Summary

  • item list dropped any item with an open blocks dependency when that item was assigned to another agent: the implicit inbox filter ran before blocking was known, so blocked=true returned nothing while search still showed blocked_by.
  • The implicit inbox now keeps those rows. An explicit assignee_agent still narrows the queue. blocked=true / blocked=false partition a dependency chain.
  • blocks direction is stated on the tool: add_relation id=X related_item_id=Y relation_type=blocks records that X depends on Y, and list_relations on X returns that dependency.

Test plan

  • cargo fmt --all --check
  • mbx test -p agentflare-backend item (137 passed)
  • mbx test -p agentflare mcp_server (415 passed), including item_list_returns_open_dependency_chain_with_blocked_by
  • mbx clippy --locked --workspace --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings -A unsafe_code -A clippy::pedantic (CI clippy flags)
  • bash scripts/loc-gate.sh

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Open items blocked by dependencies now remain visible in unfiltered inbox listings, even when assigned to another agent. Explicit assignee filters continue to show only items assigned to the selected agent.
    • Dependency filters now correctly distinguish items that are blocked from those that are not.
  • Improvements
    • Clarified how dependency relationships work: an item marked as depending on another is blocked by that other item, and its listed relationships show its dependencies.

The implicit inbox filter ran before blocking was known, so an item with an open dependency assigned to another agent vanished from list, including blocked=true, while search still returned blocked_by. State that add_relation id=X related_item_id=Y relation_type=blocks means X depends on Y.

📝 Walkthrough

The implicit inbox now retains items with open dependencies, including items assigned to other agents. Explicit assignee filters remain limited to the selected agent. Tool descriptions clarify the direction of blocks relations.

Normal item listing can fail for projects with enough items. Bound the signal queries before merging unless that project-size limitation is explicitly accepted.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Bound the candidate-ID query before computing signals.

When a project has more candidate items than SQLite permits SQL parameters, compute_filter_signals passes all their IDs to dependency_edges_for_items. Its IN query then fails, so even a default list request for a small inbox returns an error. This change makes the project-wide item count, rather than the narrowed inbox count, determine whether the query succeeds. SQLite’s default limit is 32,766 parameters in recent versions, though builds can change it. Batch the ID-based signal queries or use project-scoped joins that do not require one parameter per item.
