Problem

Runners built locally with Xcode 27.1 don't start on simulators:

  • make sim-install: the runner fails at launch with dyld: Library not loaded: @rpath/XCTest.framework/XCTest. Xcode 27 no longer embeds XCTest, XCTestCore, XCUIAutomation, etc. into devicekit-iosUITests-Runner.app/Frameworks (the folder is empty in build products).
  • make sim-zip-*: zip -r updates an existing zip instead of replacing it, so a fresh build was merged into an old zip from an earlier Xcode. That left an old Testing.framework next to the new _Testing_Foundation.framework copied by patch-runner.sh, and the test bundle failed to load with Symbol not found: _$s7Testing12FileClonableMp. The agent never answers, and mobilecli times out with "timed out waiting for WebDriverAgent to be ready".

Fix

  • scripts/patch-runner.sh: if the runner has no XCTest.framework, copy the XCTest frameworks and libXCTestSwiftSupport.dylib from the selected Xcode's platform directory. Runners that Xcode already filled in (Xcode 26) are left alone.
  • Makefile: rm -f each zip/ipa before zip -r.

Test plan

  • Xcode 27.1, make sim-zip-arm64: the zip contains a matching set of test frameworks
  • That runner starts and serves requests on an iOS 26.5 simulator (iPhone 17 Pro)
  • That runner starts and serves requests on an iOS 17.5 simulator (iPhone 15 Pro)
  • Xcode 26 build: runner unchanged (frameworks already embedded, so the copy is skipped). Not verified, no Xcode 26 on hand.
  • ipa-unsigned with Xcode 27 on a real device

Walkthrough

The packaging commands remove existing output archives before creating runner and app IPAs or simulator ZIPs. The runner patch script copies available XCTest-related frameworks and libXCTestSwiftSupport.dylib when the runner does not already contain XCTest.framework.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 68b66

The change removes stale archives before packaging and bundles XCTest frameworks when Xcode doesn't embed them. The author reports successful simulator runs on two iOS versions. No concrete merge-blocking risk was identified; Xcode 26 and real-device Xcode 27 builds were not verified.
