Everything looks as expected for a pure extraction (net deletion in paths.rs, new crate added). This is ready to hand off.

Status

Implemented Step 1 of #257's config-centralization plan:

  • New crates/agentflare-config crate with home() (identical logic/env var to the old paths::home()), a new config_dir(namespace: &str) per the design spec (~/.config/agentflare/<namespace>), and test_support::with_temp_home (moved verbatim, including its 3 regression tests for the Windows leftover-file/thread-contention/env-cleanup flakes).
  • src/paths.rs::home() is now a one-line wrapper (agentflare_config::home()); test_support::with_temp_home there is a re-export so the ~80 existing crate::paths::test_support::with_temp_home call sites are untouched. with_temp_cwd stayed in paths.rs (out of scope per the task).
  • Registered the new crate in the workspace and root Cargo.toml.

Design note: the spec says agentflare-config should have no dependency on any existing agentflare crate, but with_temp_home must share agent_registry::detect::PATH_LOCK — using a separate mutex would reintroduce the exact set_var data race the original code's comments warn about (concurrent set_var calls on different vars are UB regardless of which lock guards which). agent-registry is a leaf crate (no agentflare-crate deps of its own), so this doesn't create a cycle. I judged correctness over the aspirational purity for this zero-behavior-change step; worth confirming with whoever does step 2+.

Verification (all synchronous, sccache disabled — the ambient sccache wrapper in this sandbox is broken and throws spurious EROFS errors on .d file writes, unrelated to this change):

  • cargo test -p agentflare-config — 4/4 pass
  • cargo test -p agentflare --bin agentflare -- paths:: — 4/4 pass (including the new wrapper delegation test)
  • cargo check --workspace — clean (only pre-existing unsafe_code=warn noise)
  • cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy --no-deps on the new crate — clean

No concerns beyond the design-spec deviation noted above.

Implemented Step 1 of #257's config-centralization plan:

- New `crates/agentflare-config` crate with `home()` (identical logic/env var to the old `paths::home()`), a new `config_dir(namespace: &str)` per the design spec (`~/.config/agentflare/<namespace>`), and `test_support::with_temp_home` (moved verbatim, including its 3 regression tests for the Windows leftover-file/thread-contention/env-cleanup flakes).
- `src/paths.rs::home()` is now a one-line wrapper (`agentflare_config::home()`); `test_support::with_temp_home` there is a re-export so the ~80 existing `crate::paths::test_support::with_temp_home` call sites are untouched. `with_temp_cwd` stayed in `paths.rs` (out of scope per the task).
- Registered the new crate in the workspace and root `Cargo.toml`.

**Design note:** the spec says `agentflare-config` should have no dependency on any existing agentflare crate, but `with_temp_home` must share `agent_registry::detect::PATH_LOCK` — using a separate mutex would reintroduce the exact `set_var` data race the original code's comments warn about (concurrent `set_var` calls on different vars are UB regardless of which lock guards which). `agent-registry` is a leaf crate (no agentflare-crate deps of its own), so this doesn't create a cycle. I judged correctness over the aspirational purity for this zero-behavior-change step; worth confirming with whoever does step 2+.

**Verification (all synchronous, sccache disabled — the ambient `sccache` wrapper in this sandbox is broken and throws spurious `EROFS` errors on `.d` file writes, unrelated to this change):**
- `cargo test -p agentflare-config` — 4/4 pass
- `cargo test -p agentflare --bin agentflare -- paths::` — 4/4 pass (including the new wrapper delegation test)
- `cargo check --workspace` — clean (only pre-existing `unsafe_code=warn` noise)
- `cargo fmt --check` and `cargo clippy --no-deps` on the new crate — clean

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The workspace adds agentflare-config with shared home and configuration-directory APIs. Existing path resolution delegates to the new crate. Temporary-home test support and related tests move into the shared crate.

Changes

Configuration path centralization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register the configuration crate
Cargo.toml, crates/agentflare-config/Cargo.toml
The workspace includes agentflare-config, declares its local dependency, and adds the crate manifest with dependencies, package metadata, and lint settings.
Implement configuration path APIs
crates/agentflare-config/src/lib.rs
The crate adds home(), config_dir(), serialized temporary-home support, and tests for isolation, cleanup, contention, and namespaced paths.
Delegate existing path helpers
src/paths.rs
paths::home() delegates to agentflare_config::home(). The existing test support re-exports the shared helper, and the remaining test checks delegation.

The shared test helper can corrupt process state, trigger unsafe concurrent environment access, and let tests touch real user configuration. These issues should be fixed before merge.

Honor the temporary-home override in config_dir().

config_dir() calls dirs::config_dir() directly, so code running under with_temp_home() can still read or write the real user configuration directory. Make config_dir() use the same synchronized in-process override state as with_temp_home(). Preserve the platform-specific configuration-directory layout instead of reading AGENTFLARE_HOME_OVERRIDE directly or hard-coding .config.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not rely on PATH_LOCK to make process environment mutation safe.

PATH_LOCK serializes cooperating writers only. Public functions such as home() can read the environment without this lock while another test executes set_var() or remove_var().

On platforms where concurrent environment access is unsafe, this violates the safety requirement of these unsafe calls. Replace the test overrides with synchronized in-process state. If flare-vault also requires an override, provide a corresponding in-process test API there.

Restore the previous environment values.

The drop guard always removes both overrides. If either variable existed before with_temp_home(), the helper destroys that process state after the callback.

Store each previous OsString value before replacement. Restore the stored value during cleanup. Remove a variable only when it was initially absent. Add a regression test with pre-existing values.

Based on learnings, tests that mutate process-global environment variables must restore the original state even if the test action throws.
