Summary

  • When Windows desktop compatibility refuses an unassessed Codex package, show the supported package version, the last observed package version, and when that observation completed. The observation is explicitly historical, including while the companion is stopped.
  • Expose only bounded public version metadata from completed probes. Aborted/in-flight probes preserve the prior observation, failed discovery clears its verdict, and status reads do not launch another package query. The supported-build guard and its assessed version remain unchanged; this PR does not enable compatibility for a new build or add subscription/WebSocket transport support.
  • Update the user guide, management API reference, and architecture notes.

Verification

  • Windows, pinned Bun 1.4.3: bun test tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-runtime.test.ts tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-build-probe.test.ts — 69 passed / 400 assertions. This includes stop/start replacement, routing failure before discovery, pending observations, newly completed failure/missing discovery, status snapshot isolation, cancellation during Apply, and guarded fixture probes. Root tsc --noEmit and structure checks also passed after the lifecycle follow-up.
  • GUI: bun test tests/desktop-compatibility-api.test.ts tests/desktop-compatibility-panel.test.tsx — 26 passed, including stale observation display while stopped and strict metadata projection.
  • Root TypeScript tsc --noEmit, GUI TypeScript tsc -b, GUI Vite build, and bun run lint:i18n passed. The oxlint script arguments also passed when invoked directly.
  • A headless Chromium render of the real component with synthetic API responses had no page errors or horizontal overflow. The screenshot below is fixture evidence, not a live compatibility or quota-exhaustion test.
  • bun scripts/structure-ssot.ts passed. The documentation bun run build completed with 577 pages and 81,200 internal links checked after a frozen-lockfile install.
  • The repository-wide suite was not run locally: this focused metadata change was checked with its direct regressions while independent worktrees were active. Cross-platform/release checks and broader coverage remain separate; inspect CI on this exact PR head before merge.

Synthetic Windows compatibility panel showing historical package observation

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The Windows desktop compatibility panel now shows the assessed package version, the last observed package version, and when the check completed.
    • When no matching package is detected, the panel shows that no package was observed. Assessment details describe a past check, not the current installed or verified status.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified when assessment details may be missing or outdated, how verification applies to the package observed at check completion, and that viewing runtime status does not trigger a new check.

📝 Walkthrough

The installed-build probe now records metadata for completed checks. Runtime status retains and exposes the latest assessment. The compatibility GUI validates and displays its assessed version, observed version, and completion time.

Changes: Build assessment status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record completed build assessments
src/codex/desktop-compatibility/installed-build.ts, tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-build-probe.test.ts
The probe records the assessed version, observed version, verification result, and completion time. It preserves the last result when a check is interrupted or the probe closes. Tests cover successful, failed, malformed, missing, and aborted checks.
Retain assessments across runtime starts
src/codex/desktop-compatibility/runtime.ts, tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-runtime.test.ts, structure/clients/codex-desktop.md
Runtime status includes the latest probe result or a retained prior result. Each start creates a fresh probe unless a build override exists. Tests cover probe replacement, failed and pending checks, cancellation, and test-only probe configuration. The runtime documentation describes the status lifecycle and package identity rules.
Validate and display assessment status
gui/src/desktop-compatibility-api.ts, gui/src/pages/codex-desktop-compatibility.tsx, gui/src/i18n/desktop-compatibility-copy.ts, gui/tests/desktop-compatibility-api.test.ts, gui/tests/desktop-compatibility-panel.test.tsx, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/management-api.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-integration.md
The GUI parser validates assessment versions, verification, and completion time. The panel displays assessed and observed versions, a localized fallback, and completion time. Tests cover valid and invalid data, absent results, and results shown after shutdown. The documentation describes the field as a past observation.

Reviewed c82a236 against current dev (7640a94, including #7107). The diagnostic-only design is correct: each authorization path still requests a fresh build check, while status reads retain only the last completed observation. The CodeRabbit probe-replacement finding is already fixed in c82a236 and its thread is resolved; no additional source change is needed from this review. Independent review also found no current-head defect.

Fresh local evidence in an isolated lane worktree, Bun 1.4.3:

  • bun test tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-runtime.test.ts tests/clients/desktop-compatibility-build-probe.test.ts: 69 pass, 0 fail, 400 assertions.
  • From gui/, bun test tests/desktop-compatibility-api.test.ts tests/desktop-compatibility-panel.test.tsx: 26 pass, 0 fail, 563 assertions.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, GUI bun run lint:i18n and bun run build, and docs-site bun run build: passed.
  • Changed-import coverage is running with one worker; ordinary queued invocation was stopped before test execution because several concurrent worktrees share the user lock. Intentional overlap uses the runner-supported OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1, retaining home isolation and guards. Full local-suite duplication is deferred due this contention; exact-head hosted coverage remains required.

The ordinary PR Ubuntu jobs are green. Cross-platform dispatch is on an identical in-repository mirror (ci/pr-7113-desktop-launch, same c82a236 SHA): https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/38697942341 . Linux/macOS/Windows results are pending, not passing evidence yet. No merge performed.

Changed-import validation completed successfully on unchanged PR head c82a236:

OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun run test:changed --parallel=1 — 8,339 pass / 32 skip / 0 fail / 58,937 assertions, 367 files, exit 0 (458 seconds). Existing opt-in/platform skips remain explicit; no tests were disabled or stubbed by this lane. The full local suite was not duplicated while multiple worktrees contend for resources.

This completes the local evidence listed above. Cross-platform workflow https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/38697942341 remains queued/in progress on the identical in-repo mirror; Windows/macOS completion is still required.
