage in CI for sign-in, the workflow list, designer create/edit/save/publish/run, the instance viewer and journal, and settings. Existing specs already cover expressions, tenancy, BPMN, localization, activity settings and navigation, but not that end-to-end path.
Solution
studio/react/tests/core-flows.spec.ts: two readable Playwright cases against the real ASP.NET host (samepnpm test:browserpath CI uses). Elsa API responses are an in-memory backend in the spec so the clicks and saved payloads stay obvious; no extra test framework.studio/react/scripts/test-container-pair.mjsso the paired Compose CI step exercises the same journey against the real reference backend and deletes the temporary definition. This is Part of #8986, not the full QA gate. Still open on that issue: Firefox/WebKit matrix, side-by-side Blazor/React, clean-machine npm/NuGet install proof, hosting-mode expansion beyond the existing opt-in/standalone/Docker CI steps, and a QA PASS post.
Verification
Steps:
cd studio/react && pnpm install --frozen-lockfile && pnpm builddotnet build Elsa.ReactStudio.slnffrom the repository rootpnpm exec playwright install --with-deps chromiumpnpm test:browserExpected outcome:
52 passedlocally, including the two new core-flow cases (0.7s and 3.3s). Full suite 1.4 minutes. The paired-container script change will run in the existing "Verify the paired reference server and Preview containers" CI job.
