…calls MiMo V2 Chat models (dotted mimo-v2.* IDs) can emit an entire freeform call only as a standalone bare <tool_call><function=exec> block with no structured delta.tool_calls payload. The client then rendered the raw markup as visible assistant text while the harness executed it client-side, producing unreadable output (lidge-jun#7214 follow-up). When no structured call exists, qualifying bare blocks that name a declared freeform tool's wire name are now recovered as synthetic input calls, streamed and buffered. A block qualifies only with a non-empty body free of nested parameter wrappers and nested block headers — the same safety rules as the existing empty-input recovery — so prose, fenced examples, undeclared tools, other models, and hyphenated MiMo IDs keep the original no-recovery behavior. ADR-5724 follow-up and chat-compat contract updated.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Preserve streaming candidates until recovery can decide their fate.
If a qualifying bare block is followed by more than 8 KiB of prose before the terminal frame, ingestStreaming can release the held block as visible text. At flush time, toolCallContent.current() no longer contains it. The streaming path then emits no synthetic call, so the requested tool does not run. Preserve eligible candidates across the bounded release, or define and test an explicit fallback that does not promise recovery for this case. Add a streaming regression beside the buffered cases in tests/adapters/openai/openai-chat-serialized-tool-call-content.test.ts.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Reject nested block headers before recovering a call.
If a declared exec block contains <tool_call><function=read_file> in its body, blockAt can return that body, and this condition still accepts it. The adapter then emits an executable exec call from markup that the new recovery contract says must remain inert. Reject a nested block header in call.body before returning a recovered block.

Live Deployment Status (Windows, opencodex 2.87.0)The fix from this PR is now live on the reporter's local proxy while awaiting upstream merge:
Real-world validation now in progress: the original failure thread (Codex Desktop via MiMo 2.6-pro) is being re-tested with tool-calling tasks to confirm bare |
Live E2E Proof (real proxy, real MiMo 2.6-pro, 5 test scenarios)Ran live requests through
Key findings:
Verdict: The primary defect (bare block with no structured payload rendering as raw markup) is fixed and verified live. A secondary intermittent echo shape (non-JSON args + bare block, plain function tools only) remains open — filing separately if maintainers want it addressed in this PR or a follow-up. |
… calls
Two follow-ups from live 20-run adversarial testing:
1. The raw-text echo match required freeformTool to be declared. Live
runs showed MiMo sends raw JS arguments for plain JSON function
tools too; the match now fires for any tool whose arguments are
non-JSON raw text equal to the block body. Text that merely looks
like JSON (leading { or [) stays protected so truncated JSON
payloads keep the preservation contract.
2. terminateWithError released held text without reconciliation. An
echo block that exactly matched one of the undelivered calls was
still duplicate markup; the error path now reconciles against the
closed calls before releasing, same as the success path.
terminateWithError released held text without reconciliation, so an echo block that exactly matched one of the undelivered calls leaked as visible markup when the turn failed. The error path now runs the same reconcile-and-drain the success path uses.
Live 20-run testing surfaced a third close shape: the echo block ends </parameter></invoke>\n</function_calls> with no </tool_call> at all. blockAt now treats </function_calls> as a completed close only when a known function closer (</function> or </invoke>) immediately precedes it, so prose that merely mentions the tag cannot terminate a block.
Live testing surfaced args sent as body+body raw text with no JSON wrapper. The reduction now runs inside doubledInputReduction, which reduceUnambiguousDoubledInput already guards with the single-explanation rule, so competing calls keep their arguments unchanged.
Socratic Verification: full adversarial loop completeEach claim was interrogated with falsification tests; four over-broad first drafts were caught by existing safety tests and narrowed before landing. Final state: Claims verified
Defects found and fixed during interrogation (6 commits)
Safety tests that caught over-broad drafts
Each failure sharpened the rule instead of weakening the test. That is the Socratic loop working. |
The live screenshot showed the block starting mid-line directly after a prose sentence with no newline — the most common emission position. The line-start streaming splitter deliberately keeps those visible, so suppression now also scans mid-line blocks at reconciliation time, with the same function-name + exact-body agreement rule. Also handles the <const input> wrapper MiMo puts inside the function body (same family as the malformed <parameter= opener), stripping it before comparison in both the echo matcher and standalone recovery.
Live 20-run testing surfaced a seventh close shape: the echo block ends </parameter></invoke>\n</function_name> (no </function> or </function_calls>). nextBlockClose now also considers </function_name>, and the alternate-close rule accepts it only when a known function closer precedes it, matching the </function_calls> treatment.
Socratic Round 2: attacking the claims that survived round 1Each surviving claim was re-interrogated. Three new defects surfaced and were fixed. New claims tested
New defects found by round 2 (2 more commits)
Why these weren't caught in round 1Round 1's adversarial prompt happened to produce line-start blocks. The mid-line shape only appeared when the model emitted prose and the block on the same conceptual "paragraph" — exactly what the live screenshot showed. This is why Socratic interrogation of successful claims matters: the first round's pass concealed emission variants the prompt never triggered. Cumulative totals

Live testing from the actual Codex Desktop harness session showed the wrapper is <const r=> (a variable declaration fragment), not only the literal <const input>. The strip regex now accepts any <const NAME> or <const NAME= shape, with or without the trailing angle bracket.
…nst declarations Two live shapes exist and need opposite strips: - <const input>const r=await... : the tag is a complete wrapper; the script restarts with its own const. Strip the whole tag. - <const r=await tools... : the script IS const r=await... and the leading < is the only stray character. Drop just the bracket.
…sktop harness path) The Codex Desktop harness plugin executes bare <tool_call> blocks client-side and sends no tool declarations to the proxy. The standalone recovery required declared freeform tools, so these sessions never triggered any suppression and the raw markup rendered as the assistant's visible answer. When the routed model is a dotted MiMo V2 ID, no structured call exists, and no freeform tools are declared, the flush paths now strip bare blocks from the visible text events. The harness still executes the block from its own client-side parse; the proxy only keeps the markup out of the answer.
The Codex Desktop harness sessions show MiMo emitting tool-call blocks directly after a prose sentence with no newline. The line-start streaming splitter deliberately released those as visible text, so no recovery or reconciliation ever saw them (live debug: heldBytes=0 on every request). The buffer now has a holdMidLine mode (enabled for mimo-v2.6-pro) that also holds from a mid-line <tool_call><function= header, including partial tag prefixes split across stream chunks. At flush time, when no structured call claimed the held text, stripStandaloneBareBlocks removes the block so it never renders as the assistant's answer. The harness still executes the block from its own client-side parse. Enabled only for mimo-v2.6-pro: the think-section tests legitimately keep mid-line blocks visible on mimo-v2.6-flash.
Problem
MiMo V2 Chat models (dotted
mimo-v2.*IDs likemimo-v2.6-pro) can emit an entire freeform call only as a standalone bare<tool_call><function=exec>...</function></tool_call>block incontent, with no structureddelta.tool_callspayload at all. Observed on a real Codex Desktop session routed through opencodex: the raw markup (with its embedded JavaScript) rendered as visible assistant text, making the response unreadable while a client-side harness executed the block anyway. The existing reconciliation in
serialized-tool-call-content.tssuppresses bare blocks only when a structured call in the same response agrees with them (ADR-5548) or recovers input when MiMo sends one empty structured call plus exactly one standalone block with no other text (ADR-5724 follow-up 260924). The no-payload shape fell through both:duplicatedSerializedToolCallRangesreturns[]whenstructuredCalls.length === 0, so the buffer released the markup as ordinary text.Change
When no structured call exists and the model is a dotted MiMo V2 ID, qualifying bare blocks are recovered as synthetic freeform calls:
recoverStandaloneBareBlocks()inserialized-tool-call-content.tsreturns blocks whose function name matches a declared freeform tool's wire name and whose body passes the same safety rules as the empty-input recovery: non-empty, no nested<parameter=/</parameter>wrappers, malformed<parameter=opener handled identically.flushToolCallsinopenai-chat.ts) drains held text with synthetic references so the markup is suppressed, then emitstool_call_start/tool_call_delta/tool_call_endper recovered block.parseResponse) builds the same synthetic calls before reconciliation soreconcileSerializedToolCallEventssuppresses the matching markup.Deliberately unchanged: prose around a qualifying block stays visible; fenced examples, blocks naming undeclared tools, other models, and hyphenated MiMo IDs (
mimo-v2-pro,mimo-v2-omni) keep the original no-recovery behavior. This is a carry of #7214's direction to the no-structured-payload shape.Testing
