Summary

Trivy security scan of the superposition and superposition-demo Docker images, remediation of all fixable CRITICAL/HIGH vulnerabilities in the repository's dependency graph (which feeds the image binary and frontend bundle), migration of both images off the EOL Ubuntu 25.10 base to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS + PostgreSQL 18, and a Trivy CI gate that runs on every PR.

Scan results

Target CRITICAL HIGH Status
Repository dependency lockfiles (initial scan) 8 100 80 remediated; the remaining 28 findings are documented accepts (below)
superposition image (this PR, Ubuntu 26.04) 0 0 clean (47 MEDIUM / 4 LOW)
superposition-demo image (this PR, Ubuntu 26.04 + PostgreSQL 18) 0 0 clean (50 MEDIUM / 5 LOW); 2.19 GB → 992 MB

Fixed (80 of 108 dependency findings)

  • Rust (Cargo.lock, examples/k8s-staggered-releaser/Cargo.lock)
    • aws-lc-sys 0.30.0 -> 0.41.0 (3× AWS-LC signature-validation advisories)
    • quinn-proto 0.11.14 -> 0.11.19 (remote memory exhaustion)
    • rustls-webpki 0.103.4 -> 0.103.13 and 0.102.8 -> 0.103.16 (malformed-CRL panic DoS)
    • AWS SDK stack (aws-config, aws-smithy-*, aws-sdk-sso/sts, aws-sigv4) updated as far as the pinned rustyscript/deno_* stack allows
    • aws-smithy-xml held at 0.60.13 (0.60.14+ requires rustc 1.91, repo pins 1.90)
    • workspace serde stays pinned at =1.0.221 deliberately: swc's ast_node macro (via rustyscript/deno_ast) generates code against serde's private internals (serde::__private), which changed in serde 1.0.225 (renamed) and already mismatches in 1.0.222-1.0.224 (serde_core split) — verified while attempting the bump
  • npm (docs, tooling/lsp/vscode-extension, tests/bun.lock): fast-xml-parser (XSS/DoS), shell-quote (command execution), tinypool (prototype-pollution RCE), proxy-addr (IP spoofing), websocket-driver, minimatch, brace-expansion, js-yaml, lodash, postcss, nanoid, browserslist, svgo, immutable, serialize-javascript, webpack-dev-middleware, follow-redirects, fast-uri, image-size, glob, joi, compression, source-map-js, launch-editor, http-cache-semantics and others. Exact-pinned transitive versions (e.g. @aws-sdk/core -> fast-xml-parser 4.4.1) are fixed via npm/bun overrides.
  • Python: certifi 2024.8.30 -> 2026.10.19 (emSign root CA trust), urllib3 2.7.0 -> 2.8.0 (locust/requirements.txt)

Accepted (28 findings, documented in .trivyignore.yaml; entries expire 2027-01-31)

clients/* policy (18 findings / 14 advisories, ignore entries scoped to clients/**) — clients/* is produced by the smithy codegen pipeline (make smithy-updates); dependency pins there are owned by the codegen configuration, and hand-edits to the generated lockfiles/manifests are overwritten on regeneration. Per project decision these files are left untouched; the advisories are tracked here instead:

Package Advisories
fast-xml-parser 4.4.1 CVE-2026-25896 (CRITICAL, XSS), CVE-2026-26278, CVE-2026-33036
brace-expansion 5.0.5 CVE-2026-102276, CVE-2026-102278, CVE-2026-13149, CVE-2026-14257, CVE-2026-69152
aiohttp 3.13.x CVE-2025-69223, CVE-2026-69244, CVE-2026-111064, CVE-2026-111066, GHSA-2g87-pp6c-29x5
glob 10.4.5 CVE-2025-64756

Genuinely unfixable (10 findings / 8 advisories) — every other path stays gated:

Advisory Package Why it cannot be fixed
CVE-2026-18140 aws-smithy-json fix needs rustc ≥ 1.91; also pinned by smithy-rs generated code and by aws-config which rustyscript 0.12.3 (max published) caps via deno_tls: rustls =0.23.28
GHSA-82j2-j2ch-gfr8 rustls-webpki 0.101/0.102 no patched release on those branches; upgrade path blocked by rustyscript 0.12.3 pins
GHSA-3v94-mw7p-v465 hickory-proto no fix published (advisory open)
GHSA-5j98-2g5x-46v6 hickory-resolver fix 0.26.2 is unreachable from deno_fetch (^0.25.0-alpha)
GHSA-h5x4-m2qf-r4f2 diesel 2.2.12 SQLite-backend-only (deployment is Postgres); upgrade blocked by juspay_diesel 2.3.1 (diesel_derives ~2.2.0) vs casbin diesel-adapter git pin
CVE-2026-85393 node-forge no fix published (latest 1.4.0 still affected)
CVE-2026-93687 braces no fix published (latest 3.0.3 still affected)
CVE-2026-73231 @faker-js/faker 5.5.3 fix needs v10, but postman-collection uses the v5 API removed in v6+; forcing v10 breaks the docs build (verified)

Each ignore entry expires 2027-01-31 so Trivy re-surfaces them for re-evaluation.

Image base migration (previously a follow-up — done in this PR)

  • Runtime base ubuntu:25.10 (EOL) → ubuntu:26.04 (LTS) in Dockerfile.
  • Demo database postgresql-17 → postgresql-18 in example.Dockerfile, with pg_hba.conf moved to /etc/postgresql/18/main/. superposition_demo.sh is version-agnostic (no change needed).
  • Removed /usr/bin/pebble from the runtime image: Ubuntu 26.04 base images ship this unused service manager with 3 unpatched golang-stdlib HIGH CVEs (CVE-2026-78667, CVE-2026-78669, CVE-2026-97031).
  • Dropped postgresql-server-dev-18 from the demo image: it exists only to compile C extensions (the demo never does — db_init.sql needs just uuid-ossp, shipped inside postgresql-18) and drags in linux-libc-dev/clang (~2 GB) carrying ~280 CRITICAL/HIGH kernel-header CVEs with no fix published in the archive.

CI: Trivy gate on every PR (.github/workflows/trivy.yaml)

Runs on anton1 for every PR to main and fails the build on any CRITICAL/HIGH vulnerability that is not in the documented accept list:

  1. trivy fs — repository dependencies (Cargo.lock, all package-lock.json/bun.lock/uv.lock, requirements.txt)
  2. trivy image scan of the superposition image — built only when Dockerfile changes in the PR; otherwise ghcr.io/juspay/superposition:latest is pulled and scanned instead of building
  3. trivy image scan of the superposition-demo image — built when example.Dockerfile or Dockerfile (its base) change; otherwise ghcr.io/juspay/superposition-demo:latest is pulled and scanned instead. When built, it sits on top of the PR's superposition image via the SUPERPOSITION_BASE build arg in example.Dockerfile (release default unchanged)

Verification performed

  • cargo check --features ssr on the updated Cargo.lock; cargo check for examples/k8s-staggered-releaser
  • npm ci + npm run build for docs, npm ci for tooling/lsp/vscode-extension, bun install for tests
  • glibc compatibility of the shipped binary on Ubuntu 26.04 (ldd fully resolves, binary reaches application code)
  • Docker builds of both images and Trivy scans: 0 CRITICAL/HIGH (with .trivyignore.yaml)
  • End-to-end demo boot on PostgreSQL 18: cluster starts, db_init.sql loads completely (incl. uuid-ossp extension), /health returns 200

Follow-up recommendations (not blocking)

  • When rustyscript publishes a release beyond 0.12.3 or the Rust toolchain moves past 1.90, re-run cargo update and drop the corresponding .trivyignore.yaml entries. Similarly for node-forge, braces, hickory-proto once fixes are published, and for the clients/* pins once the smithy codegen dependency configuration is upgraded.

Rust: aws-lc-sys 0.30.0 -> 0.41.0 (signature validation), quinn-proto
0.11.14 -> 0.11.19 (remote memory exhaustion), rustls-webpki 0.103.4 ->
0.103.13 and 0.102.8 -> 0.103.16 (malformed-CRL panic DoS), AWS SDK stack
(aws-config, aws-smithy-*, aws-sdk-sso/sts, aws-sigv4) updated as far as
the pinned rustyscript/deno stack allows, aws-smithy-xml held at 0.60.13
(0.60.14+ requires rustc 1.91, repo pins 1.90).

npm: fast-xml-parser (XSS/DoS), shell-quote (command execution), tinypool
(prototype pollution RCE), proxy-addr (IP spoofing), websocket-driver,
minimatch, brace-expansion, js-yaml, lodash, postcss, nanoid, browserslist,
svgo, immutable, serialize-javascript, webpack-dev-middleware,
follow-redirects, fast-uri, image-size, glob, joi, compression,
source-map-js, launch-editor, http-cache-semantics and others across docs,
clients/javascript, tooling/lsp/vscode-extension and tests (bun.lock).
Exact-pinned transitive versions are forced via npm/bun overrides.

Python: aiohttp 3.13.x -> 3.14.5 (uv.lock), certifi 2024.8.30 -> 2026.10.19
(emSign root CA trust), urllib3 2.7.0 -> 2.8.0 (locust/requirements.txt).

Verified with cargo check --features ssr, npm ci + builds for docs and
clients/javascript, bun install, and uv lock re-resolution.
Add .github/workflows/trivy.yaml: runs on every PR to main (anton1) and
fails on any CRITICAL/HIGH vulnerability that is not in the documented
accept list. It scans repository dependencies (trivy fs) and then builds
and scans both the superposition and superposition-demo Docker images.

.trivyignore.yaml documents the eight advisories that are currently
unfixable (no published fix, or blocked by rustyscript 0.12.3 / deno
pins, smithy-rs generated code, juspay_diesel 2.3.1, or postman-collection
API pins), each with a statement and a 2027-01-31 expiry so Trivy
re-surfaces them for re-evaluation.

example.Dockerfile gains a SUPERPOSITION_BASE build arg (default
unchanged) so CI can build the demo image on top of the PR's freshly
built superposition image instead of the published one.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b92e9

The vulnerability exceptions are meant to lapse on 2027-01-31 but will stay suppressed indefinitely. The CI job also runs an unpinned installer script. Fix the expiry key and pin the installer before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b92e9

The new scans improve vulnerability detection, but their effectiveness depends on an exception policy whose dates are not enforced and an installer fetched from a mutable upstream branch. The workflow grants only read access, and equivalent pull-request code execution already existed. Runner isolation and cleanup guarantees remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: The new gate's time-bounded acceptance policy is not enforced: all eight exceptions use expires, which the configured Trivy version ignores. Matching findings therefore remain suppressed after their stated review dates unless the configuration is changed manually. This introduces persistent control drift, not proof that the underlying vulnerabilities were introduced by this PR.
  • Medium · security · observed: The new security gate executes an installer fetched from upstream main directly on the runner. Control of that mutable script can change runner-side execution and undermine subsequent scans without changing the pinned Trivy version or this repository. Read-only repository permissions limit the declared token authority, but do not authenticate the installer content.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is the scanning job, its repository-read token, and build state accessible within its runner environment. Installer compromise can affect subsequent scan integrity and job execution. No newly granted repository-write, production-deployment, tenant-data, or organization-wide authority is established; broader runner access remains unknown.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied version-specific verification establishes that expires is not consumed by Trivy v0.76.0. Repeated scans therefore continue suppressing matching exceptions after the written dates; manual removal or corrected configuration is needed to restore automatic reassessment.
  • observed — The new installer path takes executable content from upstream main into a shell before scanning. The v0.76.0 argument selects the requested scanner release, not the revision of the installer being executed.
  • observed — The retained credential finding has a concrete path: default checkout credential persistence, a build context that does not exclude .git, COPY of that context, and repository-controlled npm or Cargo execution in the builder. Existing base-revision PR CI already executed repository-controlled commands with the same read-only checkout authority, so this is an additional credential-bearing build path, not a newly granted token capability.
  • observed — The retained mutable-checkout finding applies to actions/checkout@v4. That dependency pattern and equivalent read-only PR execution already existed in the base workflow; the evidence does not establish a newly increased permission ceiling from this tag reference.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The workflow uses pull_request rather than pull_request_target and declares only contents: read. These controls limit the declared repository-token authority, but do not prevent build code from reading credentials copied into its context or authenticate mutable upstream executable dependencies.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Normal checkout post-job cleanup cannot retract a credential already read by build code or remove copies in Docker builder state. Because the workflow has no explicit Docker cleanup, failure and cancellation containment depend on runner-level guarantees that were not available for this review.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use the configured Trivy version's supported expiration field and validate that a deliberately expired exception resurfaces. Treat exception renewal as an explicit security-policy change.
  • proposed — Pin executable CI dependencies to immutable revisions or verified release content, including the installer itself rather than only its requested scanner version.
  • proposed — Disable persisted checkout credentials when unnecessary, exclude Git metadata from Docker contexts, and establish job-isolated Docker state or dependable teardown across success, failure, cancellation, and retries.

Pin actions/checkout to an immutable commit SHA.

actions/checkout@v4 uses a mutable tag. Replace it with a reviewed full commit SHA so a retargeted tag cannot change the action code executed with this job’s runner access and token.

Do not copy checkout credentials into the Docker build context.

The workflow runs docker build . on pull requests. The root Dockerfile copies the context before npm ci, and .dockerignore does not exclude .git. A pull-request-controlled npm lifecycle script can therefore read the persisted checkout token from .git/config and transmit it. contents: read limits the token's permissions but does not prevent disclosure. Set persist-credentials: false and exclude .git from the Docker context.

Pin the script that installs Trivy.

The command executes install.sh from main on the CI runner. The v0.76.0 argument fixes the requested Trivy binary version, not the script being executed. If an attacker retargets or compromises that upstream branch, the next pull-request scan executes the substituted script. Fetch a reviewed script revision by commit SHA and verify its contents before execution. (github.com)

Review comment at @.github/workflows/trivy.yaml at line 25:
Update the Trivy installation command near the install.sh invocation to fetch
the reviewed script from a fixed aquasecurity/trivy commit SHA rather than the
mutable main branch, and verify the downloaded script contents before executing
it. Keep the requested binary version v0.76.0 and existing installation
directory unchanged.

Use Trivy’s expiration field for every exception.

Trivy v0.76.0 reads expired_at, not expires. It discards the expires value and treats an entry without expired_at as permanently valid. All eight exceptions therefore remain suppressed after January 31, 2027. Replace each expires key with expired_at. (github.com)

Replace every expires key in the Trivy ignore configuration with expired_at,
including all eight exception entries, while preserving their existing date
values.

The clients/* tree is produced by the smithy codegen pipeline; its
dependency pins are owned by the codegen configuration and hand-edits to
the generated lockfiles and manifests are overwritten on regeneration.
Revert the clients/* dependency updates and document the resulting
advisories as accepted in .trivyignore.yaml (scoped to clients/**,
expiring 2027-01-31).
- runtime base ubuntu:25.10 (EOL) -> ubuntu:26.04 LTS
- demo database postgresql-17 -> postgresql-18 (pg_hba.conf path updated)
- drop postgresql-server-dev from the demo image: it is only needed to
  compile C extensions (unused; db_init.sql needs only uuid-ossp, shipped
  in postgresql-18) and drags in linux-libc-dev/clang carrying ~280
  unfixed kernel CVEs
- remove /usr/bin/pebble from the runtime image: an unused service
  manager shipped by the ubuntu base with unpatched golang stdlib CVEs

Verified end to end: demo boots on postgresql-18 (db_init.sql incl.
uuid-ossp, /health 200) and both images scan 0 CRITICAL/HIGH with trivy.
serialize-javascript 7.x (required for its RCE/DoS security fixes) calls
crypto.getRandomValues at module load, which the runner's default
Node 18 runtime does not provide; `make smithy-api-docs` crashed with
ReferenceError: crypto is not defined. Pin Node 24 via actions/setup-node
like the sibling Provider Tests job (Node 18 is EOL since 2025-04).

Verified: `npm run openapi-docs` exits 0 on Node 24 and regenerates
docs/docs/api byte-identically to the committed files.
The image builds dominate this workflow's runtime. Each image is now
built only when the Dockerfiles that define it change in the PR:

- superposition: Dockerfile
- superposition-demo: example.Dockerfile (or Dockerfile, its base)

Otherwise the published ghcr.io/juspay/superposition[-demo]:latest
images are pulled and scanned by the same CRITICAL/HIGH gate, so
dependency-only PRs keep image coverage without paying for a build.
