Overview

Same harmless race as #848, in the container-profile manager and cache: containers exiting before registration (e.g. CNPG init) logged 3 ERROR lines.

The container's remove event now cancels its in-flight registration (utils.PendingAdds). Only a registration aborted this way logs at Debug. Timeouts for live containers and other failures stay at Error, since missing shared data alone does not prove removal.

Side effects: no 10-minute polling goroutine per short-lived container, and removals no longer wait behind a stuck registration (namespace-filter queue, deleteContainer ready wait).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Removing a container now cancels its pending registration, including while it is waiting in the processing queue.
    • Once shared container data is available, removal no longer interrupts profile fetching, allowing the profile to become available during the removal grace period.
    • Timed-out or failed registrations are distinguished from registrations interrupted by removal, improving failure reporting and ensuring failed entries can be retried.

Same harmless race as kubescape#848, in the container-profile cache and manager.
Containers exiting before registration (e.g. CNPG init) logged 3 ERROR lines.
Now Debug when no shared data exists; Error kept otherwise.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The lifecycle manager and object cache track pending container additions by container ID. Removal cancels matching additions. After shared container data is available, the object cache preserves profile fetching while retaining the add deadline.

Changes

Pending container-add cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track and cancel pending additions
pkg/utils/pending_adds.go, pkg/utils/pending_adds_test.go
PendingAdds tracks contexts by key, cancels current registrations with ErrContainerRemoved, and identifies removal-related failures. Tests cover cancellation, release, readmission, and cancellation causes.
Cancel lifecycle registrations safely
pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/containerprofile_manager.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/container_operations.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/container_operations_test.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/lifecycle.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/lifecycle_host_timer_test.go, pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/lifecycle_removal_test.go
The lifecycle manager passes tracked contexts to registration and cancels additions on removal. Failed or skipped attempts abandon their owned entry. Tests cover removal timing, entry cleanup, and failure classification.
Preserve profile fetching after shared data
pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/containerprofilecache.go, pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/removal_abort_test.go
The object cache cancels additions during shared-data waiting, then uses a context that retains the deadline but ignores removal cancellation for profile fetching. Tests cover both phases.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0fb3e

A profile lookup failure can produce a Debug-level outer summary when it races with removal, although its specific error remains visible at Error. This is a narrow logging inconsistency; the change is otherwise mergeable with a focused follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b29eb

Cancellation reduces wasted work for short-lived containers and improves failure classification. However, removal can race with successful registration and discard the tracking entry without stopping its monitor. This can leave background work running and prevent proper profile finalization. No new cross-namespace access or privilege escalation was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A removal can cancel registration after shared data is ready and monitoring has started. The wrapper may then remove the tracking entry before deletion observes it, without stopping the monitor. Deletion and maximum-time cleanup subsequently cannot find the entry, while periodic save failures leave the monitor running. This newly removal-triggered race breaks termination ownership and profile finalization, with potential resource accumulation in the shared monitoring process.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Cancellation targets registrations for one runtime container ID, not every container or namespace. A leaked monitor consumes resources in the shared monitoring process, however, so repeated affected lifecycle transitions could have wider availability consequences. Cross-node, cross-tenant, or storage-wide compromise was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported risk path is lifecycle timing: a workload exit generates removal while registration is publishing monitoring state, cancellation removes the entry, and later cleanup cannot terminate the monitor. Deliberate exploitation would require influencing affected workload lifetimes and repeatedly reaching this race; reliable exploitation and downstream rule bypass were not demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The changed ingress remains a container lifecycle callback. Runtime container IDs select cancellation and metadata lookup; existing namespace filtering and host namespace normalization remain in the inspected paths. Removal deliberately bypasses current ignore filtering so previously admitted state can be cleaned up.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The tracker isolates registrations by key and object identity, so an old release cannot remove a newer registration. Cache removal also has an independent lock-protected cleanup path. These controls limit ordinary cancellation races but do not terminate manager monitors whose map entries have already been discarded.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make cancellation and registration publication share an explicit ownership transition: retain cleanup ownership until the worker settles, and terminate any monitor already created before discarding its entry. Bind worker cleanup to the initiating entry or generation, and validate cancellation immediately before and after publication with controlled interleavings.

Request changes — one P2 logging regression remains in the existing shared-data classification thread; no duplicate inline comment added.

Reviewed a4ca27d7dbee32f8bb5a054759867c9f7a2f4060 against main at 44c4cb2951d5de2ce09231920d9b21c61329eaca.

P2: preserve Error for live or unknown containers. pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/lifecycle.go:132 and pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache/containerprofilecache.go:310 treat absent metadata as proof of exit. The cache's inner diagnostic at line 327 is also unconditionally Debug. Concrete counterexample: a running container's Kubernetes metadata lookup recovers at minute 11. Both consumers have already exhausted their 10-minute waits; the producer is still within its 15-minute retry budget and eventually succeeds, without its terminal Error. Registration has failed, but this PR hides the consumer diagnostics from normal log collection. The registration loss predates this PR; the lost error visibility is new. The metadata cache only represents Set/Get/Delete, not container liveness (k8scache.go:84–98; producer containercallback.go:135–166). Downgrade only with positive removal evidence, retaining Error for live/unknown state, and cover removed, live-with-missing-data, and metadata-present failure cases in both paths.

Reducing false errors for exited containers is worthwhile: the target branch still logs these paths at Error. #848 documents the race, but explicitly cautions that missing data can also mean a stuck live-container pipeline; the maintainer's harmlessness rationale concerns SBOM image retrieval. Merged #859 addressed #850 in the SBOM manager, including removal cancellation and logging, and does not supersede these profile paths. Its earlier timeout/cancellation/test objections were addressed before approval. Related closed #982 was deferred (“may reopen”), not an explicit rejection of this logging approach. No duplicate or superseding profile-logging fix found in all-state GitHub PR/issue searches using shared-data/shared data, short-lived, registration timeout, CNPG, containerprofilecache, containerprofilemanager, and addContainerWithTimeout; each query capped at 100, so this is not exhaustive.

Validation: git diff --check and formatting checks passed. In a credential-free, capability-restricted Go 1.27.1 container, CGO_ENABLED=0 go test -mod=readonly -count=1 -timeout=90s ./pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1 ./pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache -run 'TestAddContainerWithTimeout_StaleFailureCleanupDoesNotDeleteNewerEntry|Test_waitForSharedContainerData_Host' passed both packages. This compiles the affected packages and runs default vet checks, but does not test logging classification. No tests changed; no before/after severity regression or live-cluster reproduction was run. Full build/lint/race suites were not run. DCO, GitGuardian and CodeRabbit checks succeeded; build/test workflow, component tests and benchmark report action_required, not passing validation. The build/test run has zero executed jobs. No new dependency/API/configuration change or additional blocker found. Independent code and architecture reviews concur on this finding.

Missing shared data does not prove a container exited: its producer may
still be retrying for a live container. The remove event now cancels the
in-flight registration, and only that cancellation downgrades the log to
Debug. Timeouts and other failures stay at Error.

@matthyx Agreed: missing shared data does not prove removal.
Fixed in b29eb02.

  • The remove event now cancels the in-flight registration (utils.PendingAdds).
  • Only that cancellation logs at Debug.
    • Timeouts and other failures stay at Error.
  • Tests cover: removed during the wait, live container at the deadline, and failure with shared data present.
  • Bonus: no 10-minute polling goroutine per short-lived container.

Bind worker cleanup to the original ContainerEntry.

Removal now lets the outer cancellation branch remove the entry before addContainer finishes. Cancellation does not wait for the worker to stop. (pkg.go.dev)

If the canceled worker pauses after the shared-data wait returns an error, a readmitted add can install a new entry. This lookup then selects the new entry, closes its ready channel, and removes it. The outer branch's entry-match check does not protect this cleanup.

Pass the original entry into addContainer. Close and remove only that entry on failure.

Synchronize on entry to the shared-data wait.

ContainerCallback starts registration asynchronously. The lock probe can acquire containerLocks before registration acquires it, so the test can pass even if cancellation no longer interrupts waitForSharedContainerData. PendingAdds.Cancel removes the tracked registration before invoking its cancel function, so pendingAdds.Len("short-lived") == 0 does not prove that registration completed.

Use a K8sObjectCache stub whose GetSharedContainerData signals when registration enters the wait while holding the lock. Send the remove event after that signal, then verify that the lock becomes available. The production path passes the tracked context into backoff.Retry; this is a test-coverage gap.

Cancellation closed entry.ready while addContainer still ran, so a
deletion could send on a nil SyncChannel and deadlock. Run addContainer
inline instead; it only blocks in the ctx-bound shared-data wait.

Failure cleanup now targets the attempt's own entry and untracks it
before closing ready, so a replayed add cannot skip registration.

Re-reviewed 22a1e6253f6515ba35a90756c57f02430b9fbe44 against main at 44c4cb2951d5de2ce09231920d9b21c61329eaca. Request changes for one new P2 regression, detailed inline.

The prior logging blocker is resolved: explicit removal cancellation replaces the missing-metadata heuristic, retaining Error for live deadlines and other failures. The intermediate readiness/entry-ownership concerns are also resolved by inline manager registration and cleanup bound to its original entry. Both existing inline threads are resolved; I am not repeating those findings.

The remaining problem is cancellation reaching the cache's initial storage fetch after metadata is available. A short-lived container can consequently lose its available profile during the terminal-event grace window. Independent code and architecture reviews agree.

Validation in a credential-free, capability-restricted Go 1.27.1 container: go test -mod=readonly -race -count=1 -timeout=120s ./pkg/utils ./pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1 ./pkg/objectcache/containerprofilecache -run 'TestPendingAdds|TestRemovedDuringAdd|Test.*Removal|TestAddContainer_FailureClassification|TestAbandonEntry|TestAddContainerWithTimeout_StaleFailureCleanupDoesNotDeleteNewerEntry|TestContainerCallback_Replay' passed all three packages. A separate synchronized test pauses an initial available-profile GET, delivers removal, releases the response, waits for registration to settle, and asserts profile availability during grace: passes on the target commit, fails on this PR head, both with -race. Diff/format checks passed. These are targeted checks, not the complete test/build/lint suite or a live-cluster test.

DCO and GitGuardian succeeded; CodeRabbit status succeeds but its latest full review was rate-limited. Build/test, component and benchmark workflows remain action_required. Prior related history/search conclusions remain applicable: #848/#850 and merged #859 concern the analogous SBOM path, not this cache-grace regression; #982 was deferred rather than rejected. Additional all-state PendingAdds and removal/grace PR searches found no superseding fix (100-result cap per query; not exhaustive). No new dependencies or additional blocker found.

[P2] Keep initial profile retrieval alive through the terminal-event grace period.

This removal-cancelled parent now reaches tryPopulateEntry and its storage GETs, not just the missing-metadata wait. If an init container exits while its available profile response is in flight, Cancel aborts that GET and registration publishes only a pending entry. Queued terminal events then cannot resolve their required profile (rule_manager.go:332–334 suppresses them as profile_incomplete). Default reconciliation is 30s, while removal deletes pending state after 10s.

I reproduced this with metadata already populated, a synchronized delayed successful profile GET, and removal before the response: the profile-availability assertion passes on main 44c4cb2 and fails on head 22a1e62, with the race detector. Existing grace tests seed an already-loaded entry, so they do not catch this case.

Limit removal cancellation to waiting for shared metadata, then allow subsequent profile retrieval to finish with a separately bounded context during grace. Add this interleaving as regression coverage.

Agreed. Removal now cancels only the shared-data wait; profile GETs keep the 10-minute deadline but ignore removal, so they complete during grace.

Added your interleaving as TestContainerCallback_RemovalKeepsProfileFetch (fails on 22a1e62). Fixed in b4378f2.

Removal now cancels only the shared-data wait. Profile GETs keep the
10-minute deadline, so terminal events still resolve the profile
during the removal grace period.

Condition the final removal on the entry selected by the deletion

An unfiltered removal cancels the current add without waiting for it to abandon entry A, then starts deleteContainer. If a later add installs entry B for the same container ID, the deletion still holds A but cpm.removeContainerEntry(containerID) removes B from the map. This can leave the readmitted container unregistered. The new unfiltered cancellation makes this race reachable during normal remove/readmit activity.

@mloiseleur Thanks for the clarification. Verified in 0fb3e118: deleteContainerWithReason now uses removeContainerEntryIfMatch(containerID, entry). This prevents cleanup of an older entry from deleting a newer entry for the same container ID.

The issue predates this PR, as you explained. This finding is addressed.

Learning: In kubescape/node-agent, the Go ContainerProfileManager cleanup paths tied to a specific ContainerEntry must use removeContainerEntryIfMatch(containerID, entry) rather than unconditional removeContainerEntry(containerID). This prevents cleanup of an older entry from deleting a newer registration for the same container ID. In pkg/containerprofilemanager/v1/lifecycle.go, deleteContainerWithReason follows this rule.

Do not classify post-wait errors as removal cancellations.

addContainer continues after removal by using withoutRemoval(ctx). If GetSlug then returns an error, the outer addContainerWithTimeout passes that independent error to AddFailureLogger with the original context. ErrContainerRemoved therefore causes the outer log to use Debug. The slug path also emits an Error log, but the outer classification is still incorrect and can mislead Debug-based log filtering.

Pass the operation error to AddFailureLogger and require context.Canceled before selecting Debug.

Rechecked head 0fb3e118787d24d792272c3f9f992987e84dae26. The previous P2 profile-fetch blocker is resolved: removal cancels the shared-metadata wait, while subsequent profile GETs retain the original absolute deadline and can finish during terminal-event grace. Conditional manager deletion also preserves a replacement entry. No new production blocker found in the changes since 22a1e625.

Nonblocking test concern: removal_abort_test.go's delayed client immediately releases the response after removal. With the old implementation, both channels can be ready and the fake can select success because its embedded client ignores cancellation. Checking ctx.Err() in the release branch would make the regression assertion more reliable; a deadline case would also protect the bounded-fetch contract. This is not a newly discovered production defect.

Validation: targeted PendingAdds, removal, classification, entry cleanup and replay tests passed with -race -count=1 in all three affected packages, in a credential-free Go 1.27.1 container with capabilities dropped. The new profile-fetch test was included. PR diff/format checks passed. Full build/lint/tests and live-cluster validation were not run.

Related history remains #848/#850 and merged #859 for the analogous SBOM path; #982 was deferred, not rejected. Fresh all-state PendingAdds and removal/grace searches found no superseding fix (100-result cap per query). Current main is 71818df6; #994/#1003/#1005/#1006/#1017 include later changes in these packages. A merge-tree check succeeds without conflicts, but the integrated tree was not tested. The PR API still reports base 44c4cb29.

Verdict: needs clarification/validation before approval. The prior code blocker is fixed, but build/test, component and benchmark workflows remain action_required, and validation against current main remains outstanding. DCO, GitGuardian and CodeRabbit succeed. Please obtain those validation results before treating this as ready to merge. Immediately before this review, the PR remained open, non-draft, with unchanged head and current main; no new author response or duplicate finding appeared. No source branch or repository settings were changed.

Approved head 0fb3e118787d24d792272c3f9f992987e84dae26, targeting main at 71818df6be721164d76daa67093d918c88e8c0c4.

The explicit removal signal fixes noisy short-lived-container registration failures without treating absent metadata as proof of exit. The previous P2 profile-fetch blocker is resolved: only the metadata wait is removal-cancelled, while profile retrieval retains its deadline and can complete during terminal-event grace. Conditional entry deletion protects readmission. No material blocker remains; the delayed-fake test reliability suggestion in my preceding review remains nonblocking.

Verified all 39 reported checks are successful, including unit/build, component tests, benchmark, DCO, GitGuardian and CodeRabbit. The unit/build job checked out merge 88a991e: this exact head into current main 71818df6, and ran the non-e2e unit suite. Component tests and benchmark also succeeded. This closes the CI and integration gaps from my preceding review. Earlier isolated targeted race tests passed in all three affected packages; I did not rerun them or claim a full local race/lint suite.

Related history/search conclusions remain as recorded in the preceding reviews: #848/#850/#859 concern the analogous SBOM path; #982 was deferred, not rejected, and bounded all-state searches found no superseding fix. Immediately before approval, the PR remained open, non-draft and conflict-free, with unchanged head and current main and no new unresolved production finding. No merge or source/settings changes performed.
