Summary

  • Preserve integration OFF when an approved custom Codex provider reaches its URL write boundary. Recheck persisted intent under the Codex/config locks after the client guard. Preserve consent and recovery evidence on a skip, and keep validation-only inspection free of persistent mutation metadata.
  • Bind both ocx usage compare windows to one connection, usage owner, destination and credential fingerprint. Abort with an owner-mismatch retry message if the connection/account/key changes; credentials and fingerprints remain private.
  • Fix two concurrent-sync failure mechanisms: inspect approval records under the same lock as publication, and capture the config inode after acquiring the shared write lock. The latter admits a preceding writer's completed atomic replacement while retaining canonical-retarget, dangling-symlink, live-handle and post-acquisition publication guards.
  • Record child diagnostics in the concurrency regression. Retry-only rounds preserve the preimage and must converge on an uncontended sync. Update structure contracts and user docs. Latest merged dev is 1f96e405a9, including the keep-native-v1 and macOS scanner corrections.

Verification

  • Local tests/typecheck: NOT RUN, as required by the coordinator to avoid Mac resource contention. Static diff review and git diff origin/dev...HEAD --check passed.
  • Exact-head remote Linux (lidge, Bun 1.4.3): OCX_LANE_SLOTS=3 ~/bin/ocx-lane-ci2.sh 6b1015e85ddd3d9b7776160f686684c6a2b56286 f5-6b1015e8-lidge tests/codex-integration/codex-provider-routing.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-config-write-lock.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-prompt-route.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-prompt-layers.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-prompt-layers-read.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-prompt-layers-write.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-journal.test.ts tests/cli/cli-usage-compare.test.ts tests/cli/cli-usage-hub.test.ts tests/cli/cli-usage-scope.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/import-cycle-ratchet.test.ts tests/providers/xai/grok-config-write-lock.test.ts — typecheck exit 0; 374 passed / 0 failed across twelve files. Summary: ~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-6b1015e8-lidge.summary.
  • Remote red/green proof: restoring each affected source from feat(cli): carry usage comparison, log history, restart and Codex controls #7222 (4ed45e9516) with the regressions retained produces 3 provider failures and 6 usage-owner failures / 2 stable-owner passes. Restoring final source produces 33 passed / 0 failed in the two files. Logs: ~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-final-{provider-red,usage-red,green}.log.
  • Shared-lock admission regressions fail 3/3 against the old lock implementation, covering the preceding-writer inode gap, canonical retarget and dangling-symlink admission. Final source passes these and the complete existing lock-hardening suite. Log: ~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-lock-entry-red.log.
  • Caller-specific unreadable-config errors remain intact. The existing prompt-route regression fails on intermediate fba19e6524 and passes on final source; combined with the three lock-entry regressions, 4 targeted checks passed. Logs: ~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-prompt-error-red.log and ~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-lock-entry-green.log.
  • Validation metadata assertion fails on intermediate head 97a80456bc and passes on final source. Log: ~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-validation-red.log.
  • Exact-head Linux stress: bun test tests/codex-integration/codex-provider-routing.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-config-write-lock.test.ts --test-name-pattern 'concurrent sync processes|concurrent approval replacement|^acquisition (witnesses|refuses|does not admit)' — 50/50 consecutive runs passed. Logs: ~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-final-concurrent-{1..50}.log.
  • Exact-head remote Windows (mini, Bun 1.4.3): same twelve-file lane, label f5-6b1015e8-mini — typecheck exit 0; 369 passed / 5 skipped / 0 failed. Summary: ~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-6b1015e8-mini.summary.
  • Current-head hosted structure and docs-build gates: passed. Current-head remote bun run privacy:scan: exit 0 (~/ocx-lane/logs/f5-privacy-final.log).
  • Hosted PR CI on this head: passed, including all four Ubuntu shards and the ci aggregate (PR run). The named concurrent-sync regression passed in Linux test 2/4 at 11:03:18 UTC and in macOS control at 11:14:20 UTC, both on 6b1015e85ddd3d9b7776160f686684c6a2b56286. The full macOS control job is still running; only the named regression is certified here. No superseded run is counted as final-head certification.
  • Root-cause evidence: a superseded current-branch hosted run captured the shared lock's stale-inode exception inside the three-process test. This lock defect predates feat(cli): carry usage comparison, log history, restart and Codex controls #7222 and is exposed by its new approved-provider write path. The separate unlocked approval-record race is also reproduced. The original dev macOS log omitted child stderr, so its exact exception cannot be identified conclusively. The unrelated scanner-fixture failure from an earlier dispatch is fixed by merged fix(ci): preserve import cycles through macOS path aliases #7241, included here.
  • Outside F5: the current manual dispatch desktop-shell job failed Rust Clippy manual_noop_waker at desktop/src-tauri/src/process_spawn.rs:173. That file is unchanged here; coordinator follow-up and the final lane=all on dev own this unrelated failure.
  • Security self-review covers consent timing, owner isolation, token handling, canonical destinations and preserved publication guards. No independent security-review claim is made. No merge is requested or performed.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

📝 Walkthrough

The usage comparison command pins both reads to one connection and credential owner. Approved Codex provider routing coordinates approval inspection, journal cleanup, and URL publication under configuration locks. It also checks whether startup sync is enabled.

Changes: Usage Comparison Ownership

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pin and validate usage reads
src/cli/usage-compare.ts, tests/cli/cli-usage-compare.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/agents.md, structure/cli-management.md
The command captures one owner for both reads, uses captured proxy headers for disconnected requests, and checks ownership before and after each read. Tests cover stable owners and changes to connection, account, credential, transport, or admin authentication. The documentation describes retry behavior and notes that the reads remain sequential and non-atomic.

Codex Provider Routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Revalidate config destination on lock acquisition
src/codex/config-write-lock.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-config-write-lock.test.ts, structure/codex-home.md
After acquiring the config lock, the code re-resolves the destination and validates its canonical identity. Tests cover a preceding writer’s replacement, symlink retargeting, and a dangling symlink.
Coordinate approved-provider injection
src/codex/provider-routing.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-provider-routing.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-integration.md, structure/codex-provider-routing.md
Injection performs approval inspection and routing-target validation in the locked operation. Non-validation calls use the config mutation lock; publication checks startup sync and config state before journal cleanup or URL updates. Tests cover validation-only calls, concurrent sync, integration being off, and approval-record replacement. Documentation describes the integration-off behavior and locked write flow.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6b101

The changes to config write locking show no concrete defect in the reviewed files. One earlier test-quality concern about the provider-routing race test remains unresolved and should be checked, but it is low risk and does not affect production behavior.

P2 Badge Propagate the late opt-out as a skipped injection

When the Codex switch turns OFF after syncModelsToCodex's initial gate but before publication, returning false here is indistinguishable from “this provider was never approved.” injectCodexConfigImpl consequently follows its unapproved-external-provider branch and returns a successful applied result instead of status: "skipped"; syncModelsToCodex then preserves any catalog/cache-write flags, so ocx sync can restart Codex and report that the user should approve a provider whose consent is still present. Return a distinct desired-state skip result and propagate it through the injector, with a caller-level regression for this race.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

P2 Badge Avoid locking validation-only provider checks

This unconditional mutation-lock acquisition also covers validateOnly, even though apply returns at line 139 without reading intent or publishing anything. The sync preflight calls this path with validateOnly: true; because the SQLite mutation lock uses busy_timeout=0 and injectCodexConfig does not translate ConfigMutationLockError, any concurrent configuration write now aborts an otherwise read-only ocx sync preflight. Keep the mutation lock around the actual desired-state recheck and publication path, but retain the previous lock-free behavior for validation-only and already-current returns.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Concurrent fail-fast lock contenders can all return retryable conflicts. Assert that such a round preserves the preimage, then require one uncontended sync to publish before checking crash-restorable output.

Only real approved-provider writes acquire the config mutation lock. Read-only validation and unapproved provider inspection retain the Codex file lock without creating a persistent config mutation database.

Make the race test reach the bounded reader before adding a one-shot guard.

injectCodexConfigImpl calls injectApprovedCodexProvider, which reads the approval record inside withConfigWriteLockHeld. The test replaces the record only when .ocx-write.lock is absent, so this callback cannot fire on the normal path.

The callback also spies on the node:fs namespace, while readBoundedCodexConfig uses a named statSync import. The spy therefore does not intercept the reader. The test can pass without exercising the atomic replacement.

Install a test seam that controls the bounded reader’s actual statSync call, trigger the replacement at the first record observation, and assert that the hook fired. Add a fired guard only if the corrected hook can receive multiple observations.

A preceding writer can atomically replace config.toml and release between destination lookup and lock acquisition. Observe its committed inode under the acquired lock while retaining canonical-retarget and live-handle checks. Keep strict publication guards for changes after acquisition.

Maintainer landing note: PR checks are green on this head. The concurrent sync regression (codex-provider-routing "concurrent sync processes leave a complete restorable config") passes here in hosted Linux and in the macOS control job of the branch dispatch (run 38890799907). A final lane=all on the dev tip follows.
