Holding this one for now — not merging yet.

CI is green, but vitest 5 requires Node >= 20.19 / 22.12, while this package still declares engines.node: ">=18.0.0". Merging would silently drop Node 18 for contributors running the test suite.

This should land together with a deliberate engines bump to >=20 (the CI matrix already dropped 18.x). Deferring until that decision is made so we don't quietly narrow supported Node versions. vitest stays pinned at ^4.1.11 in the meantime.
