perf: cut queries on announce, list and middleware hot paths - #61
Conversation
- tracker: cache passkey/infohash/snatch lookups in memory (30s, cleared on ban, role, passkey reset, approval and deletion); one users UPDATE for upload, download and bonus points; single-statement HnR seed time update; bonus Redis operations batched in MULTI - peer counts cached 10s per torrent and fetched in one pipeline for lists, Torznab and RSS - banned IPs kept in memory (reloaded every 30s and on ban/unban) - auth status: existence check instead of counting users; the client stops refetching it on every navigation (at most once a minute) - snatches are recorded even when HnR is disabled (as exempt), so seeding bonus keeps working for downloaders - index torrents.created_at for date-sorted lists Announce update: 1397 -> 8239 req/s (p50 32ms -> 4ms), 9 -> 2 SQL queries. Torrent list: 458 -> 671 req/s, Torznab search: 433 -> 599 req/s. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThis change adds short-lived caches for tracker lookups, IP bans, and torrent statistics; updates tracker announce and HnR accounting; invalidates caches after selected admin and torrent operations; batches statistics reads across listing endpoints; adds a torrent creation-date index; and caches client auth status between middleware runs. Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The caching speeds up hot paths. However, a ban or unban that lands during a cache reload can be ignored for up to 30 seconds. Stale peer entries can also build up in Redis. Fix the invalidation race before merging. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Review comments at @server/redis/cache.ts:
- Around line 199-205: In the pipeline result handling for each hash, check the
peer and completion command errors before constructing TorrentStats; skip
caching statistics for that hash if either command failed.
- Around line 143-154: Update getStatsMany to remove stale and invalid peer
records from the Redis hash during stats-cache misses, batching the removals
rather than issuing one deletion per entry. Adjust countPeers or its caller to
retain the hash fields for entries it skips, while preserving counts for active
peers.
Review comments at @server/utils/bannedIps.ts:
- Around line 37-39: Update invalidateBannedIps to advance a cache generation
when clearing cache. In load, capture the generation before fetching and publish
the result only if it still matches; ensure requests after invalidation start a
fresh load rather than reuse an older in-flight load.
Review comments at @server/utils/ttlCache.ts:
- Around line 39-62: Update TtlCache’s getOrLoad, delete, and clear methods so
invalidation prevents older in-flight loads from repopulating entries: track a
generation, capture it when a load starts, and cache its result only if the
generation is unchanged. Increment the generation and clear pending loads during
delete and clear; ensure a finishing load removes its pending entry only if it
is still the current promise for that key.

- TtlCache and banned IP cache: a load started before an invalidation no longer writes its stale result back, and later callers do not join it - getStatsMany: delete stale and invalid peers it finds (they used to be cleaned by getPeers on every count), and never cache counts built from a failed pipeline command Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Results
Benchmarked on a production build (
node .output/server/index.mjs) against a local Postgres and Redis. The data set is 2000 users and 500 approved torrents, and the load is 50 concurrent clients using real passkeys and info hashes.startedGET /api/torrents(25 per page)GET /api/torrents/:hashGET /api/auth/statusWork per request:
After the run, I checked that every account was credited and that the peers were stored.
Changes
Tracker announce (the hottest path)
UPDATE usersnow covers upload, download and bonus points; before, there were two.SELECT+UPDATE.MULTI, so 2 round trips instead of 4.Peer counts
getStatsManyfetches every torrent of a page in one Redis pipeline. It is used by the torrent list, Torznab, both RSS feeds and user uploads.Every request
/api/auth/status: checks that a user exists instead of counting the wholeuserstable./api/auth/statusand refetches the session on every page navigation. Once setup is done it can't come back, and session stats refresh at most once a minute; the header refresh button still forces it.Database
