Summary

Reimplemented from scratch against current master — supersedes #614, which had overwritten sources.rs's core scanning adapter with unrelated content and committed debug scratch scripts (see #614's close comment for the full diagnosis).

Per item #185 (candidate b of item #166's design-spec): a category frontmatter field, defaulting to the first tag when unset, plus one read-only skill_categories MCP tool.

  • New category column, threaded through Frontmatter/SkillEntry/BundleEntry (round-trips through hub export/import too) and db::rebuild's insert.
  • New search::list_categories/skills_in_category read helpers + matching Registry methods.
  • skill_categories MCP tool: omit category for every category with its skill count (most populated first); pass one to list its skills.

Closes item #185.

Test plan

  • cargo build/clippy/fmt clean against CI's exact invocations
  • 70 skill-registry tests (7 new) pass
  • 246 mcp_server tests pass
  • 12 cli::skill tests pass

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added skill categories, with support for explicit metadata and tag-based fallback.
    • Added category listings with skill counts.
    • Added filtering to view skills within a selected category.
    • Added the skill_categories MCP tool for category discovery and filtering.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Preserved category information when bundling, exporting, rebuilding, and syncing skills.

Reimplemented from scratch against current master -- the prior branch
had overwritten sources.rs's SkillEntry scanning adapter (load.rs's
default_sources/scan_sources/validate_entry dependency) with an
unrelated SkillSpec/TOML module and committed a pile of debug scratch
scripts, and was badly stale besides. See PR #614's close comment.

Per item #185 (candidate b of item #166's design-spec): a `category`
frontmatter field, defaulting to the first tag when unset, plus one
read-only skill_categories MCP tool.

- crates/skill-registry: category column (0004_category.sql), threaded
  through Frontmatter/SkillEntry/BundleEntry (so it round-trips through
  hub export/import, not just local scans) and db::rebuild's insert.
  New search::list_categories/skills_in_category read helpers and
  matching Registry methods.
- skill_categories MCP tool: omit `category` for every category with
  its skill count (most populated first); pass one to list its skills.
- Three pre-existing SkillEntry literals in src/cli/skill.rs (export,
  hub push, DB-only-source carry-forward) updated for the new field.

Verified: cargo build/clippy/fmt clean against CI's exact invocations;
70 skill-registry tests (7 new) + 246 mcp_server tests + 12 cli::skill
tests all pass.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Changes

The skill registry now resolves and stores skill categories. It adds category query APIs, preserves categories in bundles, initializes category fields across entry creation paths, and exposes category listing through the MCP server.

Skill category support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Category resolution
crates/skill-registry/src/frontmatter.rs, crates/skill-registry/src/sources.rs
Frontmatter and SkillEntry support categories. Resolution uses explicit frontmatter, then the first tag, then an empty value.
Category persistence and bundles
crates/skill-registry/src/migrations/0004_category.sql, crates/skill-registry/src/db.rs, crates/skill-registry/src/pack.rs
The database stores non-null categories. Bundle serialization and deserialization preserve category values.
Category queries and registry APIs
crates/skill-registry/src/search.rs, crates/skill-registry/src/load.rs
The registry lists category counts and lists skill name/source pairs for a category. Tests cover ordering, uncategorized skills, and unknown categories.
MCP and entry creation integration
src/mcp_server/types.rs, src/mcp_server.rs, src/cli/skill.rs
The read-only skill_categories MCP tool supports category listing and filtering. CLI-created entries initialize category.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f2874

The PR adds category taxonomy and retrieval, but several export, hub, provisioning, and legacy-import paths can silently lose or misclassify category data, while the uncategorized result cannot be queried successfully. Merge should wait for these bounded correctness issues to be fixed or explicitly accepted.

Preserve the stored category when reconstructing SkillEntry.

skill_registry::load returns no category, and these constructors replace every stored category with String::new(). Exported bundles and hub pushes therefore lose categories. Provisioning also clears categories from database-only skills during rebuild.

Populate categories before bundle export.

SkillBundle::new copies e.category at Line 39, but the database-backed SkillEntry builders in src/cli/skill.rs set category: String::new() in run_export (Lines 565-594), HubAction::Push (Lines 612-673), and run_provision (Lines 750-864). These paths therefore export or clone stored skills with empty categories, so later imports and rebuilds lose category counts and filters. Read the stored category before constructing each SkillEntry.

Derive categories for legacy bundle entries.

When BundleEntry::category is absent, #[serde(default)] sets it to "". SkillBundle::to_entries then copies this value without applying the first-tag fallback. run_import and hub pulls can therefore rebuild tagged legacy entries as uncategorized. Preserve field absence or derive the category from be.tags.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the uncategorized category key queryable.

The list path converts the stored empty category to "uncategorized". The filter path then queries the literal "uncategorized" value. A client that selects the returned uncategorized category gets no uncategorized skills.

Return the empty category key with a separate display label, or add an unambiguous uncategorized filter value.
