My name is John Paul Helveston and I am an Associate Professor in EMSE @ GWU.
On GitHub you'll usually see me contributing to research projects, R packages, courses I develop / teach, or other fun side projects. I speak English, Chinese, R (base + tidyverse), and Python fluently as well as some moderate CSS and HTML. 😄

- cbcTools: An R package with tools for designing choice based conjoint (cbc) survey experiments and conduction power analyses.
- earmark: A Python command line tool that turns documents (PDF, DOCX, EPUB, ...) and article URLs into a private podcast feed, narrated locally with Kokoro-82M. No API keys, no per-minute cost.
- renderthis: Package for rendering media (e.g.,
xaringanslides) into multiple different formats. Co-authored with Garrick Aden-Buie. - assess: A highly opinionated package I use for grading assignments for the courses I teach at George Washington University. It is not necessarily designed for others to use (there isn’t much careful documentation), but you’re welcome to use it if it’s helpful for you!
- vehicletrends: An R data package containing tidy formatted summary data on vehicle trends in the United States. The primary data source is vehicle listings from marketcheck.com, which have been processed into summary statistics including depreciation curves, mileage accumulation, market concentration, and share of listings breakdowns. For a live dashboard of the data, visit vehicletrends.us.
- oica: An R data package containing tidy formatted data on vehicle production and sales from the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA) (English Name: “International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers”). The data are also merged with standard country / area codes come from the United Nations Statistics Division.
- Quarto lexis template: My highly opinionated template for Quarto revealjs slides.
- vehicletrends.us: This site is an ongoing project designed to make publicly available information about trends in the U.S. automotive market. The site pulls together a variety of data sources to reveal trends. See the about page for more details on the data sources and calculations.

- quarto-dashboard: A demo site of how I use the Quarto website framework to build interactive, serverless websites.
- Data Centers vs. States: Dashboard comparing power from select data centers to that of entire U.S. states.
- POTUS Econ Scorecard: An interactive web app that compares economic performance indicators across different presidential administrations.
- EMSE 4571: Intro to Programming for Analytics: A course on the fundamentals of programming and computational thinking in R.

- R for Analytics Primer: A self-guided tutorial for developing a foundation in programming in R for data analysis, including data input/output, data wrangling, and data visualization using the Tidyverse.
- GW Coders: A community organization co-founded by myself and Ryan Watkins that brings together students and faculty to apply computational and data analytics skills in research.

- splitKbCompare: An interactive tool for comparing layouts of different split mechanical keyboards.
- Wireless Corne: Build log and photo gallery for my Wireless Corne keyboard.
- Iris Rev 2: Build log and photo gallery for my Iris Rev 2 keyboard.
- magaScreener: This tool allows you to analyze documents for MAGA-targeted keywords or an uploaded list of keywords. It is useful to help identify words that might get screened by an entity (e.g., the federal government) so you can modify your language accordingly. Just upload a document, and the app will count occurrences of the keywords. Everything runs in the browser.
