With the keeper switched on, a thread's agent process now runs inside the keeper, and the app records how much of its output is safely saved, so a later step can take a turn back after a restart.

Continues #976 (step 2 of the agent keeper). Off by default, behind BOITE_KEEPER=1; a restart still ends turns.

what changed

  • Keeper protocol v2 runs processes on pipes, keeps unacked stdout up to 8 MiB and a 64 KiB stderr tail; a v1 keeper is left to exit (keeper/pipe-process.ts).
  • A session's own agent process becomes a KeptChild, the node child shape drivers and the Claude SDK read (keeper/kept-child.ts).
  • Probes, titles, side questions, shared executions and protected launches stay on the core's pipes (threads/turn-context.ts, procs.ts).
  • Schema 49 adds kept_processes; its offset is written in the streamed parts' commit, and the keeper is acked after it (keeper/kept-agents.ts, journal/stream-buffer.ts).
  • Output that brings no text arms a commit, and 4 MiB uncommitted forces one, inside the keeper's window.
  • An unreachable keeper leaves the launch on direct pipes with one keeper.agent-direct warning per outage.
  • A stopping core releases its kept agents; the next core clears leftover rows and the shells' restore releases leftover processes.
  • The echo driver gains [process] and [flood:N], which stream the turn through a child (drivers/echo-agent.ts).
  • docs/keeper.md covers agent sessions, offsets and the bench.

to question

Acks ride the 500 ms persist transaction, not the 16 ms delta flush: the flush only moves text into memory, so acking there could let the keeper drop bytes whose events are not on disk.

Bundle size

coreJavaScript grows 14,427 bytes (0.29 %): the keeper's pipe processes, KeptChild, the offset ledger, the kept_processes table and the echo child, all core code loaded only with the keeper on or an echo [process] turn. coreBundle grows 96 bytes (0.80 %) for the --echo-agent entry of the bundle.

verified

  • bun test test/keeper-agents.test.ts: 7 pass; the echo turn test fails when the launch is not marked keep, and the three tests the review added fail on the previous head.
  • bun test test/echo.test.ts -t 'stopped \[process\]': a stopped [process] turn emits 0 deltas after the stop, 27 on the previous head.
  • BOITE_KEEPER=1 on the keeper, pi, Codex, Muse, ACP, stdio and echo suites: 350 pass.
  • Same suites without the keeper plus procs, terminals and journal: 181 pass.
  • bun run check passes.
  • BOITE_KEEPER=1 bun bench/keeper-agent.ts 64 20, Linux, Bun 1.4.2, 2026-11-07:
core's pipes keeper
first stdout byte, median of 20 13.95 ms 13.89 ms
64 MiB stdout, median of 3 217.3 MiB/s 214.8 MiB/s
8 MiB echo turn to idle, median of 3 145 ms 191 ms
  • reviewed by GPT-6.1 Sol: 3 rounds, approved
  • not verified: macOS, the compiled binary's --echo-agent, real Claude and Codex logins through the keeper, a keeper killed mid-turn.

Behind BOITE_KEEPER=1. Protocol v2 adds pipe processes with acked stdout (8 MiB window) and a stderr tail. A session's agent process becomes a KeptChild; its kept_processes row (schema 49) gets the read offset in the transaction that commits the streamed parts, and the keeper is acked after that commit.
…ile connecting

A stop and a new session in the same millisecond no longer kill the new one; close waits for the readers' end so a last unterminated record is parsed; a launch goes to the keeper only when connected; a stopping core releases its kept agents so the keeper exits.

This pull request runs each thread's agent session process inside the keeper when BOITE_KEEPER=1 is set, so the keeper holds output on pipes until the core confirms it is saved. It records how much output is committed in a new kept_processes table and tells the keeper to drop bytes only after that journal commit. A restart still ends turns; the stored offsets prepare a later step that can take a turn back.

Commands run (11)

Ran keeper-agents suite: 7 pass (echo turn via keeper, window ack commits, unreachable keeper fallback, leftover cleanup, millisecond restart, post-close start, kept-child close). Ran keeper suite: 9 pass (shell survival, close/stop, dropped core, job group, mid-start close, ring bytes, frame limit, token). Ran bun run --cwd packages/core check (tsc): pass. Did not finish broader echo/procs/journal/provider suites or a live BOITE_KEEPER=1 core exercise before budget expired; no failure reproduced.

## The core

```sh
bun run dev:core            # watch the core sources
bun run core                # built bundle when present, sources otherwise
```

A scratch core needs its own data directory:

```sh
scratch_dir=$(mktemp -d)
BOITE_ECHO=1 BOITE_HOST_AGENTS=0 bun packages/core/src/main.ts --port 0 --data-dir "$scratch_dir"
```

The ready line is `boite-core ready http://127.0.0.1:<port>`. It contains no
pairing grant or token. The owner token is stored in `<dataDir>/core.json`
with mode `0600`; the owner requests a phone link through Settings or
`pairing.grant`. Stop the scratch core before removing its directory.

One core holds `<dataDir>/core.lock`. Another refuses to start on the same data.
The operating system holds the lock (`flock` on Linux and macOS, `LockFileEx`
on Windows, `packages/core/src/platform/`) and drops it when its holder dies,
so a dead holder never blocks a start and two starts never both get in. The
file's record (PID, start time, Linux start key, `osLock`) names the holder in
the refusal only. A record without `osLock` comes from a core older than the
OS lock: Linux compares its start key (boot id and start ticks), Windows
rejects a reused PID more than two seconds newer than the record, and macOS
retains it while its PID is alive.

| Option | Meaning |
