35 of 55 import-blocked specs depend on a Rust-dialect module: a ceiling, not a backlog #5173
Description
Re-filed from #2688. An attempt claimed that issue on 2026-09-24 and left an empty branch, and a dispatch row that has spent its retry ceiling keeps its issue for good - so no bee could take it again, however much the brief improved. The work below is carried over unchanged.
Two findings, one measurement.
1. The prelude duplicated a name the spec declares. The emitter writes
fn pow(x: f64, y: f64) f64 { return std.math.pow(f64, x, y); }
whenever a spec mentions pow. specs/math/constants.t27 declares its own
fn pow, so the file did not compile: duplicate struct member name 'pow'.
The guard now checks that the spec does not declare the name, for pow,
expect and assert alike, in both preludes.
29 specs import math/constants, every one of them clean in its own file. It
looked like the largest single lever in the corpus. It moved nothing:
ast-check valid 150 -> 150
compiled and ran 46 -> 46
assertions 387 -> 387
The duplicate is gone and the next error underneath it is
use of undeclared identifier 'let'. Which leads to the second finding.
2. specs/math/constants.t27 is a Rust-dialect spec -- it is entry in
specs/RUST_DIALECT.json, let/-> throughout, 28 such lines. The emitter is
not expected to parse it.
So the 29 specs blocked by it are blocked by a dependency that is out of scope
by declaration. Counting that across the corpus:
| clean in their own file, blocked inside an import | 55 |
|---|---|
| blocked by a RUST-DIALECT module | 35 |
| blocked only by t27-dialect modules | 20 |
That is a ceiling, not a backlog. 35 specs cannot run however good the emitter
gets; they need math/constants and its neighbours converted from Rust to t27.
The actionable remainder is 20 import-blocked plus 32 with own-file errors.
Worth stating plainly because the ranking by "specs blocked" points straight at
the 29 and would have kept pointing there.

Every one of these reads and prints; none of them writes. Run them from the repository root, with <spec> replaced by the file in ## Boundary:
.t27 is not Rust and not Zig, and a bee fluent in either writes one by
accident. Measured 2026-09-20: a bee filled eight bodies in
specs/file/watcher.t27 with return Ok(());, Err(FileError::WatcherNotFound)
and for i in 0..watchers.length. The parse ratchet refused the whole file --
Unexpected token in expression: RParen, line 123 -- and a spec that does not
parse generates nothing, so every test it already carried stopped running.
At the top level the parser accepts exactly these eight forms, with an optional
pub, and no others:
const var fn enum struct test invariant bench
There is no trait, no impl, no type X = ..., no generics, no macro. What
a bee reaches for from another language, and what happens:
- Rust's result sugar (
Ok(()),Err(E::V),?) is not a construct here. - Rust macros (
println!,format!,vec!) are not constructs here. - A range loop (
for i in 0..n) is Rust and Zig, not this language. - Zig builtins (
catch unreachable,@intCast,@constCast) are not constructs here. - Cross-module reuse (
use other::fn;) parses and then generates a comment and an unqualified call, so the Zig fails withuse of undeclared identifier(use a::b; generates no import, so no spec can reuse a function from another spec #4298). It does not work yet.

Closing as obsolete. This was a measurement report, and both of its premises have moved on master (3cea5b2).
t27c gen specs/math/constants.t27now emits a singlefn pow, because the pow prelude is gone, and nolet/mut/->, because the lexer andparse_local_decllower them (bootstrap/src/compiler.rs:417, 3911). Converting the Rust-dialect corpus is a separate owner decision, tracked through specs/RUST_DIALECT.json (c768cac, #4743).Triage for the review jam, #5776: this card was escalated because it states no acceptance criterion the Queen can read.
