fix(item): redispatch to another agent stops the previous agent's job (#607) - #787
Conversation
…#607) `item redispatch assignee_agent=<other>` released the old agent's claim but left its job running and its retries queued, so a claim-less zombie kept working and the stale non-terminal job held back the fresh dispatch. - agentflare-jobs: Queue::cancel_for_item cancels an item's queued/retrying in-process jobs immediately (killed) and marks running ones cancel_requested. A running job stays `running` -- so job_in_flight still blocks a second dispatch next to it -- until its executor stops and fail() finishes the row as killed (no retry, no terminal-failure hook). The kill is state-guarded because the MCP process and the daemon worker are different processes. - cancel::register/job_cancelled: process-wide registry keyed by job id. The agent CLI runs on a spawn_blocking thread and only receives the claim-owner string (<agent>:<job-id>), so run_captured derives the job id from that. Checked before spawning each turn and ~1/s while it runs; a cancelled child is killed and reported as its own outcome (not a timeout). - The pipeline refuses to start another turn, retry, or finalize (push / PR) for a cancelled job; execute_work skips the failure comment/notify and releases only a lease still held under the job's own owner id (it must not re-acquire the claim reassignment just released). - Cancel failures are surfaced in the redispatch response (warning), not only logged. The queue can be injected for tests via job_queue_override. Only redispatch cancels. A plain `item update` reassignment keeps its old behavior (release the claim only): it does not re-arm the item, so cancelling there would strand it with no job. Fence finalization against reassignment.
The cancellation check runs only once. item_redispatch releases the old claim before it cancels the old job, so item_done can reacquire an absent claim under the old owner and auto-commit, push, open a PR, or mark the newly assigned item completed. If a new claim already exists, item_done rejects the stale owner, but later comment_impl and notify calls do not recheck cancellation or ownership.
Carry a reassignment generation or fencing token through finalization. Require item_done to validate that token and the current owner atomically, and prevent it from reacquiring a claim for a stale run. Apply the same fence before comments and notifications.

…re spawn (#607) Address CodeRabbit review on #787: - Queue::cancel_for_item and Queue::fail run in IMMEDIATE transactions, so the MCP server's cancel and the daemon's fail/dequeue (separate processes) can't interleave a cancel_requested read with the state write and re-queue a cancelled job. - run_in_process registers the cancel check before spawning the executor thread and moves the guard into it, so a timed-out attempt's unscheduled thread can't register after a retry's and replace it. - redispatch cancels the previous agent's jobs before releasing its claim, so a finalizing old job sees the cancel before item_done could re-acquire the released claim. Full fencing of finalization is tracked separately (#611). Problem
item redispatch assignee_agent=<other>released the old agent's claim but left its job running and its retries queued. The result was a claim-less zombie working in the old agent's worktree, and the stale non-terminal job held back the fresh dispatch for the new agent (observed on #604).Fix
When
redispatchhands an item to a different agent, the previous agent's jobs for that item are cancelled.agentflare-jobs):Queue::cancel_for_itemkills queued/retry-pending jobs at once and marks running onescancel_requested. A running job staysrunninguntil its executor really stops, sojob_in_flightkeeps blocking a second dispatch next to it. Thenfail()finishes the row askilledwith no retry and no terminal-failure hook. The kill is state-guarded, because the MCP process and the daemon worker are separate processes, and only rows actually cancelled are reported.cancel::register/job_cancelledis a process-wide registry keyed by job id. The agent CLI runs on aspawn_blockingthread and only receives the claim-owner string (<agent>:<job-id>), sorun_capturedderives the job id from that. It checks before each turn and about once a second while running, and a cancelled child is killed and reported as its own outcome, not a timeout. Registrations are token-guarded so an abandoned executor thread can't drop a retry's registration.finalize(push / PR) for a cancelled job. The DB-backed checks run on the blocking pool, not on the shared workflow runtime.execute_workskips the failure comment/notify and releases only a lease still held under the job's own owner id, so it never re-acquires the claim reassignment just released.warningin the redispatch response, not only logged.jobs_cancelledreports the count.Deliberately not changed
item updatereassignment keeps its old behavior (releases the claim only). It does not re-arm the item (ready-for-worklabel, backlog state), so cancelling there would strand the item with no job. Reassign viaredispatchto stop the previous agent.handoff item_id=...also changes the assignee without cancelling. This is a follow-up.cancel_for_itemscans and parses all queued/running payloads, and each redispatch opens its ownQueuehandle. Both are fine at current volumes and can be optimized later.Verification
