Jira: XRAY-163145

What changed

  • A scan is no longer skipped when the project folder's own name matches an exclusion.
  • A path outside the project is no longer excluded because of its own name.
  • Paths inside the project, such as a nested test or node_modules folder, are still excluded.
  • Package, secret, and IaC scans use the same rule.

Heads-up

  • This branch sits on the open XRAY-159762 pull request, so the diff against main also contains that work until it merges.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Scan targets now respect exclusions from the selected configuration profile instead of custom CLI exclusions. When custom CLI exclusions are overridden, the command logs that they were discarded.
    • Paths outside a project root, and the root directory itself, are no longer excluded based only on their names.
    • SCA scans now apply exclusions from the configuration profile when available, otherwise using CLI exclusions or the default exclusions. Patterns are normalized before scanning.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected exclusion handling so project roots and paths outside the project are not excluded based on matching names.
    • Explicitly named working directories remain eligible for scanning even when they match CLI exclusion patterns. Missing directories are warned about and omitted.
    • Wildcard working-directory patterns expand to matching directories, including nested matches where applicable; no target is created when none are found.
    • Directories excluded by configuration profiles continue to be skipped.
    • Module exclusion patterns no longer skip scanners based on a target root; scanner exclusions still apply.

Path exclusion matching now applies only within a non-empty root. Audit target creation handles named directories and profile exclusions differently. Deprecated module exclusion patterns no longer skip scanners based on target roots.

Changes: Exclusion Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Root-scoped path matching
utils/paths.go, utils/paths_test.go
Exclusion matching applies to paths within a non-empty root. The root itself and paths outside it are not excluded by basename.
Audit target selection and creation
commands/audit/audit.go, commands/audit/audit_test.go
No-config-profile targets retain named directories despite CLI exclusions. Config-profile module roots and include paths that match profile exclusions are omitted. Missing named paths are warned about and omitted; wildcard working directories expand to existing matches.
Scanner exclusion behavior
jas/common.go, jas/common_test.go
Deprecated module exclusion patterns no longer skip scanners based on target roots. Scanner skipping still checks ExcludeScanners.

Secrets scanning still skips the whole project. I put a secret at the project root and ran jf audit. It's found when the project sits in a plain folder, and missed when the project is named my-test-proj or sits under sbom-test/. Same result on dev.

The reason is the pattern we give the scanner, /test/. The scanner checks it against the file's full path on disk, so "test" anywhere in the path, even above the project, skips everything. When I ran the scanner directly with //test/, it found the secret and still skipped the nested test/ folder.

Maybe should be taken with JAS?

The secrets miss is in the scanner. SkippedDirs is still **/*test*/**, and the scanner matches that against the full path, so a parent folder or a project folder named like test skips every file. The same miss is on dev.

This change leaves those patterns as they are. Please match SkippedDirs relative to the scan root. Running the scanner with <project root>/**/*test*/** finds a secret at the project root and still skips a nested test directory.

Tracked for the scanner in https://jfrog-int.atlassian.net/browse/XRAY-168399.

With --static-sca, a project named like an exclusion is still dropped if you pass it with --working-dirs. From a parent folder, jf audit --static-sca --working-dirs=my-test-proj skips my-test-proj because it matches test. Without --static-sca it's scanned.

Probably need to address this too?

An explicit working directory now stays on the static SCA scan target when its own name matches an exclusion. A config-profile include that matches is still skipped. The ignore list sent to Xray-Lib is unchanged. A scan of jf audit --static-sca --working-dirs=my-test-proj from the parent folder should confirm the plugin does not drop that directory on its own.

After this change, passing the same path as both root and path always returns false. So these three skips can never happen anymore:

  • audit.go:689-695: the "working directory matches exclusion patterns" warning and the include-paths fallback
  • audit.go:814-817: the same warning in the default flow
  • jas/common.go:411: the module skip in ShouldSkipScannerByModule

Those three checks compared a directory with itself, so they could not succeed after the root is no longer excluded by its own name. They are removed. A scanner the module config turns off is still skipped, and a missing working directory still warns.

Resolve relative working directories against root before the existence checks.

GetFullPathsWorkingDirs converts app to a process-cwd absolute path before createScanTarget receives it. When only rootDir/app exists, both existence checks use the wrong path and skip the include. A change only at line 684 does not fix this because the include is already absolute.

Update the new-flow normalization to resolve relative working directories against root, or resolve the include against root before both IsDirExists and IsPathExists.

Update the working-directory normalization in the new flow so relative
directories resolve against root rather than the process working directory, or
resolve includePattern against root before both IsDirExists and IsPathExists
checks in createScanTarget. Preserve existing behavior for absolute paths.

Relative working directories are resolved against the scan root before either existence check. An absolute working directory is left as given.

A wildcard such as src/* stays relative. Turning it into an absolute pattern made directory listing compare a repo-relative path with that absolute pattern, so the include was dropped. Patterns that contain * are also no longer passed to os.Stat. On Windows that call returns an error other than "not exist", and TestDetectScanTargetsNewFlowExpandsWildcardWorkingDir then built no scan target. That is the [windows] Unit Tests failure.

@attiasas The changes you describe address the concern, but I could not verify them in the checked-out PR revision.

  • GetTargetsInfo still calls GetFullPathsWorkingDirs, which applies filepath.Abs to every working directory.
  • createScanTarget still calls IsDirExists before resolving a relative path against root.
  • Wildcard patterns still reach IsDirExists without a wildcard guard.

Please confirm that the fix commit is pushed, then request another check. This finding remains unverified. I did not run the Windows tests.
