Summary

  • After uloop simulate-keyboard --action ReleaseAll (and successful KeyUp), a held key no longer stays pressed in gameplay polling across Play Mode pause/resume.
  • The response now reports DeferredLatchSyncScheduled when a follow-up player-update latch sync was queued, instead of implying the device is already clean for Update polling.

User Impact

  • Before: ReleaseAll could return success while Play Mode was paused, then after resume Keyboard.current.<key>.isPressed stayed true with ReadValue already 0, so characters kept moving.
  • After: the same recovery path schedules a one-shot sync on the next player Input System update (Dynamic/Fixed/Manual). Resume no longer leaves a stale press latch.

Changes

  • Keep the existing immediate ForceSync gate (editor-view cases it can already catch).
  • Register InputSystem.onAfterUpdate only while playing; merge keys if already registered; do not consume the one-shot on Editor updates (pause only runs those).
  • Unsubscribe before ForceSync so nested InputSystem.Update cannot recurse.
  • Wire DeferredLatchSyncScheduled and a fixed message note on ReleaseAll/KeyUp.

Limitations

  • onBeforeUpdate was evaluated for same-frame sync. ForceSync needs a press→release pair via RunExplicitUpdate; nesting InputSystem.Update from onBeforeUpdate of an in-flight player update is reentrant, so this PR uses onAfterUpdate.
  • Gameplay code that polls during that same player input update may still observe the stale latch. Polling from Update after that input update should see the key up. The first nested update inside ForceSync can briefly show isPressed=true / ReadValue=1 to other onAfterUpdate subscribers (the press half of the latch reset).
  • Pause: the callback waits until the first player update after resume and does not block the CLI response.

Verification

  • uloop compile: ErrorCount 0
  • PlayMode --filter-value 'DeferredPlayerLatchSync|SimulateKeyboardRelease|ReleasedKeyStateMapping|KeyDown_Should_HoldKeyUntilKeyUp': 17 passed
  • Mutation: forcing Editor ticks to unsubscribe failed Decide_WhenEditor_DoesNotSyncAndDoesNotUnsubscribe, then reverted
  • Live: KeyDown W/D → Pause → ReleaseAll (DeferredLatchSyncScheduled: true) → Resume → 12 Dynamic samples. Oldest sample was the ForceSync press pulse (D.isPressed=True, ReadValue=1); the other 11 were isPressed=False / ReadValue=0 (pre-fix this path stayed isPressed=true / ReadValue=0)

Review in cubic

ReleaseAll while paused can skip the immediate ForceSync gate because it
reads the editor view. A one-shot onAfterUpdate callback now ForceSyncs on
the next Dynamic/Fixed/Manual update so resume does not keep isPressed true
while ReadValue is already 0.

Walkthrough

The keyboard simulation flow now schedules one-shot player-latch synchronization after successful ReleaseAll and KeyUp operations. Responses report scheduling status, and PlayMode tests cover update types, device state, formatting, and cleanup.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 2e56a

The PR is merge-ready after normal checks; the remaining follow-up is limited to resetting static play-mode hook state between tests and does not create an actionable product or runtime merge blocker.

Reset the play-mode hook state in ResetForTests.

ResetForTests leaves EditorApplication.playModeStateChanged subscribed and playModeExitHooked set. Clear both static values so later tests start with clean state.
