Summary

Follows #6802 (merged as 01acdc8), which taught the CLI to recognize a runtime that OpenCodex Desktop spawned and supervises. This PR stops the CLI from competing with that runtime. Before it, an updated CLI on a Mac whose Desktop app runs the proxy would still:

  • ocx service install / repair / start / restart: register and start a second supervisor next to the app;
  • ocx update (npm/pnpm launcher or Bun updater): stop the app's proxy, replace a package the app does not run from, and refresh a service;
  • ocx start: say "Use 'ocx stop' first", and ocx stop: stop a proxy the app restarts a few seconds later, with no explanation.

Now each of these checks the live supervision evidence from #6802 through one latch per operation. The operation is blocked when the evidence says desktop, or unknown after a read saw the Desktop parent; only a later positive none clears it. Inconclusive or unsupported (Windows) evidence keeps today's behavior, so a failed ps cannot strand npm users.

  • Service: activating verbs refuse before any mutation, including Windows registration staging, and re-check after asynchronous waits. The message reads: "OpenCodex Desktop supervises the running proxy (pid …, …). Quit OpenCodex, then rerun 'ocx service install' to move startup management to this CLI."
  • Update: the Node launcher and the Bun updater refuse at the initial plan and immediately before the stop. The Bun side targets the trusted live pid; the Node side uses the inspector's own pid-file/runtime-port correlation. Replacement, recovery, refresh and the dashboard restart veto share the same latch. Notice: "OpenCodex Desktop runs this proxy from its own bundle; use the app's updater (tray → Check for Updates). This npm/Bun install was left unchanged; quit OpenCodex first to update it."
  • Start/stop/restart: the duplicate-start message names the Desktop supervisor. ocx stop keeps working, because Desktop's own runtime_stop.rs calls stop --json; it prints "OpenCodex Desktop may start this proxy again after a short backoff. Use Stop Proxy or Quit in the OpenCodex menu to keep it stopped." on stderr, never under --json, with exit codes unchanged. Restart reports that Desktop starts the replacement. Its fallback is bound to the restart target pid, so an unrelated Desktop pid never blocks it.
  • These are early warnings run by the CLI, and do not enforce anything. An older CLI on PATH never runs them; the limits are recorded in structure/desktop-shell.md.

Plan, audits and the bypass ledger: devlog/_plan/261009_L1-desktop-cli/020, 021, 003.

Verification

  • Union of worker files plus the fix(cli): treat a Desktop-supervised runtime as the authority in status, doctor and resolve #6802 regression set (20 files, isolated OPENCODEX_HOME/CODEX_HOME): 635 pass / 2 skip / 1 fail. The failure was a source-oracle assertion in tests/cli/cli-dispatch.test.ts that pinned the old refusal literal inside chooseListenPort; it now asserts the call into the guidance leaf and the literal there (73/73 pass).
  • bun run typecheck, bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts (src/cli/index.ts net 0, src/update/job.ts untouched), bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, docs-site build: pass. Node import proof: node bin/ocx.mjs update --help exit 0, plus a node -e test of the latch and inspector.
  • Combined tree with fix(launcher): fall back to a validated PATH Bun and warn on lifecycle version skew #6807 (launcher fallback) merged in a scratch branch: typecheck + 326 overlapping tests pass. The only overlap is both PRs appending a describe block to tests/cli/ocx-launcher-runtime.test.ts, so whichever lands second keeps both blocks.
  • No live ocx service/update/stop was run against the reporting Mac's real Desktop runtime; unit tests with injected evidence carry that proof. Full bun run test, Node 18 and native Windows are left to CI.
  • Independent gpt-6.1-sol review: PASS.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CLI updates, runtime recovery, and service install, repair, start, or restart now stop when OpenCodex Desktop is supervising the proxy, avoiding conflicting changes.
    • Restart requests can hand off proxy startup to Desktop. Regular ocx stop warns that Desktop may restart the proxy and explains how to keep it stopped; JSON output remains unchanged.
    • Supervision checks are repeated during operations, and an inconclusive check won’t clear a previously detected supervision block until supervision is confirmed absent.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Desktop and CLI guides to explain supervision-related command behavior, recovery options, and platform limitations.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CLI, service commands, and Bun and Node updaters now use latched Desktop supervision evidence when deciding whether to stop, replace, restore, or recover a proxy. The CLI reports supervision-specific guidance, and the documentation and tests cover these checks and their limits.

Changes

Desktop supervision

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update and recovery authorization
src/update/runtime-ownership.mjs, src/update/runtime-ownership.d.mts, src/update/index.ts, src/update/restart-ownership.ts, bin/ocx.mjs, tests/update/*, tests/cli/ocx-launcher-*, structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md, structure/runtime.md
Update planning accepts supervision evidence or a latch verdict. The Bun and Node launchers and dashboard restart paths recheck supervision before stopping, replacing packages, refreshing services, or recovering a proxy. Blocked actions skip CLI recovery or service restoration.
Service command and repair guards
src/service/desktop-command-guard.ts, src/service/cli.ts, src/service/orchestration.ts, src/service/repair.ts, tests/service/*, tests/server/startup-prompt.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/desktop-app.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/ko/guides/desktop-app.md, structure/desktop-shell.md
Service install, repair, start, and restart refuse when the supervision latch blocks them. Installation and repair paths recheck supervision before service and scheduler mutations. Tests and documentation cover these guards and their behavior when observations are inconclusive.
CLI proxy guidance and restart handling
src/cli/desktop-runtime-guidance.ts, src/cli/dispatch.ts, src/cli/index.ts, src/cli/update-restart.ts, tests/cli/cli-dispatch.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-restart-health.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-stop-json.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart.test.ts, structure/cli-management.md, structure/desktop-shell.md
Duplicate-proxy messages identify Desktop when supervision evidence matches the target. Ordinary ocx stop can print a Desktop notice; JSON stop skips the supervision probe. Restart handling reports accepted Desktop handoffs and avoids starting a competing CLI replacement for a supervised proxy.

The update succeeds and CLI recovery is skipped when Desktop takes over, but the warning does not tell users to use the app updater. This is a bounded guidance issue rather than a reason to block merging.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Source-order test is brittle but acceptable.

The test pins source text and indexOf order. A harmless rename of preStopPlan or a reformat breaks it without a behavior change. The runtime test in tests/cli/ocx-launcher-runtime.test.ts covers the Node import path only. It does not run the stop gate end to end.

If the indexOf calls return -1, the toBeGreaterThan assertions fail with unclear messages. This is a minor diagnostic issue. No change is required.

Use the planner notice for Desktop-supervised updates.

A successful update can reach this branch after Desktop takes over between the last pre-replacement check and the final post-install check. In that case, the generic warning explains what was skipped but omits the documented instruction to use the app updater.
