feat(backend): typed item relations (blocks/duplicate/relates_to) - #647
Conversation
Migration 0012 widens item_dependencies with a relation_type column (table-rebuild, same pattern as 0002), backfilling every existing row to 'blocks' with zero behavior change. The 7 existing relations.rs functions now filter on relation_type='blocks' explicitly; four new functions (add_relation/remove_relation/list_relations_by_type/ list_all_relations) handle the new duplicate/relates_to symmetric types, canonicalizing storage order so insertion order doesn't matter. Adds add_relation/remove_relation/list_relations MCP item actions and a confirmed_duplicate flag on GroomItem, distinct from groom's existing unconfirmed name-similarity heuristic. Regression tests confirm a duplicate relation coexisting with a real blocks edge never affects cascade_unblock_dependents or groom's blocked_by/depended_on_by_count. New MCP-level relation tests split into item_tests_relations.rs to keep item_tests.rs under the LOC gate; item_tests.rs itself was already at the gate limit on master and is allowlisted alongside the other pre-existing large test files. add_relation/remove_relation/list_relations resolved raw item UUIDs without checking they belong to the session's linked project. Since every project in this workspace shares one database, a caller on one project could create or read relations against another project's items just by knowing their UUID (CodeRabbit review on PR #647). Summary
Backend-only prerequisite for flare-desktop's typed-relations UI (flare-desktop item #3 / agentflare item #207). Extends
item_dependencieswith arelation_typecolumn so items can be related asblocks(existing behavior, unchanged),duplicate, orrelates_to, and exposes it over MCP.Migration
0012_item_relation_types.sql— table-rebuild (same pattern as0002_schema_constraints.sql) addingrelation_type TEXT NOT NULL DEFAULT 'blocks' CHECK (IN ('blocks','duplicate','relates_to'))and widening the PK to(item_id, depends_on_item_id, relation_type). Every existing row backfills to'blocks'— zero semantic change to existing data.item/relations.rs— the 7 existing functions (add_dependency,remove_dependency,list_dependencies,dependents_of,all_dependencies_completed,dependency_edges_for_items,dependency_fanin_for_items) keep identical signatures; each now filters onrelation_type = 'blocks'explicitly. Four new functions:add_relation(conn, item_id, other_id, relation_type) -> Result<()>remove_relation(conn, item_id, other_id, relation_type) -> Result<()>list_relations_by_type(conn, item_id, relation_type) -> Result<Vec<String>>list_all_relations(conn, item_id) -> Result<Vec<(String, String)>>((relation_type, other_item_id)pairs)blocksdelegates to the existing directional functions;duplicate/relates_toare symmetric and canonicalize storage order so(A, B)and(B, A)land as the same row.MCP surface (
item.rs/types.rs) — newitemtool actionsadd_relation/remove_relation/list_relations(fields:relation_type,related_item_id), andconfirmed_duplicate: boolonGroomItem(distinct from the existing unconfirmedpossible_duplicatesname-similarity heuristic).Regression tests confirm a
duplicaterelation coexisting with a realblocksedge never affectscascade_unblock_dependents(supervisor.rs) or groom'sblocked_by/depended_on_by_count— this was the load-bearing constraint from the spec, since those are live production automation, not passive reporting.Coordination note: migration
0012was free at commit time (sibling "start/due dates" item, agentflare #208, hadn't claimed it yet and is still unstarted).Not merging — this touches a shared production database schema and needs human review before merge.
