chore: agent-browser auto-install resolves a dead mise shim instead of the mise-managed binary - #751
Conversation
**What I did**: Fixed `find_backend()` in `crates/flare-browser/src/lib.rs` — it scanned every `PATH` dir for a file named `agent-browser`, so if mise's shims dir (`~/.local/share/mise/shims`) happened to be on `PATH`, it picked up the shim placed there by `mise install`. That shim is dead on arrival: the sidecar is deliberately `mise install`ed but never `mise use`d (per `browser_install.rs`'s module doc), so the shim has no active version to resolve and fails when invoked directly, instead of the absolute binary `mise where` resolves. Added `is_mise_shims_dir()` (mirrors the existing hardcoded-path convention in `daemon_autostart.rs`) and made `find_backend()` skip that directory during the `PATH` scan, so it correctly falls through to the cached/`mise where`-resolved absolute path. **Tests**: Added two unit tests (`is_mise_shims_dir_matches_only_the_real_shims_path`, `find_backend_skips_a_dead_mise_shim_on_path`) using a fake `HOME`/tempdir, following the existing env-mutation test pattern in this file. Ran synchronously in the foreground: - `cargo build -p flare-browser` — clean - `cargo nextest run -p flare-browser` — 11/11 pass - `cargo nextest run -p agentflare browser_install` (full workspace build, ~7 min) — 5/5 pass, no regressions - `cargo clippy -p flare-browser --all-targets` — clean - `cargo fmt -p flare-browser -- --check` — clean after one auto-format pass **Concerns**: The fix is Unix-only (`#[cfg(any(target_os = "macos", target_os = "linux"))]`), matching the only existing precedent for this exact mise-shims-path pattern in the codebase (`daemon_autostart.rs`). I couldn't verify mise's default Windows shims location (flare-search and WebFetch/WebSearch were both unavailable this session — flare-search returned "readonly database" errors and native web tools are policy-blocked), so I didn't guess a Windows path rather than risk landing an unverified one; Windows `find_backend()` behavior is unchanged. lean-ctx MCP tools were also down all session with the same "readonly database" error, so exploration used native Read/Grep/Bash instead. Serialize all environment-mutating tests.
Both platform-gated tests use only #[test], so the default Rust test harness can run them concurrently. They mutate process-global HOME, PATH, and CARGO_HOME without a shared lock. Their assertions can therefore observe another test's environment and fail nondeterministically.
The restoration code runs after the assertions, so a panic leaves the modified environment in place. Add one shared environment lock for every test that mutates process-global environment variables. Hold it while saving variables, changing them, running assertions, and restoring them. Use a guard whose Drop implementation restores the saved values during unwinding.
