fix(codex): protect the desktop authority key in-process on Windows x64 - #7181
Conversation
Every protect/unprotect spawned Windows PowerShell and loaded System.Security, which cost seconds of cold start and exceeded the 20s bound on a loaded Windows runner. Call CryptProtectData/CryptUnprotectData through bun:ffi instead, with crypt32 loaded from the GetSystemDirectoryW path. Windows ARM64 keeps the PowerShell helper. Blobs stay compatible in both directions.

cleanup try block after CryptUnprotectData succeeds, so conversion failures
still reach cleanup. Ensure LocalFree(address) runs in a finally block even if
clearing the view throws.

that wipes the buffer.

Summary
Codex Desktop compatibility authority lifecycle > real CurrentUser DPAPI survives separate helper invocations and rejects corruptionfailed onwindows 2/9in run 38699018462 withdesktop_compatibility_key_protection_failedafter 20.4s. It had also failed at the previous 10s bound in run 38591626343 (2 of the last 400 Cross-platform CI runs). #7107 widened that bound from 10s to 20s, and a loaded runner exceeded it again. The cost was never DPAPI itself. Every
protect/unprotectspawned a fresh Windows PowerShell and ranAdd-Type System.Securityto make a call that takes milliseconds. Users paid the same startup cost each time the authority key was created or loaded. On Windows x64,
windows-key-protection.tsnow callsCryptProtectData/CryptUnprotectDatain-process throughbun:ffi. No child process is spawned and no clock bounds the call.CRYPTPROTECT_UI_FORBIDDEN, noCRYPTPROTECT_LOCAL_MACHINE) with the same entropy bytes. This is whatProtectedData.Protect(..., CurrentUser)requests, so keys stored by earlier versions still open.crypt32.dllis loaded from theGetSystemDirectoryWpath (resolveTrustedWindowsSystemDirectory), so the DLL search order cannot substitute it.kernel32.dll(forLocalFree) is loaded from the same directory.LocalFreeon every exit path, including a rejected size. Errors carry only the existing fixed codes, and no secret reaches a command line, the environment or stderr.windows-user-principal.tsandwindows-installation-files.ts), keeps the existing trusted PowerShell helper and its 20s bound.-NoLogowas added to its arguments.structure/clients/codex-desktop.mdis updated to match.Security review: this touches credential/key handling, so it needs the explicit security review MAINTAINERS.md requires.

Independent review of the DPAPI FFI path against the credential/key-handling boundary.
cbDatau32 at offset 0, 4 bytes padding,pbDatau64 at offset 8, 16 bytes total. That matches x64, and the path is gated toprocess.arch === "x64". Input, entropy and output blobs plus the data array stay referenced by locals for the whole synchronous call.Buffer.allocdoes not use the shared pool, andptr()respectsbyteOffset.LocalFreeruns infinallyon every successful call, including size rejection. A failed call returns before readingpbData(Windows leaves it unset), so nothing is freed twice or leaked. Number conversion of the pointer is exact for user-space x64 addresses.CRYPTPROTECT_UI_FORBIDDENis set, with noLOCAL_MACHINE, so the scope is CurrentUser. Entropy isTextEncoderUTF-8 of the same ASCII purpose string the helper passes to[Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetBytes, so the bytes are identical. The new Windows x64 test opens a PowerShell-protected blob in-process.crypt32.dlluses theGetSystemDirectoryWresult (resolveTrustedWindowsSystemDirectory), so%SystemRoot%,PATHand CWD cannot redirect it. Under WOW64 a 32-bit process would get SysWOW64, but Bun on Windows is x64/ARM64 only. Fixed inee8205df2:kernel32.dllwas loaded by bare name. As a KnownDLL that was not exploitable, but it now comes from the same trusted directory.ee8205df2: the native cleartext buffer was zeroed only on the success path, so an oversized result was freed without being cleared. Zeroing now happens infinallybeforeLocalFree. The returned JS copy is the caller's key and cannot be zeroed here. Errors carry only fixed codes, and nothing is logged.desktop_compatibility_windows_requiredbefore any FFI work. On ARM64, or whendlopenor trusted-directory resolution fails, the code falls back to the trusted PowerShell helper, which protects with the same DPAPI scope. If that fails as well, the call rejects. No path stores an unprotected key.Checklist
Summary by CodeRabbit
Round 3 (70ef114): CodeRabbit Security/Minor finding fixed. The view over the DPAPI output buffer is created inside the try, so LocalFree runs even if view creation throws; LocalFree sits in an inner finally so it also runs if zeroing throws. Typecheck, the DPAPI test file and the file-size ratchet pass locally; Windows proof is the lane=all run above.
Round 4 (0d5fd21): CodeRabbit Security/Minor follow-up fixed. Unprotected output is wiped natively with kernel32 RtlZeroMemory (same trusted System32 load) by address and length before LocalFree, so clearing no longer depends on the JS view being created. A failure to bind RtlZeroMemory makes the native loader return null and keeps the PowerShell helper. Typecheck, authority tests and the file-size ratchet pass locally; Windows proof is the lane=all run above.
