feat(studio): list and mark the problems the server finds in a BPMN document - #9045
This is the last step of "validation shown on the elements", the remaining bpmn-js designer item in epic #8898 (Phase 3). The workflow editor's BPMN panel now lists what is wrong with the document, and the designer marks the elements each problem is about. It builds on #9043 (bpmn/analyze reports the refusal) and #9044 (designer problem markers).
Scope
New feature
Description
Problem
A modeler learned why a document would not save only when a save failed. The error was shown as text, with nothing pointing at the element.
Solution
Where problems come from.BpmnModelerSession has the server analyze the document in three cases:
each document the designer loads;
each document a refused save sent;
a successful save, which reports its own import findings without another request.
A refusal is an error. A finding that degrades or drops content is a warning. Info findings are not problems. An analysis the server refuses lists its errors, with the elements its data.elementIds names. An analysis that fails leaves no problems. A later save's result replaces an analysis still in flight.
Panel. The panel lists the problems. Clicking an element id selects that element.
Markers. The session marks every named element through applyMarkers. A designer without markers is left alone.
Elsa.Studio.Bpmn.
Adds BpmnDesignerMarker.
Adds BpmnCanvasHost.ApplyMarkersAsync and ClearMarkersAsync.
The host shim answers null for a designer that has no markers.
Studio model.BpmnImportAnalysisModel.Refusal (with BpmnImportRefusalModel) mirrors the server's.
Public API (additive).
A BpmnModelerSession(IBpmnXmlService, IBpmnInterchangeService, string) constructor. The existing constructor still works and reports no problems.
Problems.
SelectAsync.
Not analyzed between saves. The designer's working copy is analyzed only when it is saved, because the contract's save marks it saved. Analyzing on every change would need a contract member that exports without doing that. That can be a follow-up if the feedback should be live.
Docs. The workflow-editor section of contract.md describes the problems list.
Verification
dotnet test Elsa.Studio.Workflows.Tests (net10.0): 612 passed.
New BpmnModelerSessionProblemsTests (8):
load analysis;
analysis after a refused save;
a successful save's own findings without another request;
a stale analysis being ignored;
a refused analysis with data.elementIds;
a failed analysis;
no analyzer;
selection.
A new editor test checks the panel's list, click-to-select, and the markers applied.
Mutation: removing the stale-analysis guard fails its test.
dotnet test Elsa.Studio.Bpmn.Tests: 32 passed, including the new marker pass-through test.
studio/test/browser/BpmnDesigner, npm test: 50 passed. A new host-shim test covers a designer with markers and one without.
dotnet build Elsa.Studio.Workflows on every target framework: no errors.
The BPMN editor displays server-reported document problems, including errors when a save is refused and warnings about content that may be changed or dropped. Informational findings are not shown.
The editor analyzes loaded documents and documents sent in refused saves. After a successful save, it displays findings returned with the save response.
Select an associated element from a problem to focus it on the canvas. Designers that support markers also highlight affected elements.
…ocument
The workflow editor's BPMN panel now lists what is wrong with the document:
why an import would refuse it, and findings that degrade or drop content.
The session has POST bpmn/analyze look at each document the designer loads
and each one a refused save sent; a successful save reports its own import
findings. Clicking an element a problem names selects it, and a designer
with problem markers marks those elements on the canvas.
- Elsa.Studio.Bpmn: BpmnDesignerMarker, BpmnCanvasHost.ApplyMarkersAsync and
ClearMarkersAsync; the host shim answers null for a designer without
markers.
- Studio's BpmnImportAnalysisModel gains Refusal.
- BpmnModelerSession gains a constructor taking the analyzer, Problems and
SelectAsync. The existing constructor still works and reports no problems.

The BPMN modeler analyzes loaded documents and save results using the source process ID when available. The editor displays server-reported problems, links problems to canvas elements, and applies optional markers when supported by the designer.

The canvas host forwards optional marker operations. The panel displays problems and selects associated elements. The contract describes the reporting and marker behavior. Tests cover marker forwarding, marker-free designers, and element selection.

Explanation
The title "feat(studio): list and mark the problems the server finds in a BPMN document" matches the main change. The PR adds a Problems panel that lists server-reported BPMN document problems, clicking an element selects it, and the designer marks affected elements. It follows the conventional commit prefix and is a single sentence. At 76 characters it is slightly long but still clear.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template well. It has Purpose, Scope (New feature checked), Description with Problem and Solution, and Verification with a detailed list of tests and results. The Checklist is filled in. Two template items are missing or weak: the Verification section does not use the Steps and Expected outcome format, and the Screenshots / Recordings section is absent even though the change includes UI changes in the workflow editor panel. The Commit Convention section is not a field to fill in.
Resolution
Add a screenshot or recording of the Problems panel and marker display, since the template requires them for UI changes. Also fill in the Verification section using the template's Steps (numbered) and Expected outcome format, so a reviewer can reproduce the behavior in the editor. The rest of the description is complete.

…quests out of Problems
A document that declares more than one process is checked by bpmn/analyze only when it is told which process, so
the editor's analysis now passes the definition's stored Bpmn:SourceProcessId, the process the XML PUT binds. An
analysis request that fails with anything other than a 400 or 422 says nothing about the document, so it now leaves
no problems instead of listing the failure as one.

…ition
The editor keeps the BPMN session, and with it the canvas and its undo history, for as long as the definition id is
the same. An import can bind another process of the document to that definition, so the session's process is now
updated whenever the editor adopts the definition, and the analysis checks that process from then on.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01CfQ8xsHYWP9ZvKcGTTEe1B
Invalidate and restart analysis when ProcessId changes.
When an import keeps the same XML and definition ID but changes ProcessId, the retained session does not reload its canvas. The ProcessId setter also does not advance _analysisSequence or start analysis. Therefore, an analysis for the former process can complete after adoption and publish obsolete Problems and markers for the newly adopted definition.

An import that binds another process of the same document can leave the document unchanged, so nothing reloaded
and the problems shown were still those of the former process. Setting a different ProcessId now analyzes the
document again for the new process, and the newer sequence keeps an analysis still in flight for the former
process from replacing its result.

[Claude] I've fixed CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding: changing ProcessId now re-analyzes the document for the new process (848ea22), and a test covers it.
Await the former analysis task before asserting the save result.
Task.Yield() does not ensure that the completed analysis has resumed. The test can assert before the stale analysis applies its result and can pass despite a regression.
Capture the task before SaveAsync(), because the save replaces _session.Analysis with its own completion task.

Task.Yield does not ensure the superseded analysis has run its sequence check, so the two stale-analysis tests could
pass before it applied its result. Both now await that analysis's own task before asserting.
