Problem

Resolve calls report the variant IDs from get_applicable_variants, which is every variant the user is bucketed into. When experiments or contexts overlap, some of those variants lose every key to a later (higher-weight) context and never reach the resolved config. Analytics then credits users to variants they never saw.

Separately, POST /experiments/applicable-variants ignored the identifier query param that the SDK sends, so SDK callers always got an empty list.

Solution

  • Provider: new resolve_all_features_details and resolve_all_features_with_filter_details, which return AllFeaturesResolutionDetails { value, variant_ids }. variant_ids lists only the variants that actually applied.
  • Applied variant: a variant whose context is the last writer of at least one resolved key. Resolution itself still uses get_applicable_variants.
  • Core: eval_with_key_sources returns the config and the winning context for each key in a single pass. eval_with_applied_variants is built on it. Plain eval is unchanged and does no tracking.
  • Local provider: details use eval_with_applied_variants. Variants are only computed when a targeting key is present; otherwise a caller-supplied variantIds is kept. variantIds can be passed as a struct field (Value or Vec<String>). Evaluation uses REPLACE.
  • Remote provider: details call /experiments/applicable-variants, then /config/resolve/detailed, and read variantIds from each key's winning context.
  • Server:
    • /config/resolve/detailed uses eval_with_key_sources. This removes the second pass (resolve_key_sources).
    • /config/resolve uses core's eval_config instead of the duplicate cac_client::eval_cac. context_aware_config no longer depends on cac_client.
    • POST /experiments/applicable-variants reads identifier from the body, falling back to the query param.

Tested with new core unit tests, and the provider integration test passes for both local and remote providers against a local server.

API changes

Endpoint Method Request body Response Body
/experiments/applicable-variants POST identifier is now optional in the body; ?identifier= is used when it's absent Unchanged
/config/resolve, /config/resolve/detailed GET/POST Unchanged Unchanged (same evaluation logic, now from superposition_core)

Rust provider API: AllFeatureProvider::resolve_all_features_details(context) and resolve_all_features_with_filter_details(context, prefix, exclude_prefix) return AllFeaturesResolutionDetails { value, variant_ids }.

Possible Issues in the future

  • resolve_all_features_with_filter_details is a required trait method, so any external AllFeatureProvider implementation has to add it.
  • The local provider resolves with REPLACE. The remote provider sends no x-merge-strategy, so the server default MERGE applies. Object-valued keys set by more than one context can resolve differently between local and remote until MERGE is removed.
  • Remote details make two calls, and /config/resolve/detailed also loads key metadata, so it is slower than plain resolve. It could be a single call if /config/resolve/detailed accepted identifier, which needs a smithy and SDK change.
  • Pre-existing and not fixed here: the server buckets with hash(identifier, group_id as i64), while core and the local provider hash group_id as a string. The same user can land in different variants on local and remote. Fixing it moves users between variants mid-experiment, so it needs a decision.
  • Only the Rust provider gets the details functions. The other language providers are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Detailed configuration resolution now includes the experiment variants that contributed to the returned values, with support for filtered results.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Applicable-variant requests can provide the targeting identifier in the request body or query, and can omit it.
    • Evaluation contexts now correctly handle JSON values and lists of strings.
    • Variant reporting excludes variants that did not affect the resolved configuration.

Walkthrough

Core evaluation now tracks key sources and applied variant IDs. Local and remote providers expose detailed resolution results containing values and variant IDs. Applicable-variant request handling and provider tests are updated.

Shared evaluation tracks the context that last wrote each resolved default key. A new API returns variant IDs associated with contexts that supplied surviving keys. Config resolution uses the source-aware evaluator instead of a separate source scan.
Provider details contract and context conversion
crates/superposition_provider/src/types.rs, crates/superposition_provider/src/traits.rs, crates/superposition_provider/src/conversions.rs
The provider interface adds detailed resolution methods and a result type containing values and variant IDs. Evaluation-context conversion handles Value and Vec<String> fields.

Local and remote providers return detailed resolution results. Remote resolution obtains applicable variants when a targeting identifier is available. Applicable-variant requests accept an optional identifier, and integration tests cover both providers.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b597f

Existing local callers can lose fields from object-valued configuration, and remote callers supplying variant IDs without a targeting key can lose those assignments. Restore the local merge behavior and fix remote conversion before merging.

Keep MERGE for plain local resolution.

resolve_all_features and typed accessors use the plain local path without a merge-strategy option. REPLACE can discard sibling fields from an object-valued default when an override contains only part of that object. Restore MERGE on this track_variants == false path.

Serialize caller-supplied variantIds for remote details.

Without a targeting key, variantIds can be stored as Value or Vec<String> inside the Arc wrapper of EvaluationContextFieldValue::Struct. The remote conversion handles only HashMap<String, EvaluationContextFieldValue>, so these values become Document::Object({}). The remote details path accepts IDs only from Document::Array, so the caller-supplied IDs are omitted.

Add the same conversions used by evaluation_context_to_value. The downcasts must target Value and Vec<String>, not Arc<Value> or Arc<Vec<String>>.
