Summary

  • The run-tests timeout and cancel-method lookup unit tests now run in pull request CI (and nightly) instead of nowhere.
  • The stop/restore cases that could no longer build outside Unity move to EditMode, keeping the three that had no EditMode equivalent.

User Impact

  • No runtime behavior changes. This is test and CI maintenance only.
  • Before: tests/RunTestsExecutionTimeout.UnitTests was never referenced by any workflow or script, so its 14 timeout and cancel-method lookup cases protected nothing. It also stopped building after fix: Harden IPC contracts, empty RPC errors, and Settings async UI #1778, because RunTestsCancelStopRestore.cs started using the Unity-only MainThreadSwitcher, which the csproj cannot reference (CS0234).
  • After: the project builds again and runs in the same pull request CI step as the other dotnet unit test projects.

Changes

  • Drop RunTestsCancelStopRestore.cs from the dotnet csproj and delete the dotnet RunTestsCancelStopRestoreTests.cs (6 cases). That class is already covered in EditMode by Assets/Tests/Editor/RunTestsCancelStopRestoreTests.cs.
  • Port the 3 deleted cases that had no EditMode equivalent:
    • a throwing cancel hook during a PlayMode run still falls back to requesting and confirming the exit
    • an EditMode run without a cancel hook skips the cancel even when a run GUID is present, and does not fall into the catch-all
    • the internal stop-wait delays receive CancellationToken.None (the scripted Play Mode answers now reach the delay hook; the dotnet original never did)
  • Not ported, because an equal or stronger EditMode test exists:
    • WhenPlayModeIsActive_ShouldExitThenConfirmBeforeReturning → PlayModeThatExits_RequestsAndConfirmsTheExit
    • WhenPlayModeExitNeverConfirms_ShouldTimeOutWithoutThrowing → PlayModeThatNeverExits_ReportsTheUnconfirmedExit
    • WhenDelayThrows_ShouldReturnDegradedResultWithoutThrowing → WhenAHookThrowsOutsideItsGuard_SwallowsTheFailure (a different hook throws, but it goes through the same catch-all)
  • Add dotnet test tests/RunTestsExecutionTimeout.UnitTests/... to the Run concurrency unit tests step in unity-compile-check-and-test-runner.yml and unity-editmode-tests.yml.

Verification

  • uloop compile on Unity 2022.3: 0 errors.
  • uloop run-tests --filter-type class --filter-value RunTestsCancelStopRestoreTests: 14 passed, 0 failed (11 existing + 3 ported).
  • dotnet build tests/RunTestsExecutionTimeout.UnitTests/RunTestsExecutionTimeout.UnitTests.csproj --configuration Release: Build succeeded, 0 errors.
  • dotnet test results for this project are checked in this PR's Run concurrency unit tests log.

The dotnet project compiled RunTestsCancelStopRestore.cs, which has used the
Unity-only MainThreadSwitcher since #1778, so the project no longer built
outside Unity. Drop that source from the csproj and delete its dotnet tests.

Three of the six deleted cases had no EditMode equivalent and are ported:
a throwing cancel hook in a PlayMode run still falls back to the exit, an
EditMode run without a cancel hook skips the cancel even with a run GUID,
and the internal waits receive CancellationToken.None. The PlayMode wait
case queues four answers so the delay hook is actually reached.
No workflow or script ever ran tests/RunTestsExecutionTimeout.UnitTests,
so its timeout and cancel-method lookup cases guarded nothing. Add it to
the concurrency unit test step next to the other dotnet projects.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change updates stop-and-restore test coverage, removes a test fixture from the execution-timeout unit-test project, and adds that project to two Unity workflow test commands.

Changes

Stop and restore tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update stop-and-restore test coverage
Assets/Tests/Editor/RunTestsCancelStopRestoreTests.cs, tests/RunTestsExecutionTimeout.UnitTests/RunTestsCancelStopRestoreTests.cs
Editor tests now cover cancellation failure during Play Mode, unavailable cancellation in EditMode, and CancellationToken.None for stop-wait delays. The execution-timeout unit-test fixture was removed.
Run the execution-timeout unit tests in workflows
.github/workflows/unity-compile-check-and-test-runner.yml, .github/workflows/unity-editmode-tests.yml
Both workflows now run the execution-timeout unit-test project under their respective existing conditions and configuration.

Add an Editor test for a throwing delay hook.

The removed .NET test covered a delay-hook exception, but the Editor hook always completes. The existing catch-all test throws from Playing, so no surviving Editor test exercises the delay-failure path or asserts its degraded result.

@coderabbitai Not adding this one. A throwing delay hook escapes from the same catch-all in StopAndRestoreAsync that StopAndRestoreAsync_WhenAHookThrowsOutsideItsGuard_SwallowsTheFailure already pins (warning text, all-false result, degraded note). Which hook throws does not change the path, so a second case would duplicate that test.

@hatayama Thanks for the clarification. The existing test covers the shared catch-all in StopAndRestoreAsync, including the warning and degraded result. A separate throwing-delay test is not needed for that behavior. I withdraw the request.

Learning: In Assets/Tests/Editor/RunTestsCancelStopRestoreTests.cs, the C# NUnit test StopAndRestoreAsync_WhenAHookThrowsOutsideItsGuard_SwallowsTheFailure covers the shared catch-all failure behavior of RunTestsCancelStopRestore.StopAndRestoreAsync in Packages/src/Editor/FirstPartyTools/RunTests/RunTestsCancelStopRestore.cs. Do not request a separate throwing-delay-hook test solely to cover the same warning and degraded-result behavior.
