What a user gets

Before: findSlice resolves a slice and then walks up to its mission with findOwningMission, which compares each path.dirname(...) against missionsRoot exactly. path.dirname never ends in a separator, so when the missions root was written with a trailing slash, the walk never matched and every slice lookup failed with Slice path "…" resolved to … but no parent mission was found. Two common ways to get such a root:

  • rig config set workspace.slices_root /w/missions/: configuredMissionsRoot returns the stored value as is;
  • --workspace /w/missions/ or OPENRIG_WORK_ROOT=/w/missions/: resolveMissionsRoot returns a named missions folder as is.

That broke rig proof add, the rig scope slice commands and every other findSlice caller.

After: findOwningMission compares against path.resolve(missionsRoot), so /w/missions/ and /w/missions behave the same. The fix is in the one shared helper rather than at each place a root is produced.

How you verified it

Upstream main at bc0e44b plus this change, Node 22.

New case in packages/cli/test/scope-fs.test.ts: with missionsRoot + path.sep, both a hinted bare slice name and an absolute slice path resolve to their mission.

before (src reverted): Tests 1 failed | 61 passed (62)
after:                 scope-fs.test.ts: 62 passed

Wider run over test/scope*, test/slice* and test/proof*: 404 passed, 23 failed. All 23 failures fail identically on unmodified main in my checkout:

  • 17 in scope-slice-claims.test.ts spawn packages/cli/dist/index.js, which isn't built here;
  • 6 rig scope audit ordinal naming cases in scope-commands.test.ts also fail without the change.

tsc --noEmit -p packages/cli/tsconfig.json is clean.

Not run: npm run build or the full npm test.

Anything you were unsure about

I could also normalize the roots where they are produced (configuredMissionsRoot, resolveMissionsRoot). I kept the change to the one comparison that breaks, so error messages still show the path the user configured.

If this is security-related

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected mission ownership lookup when the configured missions root ends with a separator or is provided as a relative path. Slice paths are now resolved consistently whether they are absolute, relative to a mission, or bare slice names used with a mission hint. For relative missions roots, returned slice paths are normalized to absolute paths.

Normalize the candidate directory before ownership lookup.

When workspace.slices_root is relative and findSlice receives a bare slice name with a mission hint, path.join(missionsRoot, hintMission, "slices", slicePath) remains relative. findOwningMission resolves only missionsRoot, so its relative dir never enters the loop and returns null. findSlice then throws instead of resolving the existing slice.

Normalize the candidate directory as well:

Suggested fix
   const root = path.resolve(missionsRoot);
-  let dir = path.dirname(slicePath);
+  let dir = path.resolve(path.dirname(slicePath));

Thanks, @rudycelekli. You're right that workspace.slices_root, OPENRIG_WORKSPACE_SLICES_ROOT and --workspace (or OPENRIG_WORK_ROOT) reach findSlice exactly as typed. Main's findOwningMission then compares path.dirname(dir) === missionsRoot, which never matches a root ending in a slash, so every slice and proof lookup fails. Resolving the root fixes that.

One change, please. With a relative missions root, this now makes the root absolute (scope-fs.ts:572) while the candidate directory stays relative (:573). For example, with OPENRIG_WORKSPACE_SLICES_ROOT=missions, running rig scope slice show 07-target --mission m1 from the workspace directory works on main but fails here with "…resolved to missions/m1/slices/07-target but no parent mission was found". Please resolve the candidate the same way, so both sides are absolute against the same working directory:

let dir = path.dirname(path.resolve(slicePath));

That also fixes a relative root with a path lookup like m1/slices/07-target, which fails on main. Please add a test for a relative root with a bare slice name and --mission.

Optionally, you could normalize once where the root is resolved (scope-fs.ts:204 and :282), which would cover every caller.

After your push, we'll take another look.

Thanks, @mvschwarz. Pushed (I also merged the latest main). findOwningMission now resolves the candidate the same way as the root, path.dirname(path.resolve(slicePath)), so both sides are absolute against the same working directory.

The new test in scope-fs.test.ts runs from the workspace directory with a relative root. findSlice("missions", "07-target", "release-0.3.2"), the same lookup with missions/, and findSlice("missions", "release-0.3.2/slices/07-target") all find release-0.3.2. That test fails with the previous commit of this PR. scope-fs and scope-fs-spec-md: 71/71 pass, and tsc is clean. I left the optional normalization at :204/:282 out to keep this to the one comparison.

🟡 Minor · Return an absolute SliceInfo.absPath for relative hinted lookups. · scope-fs.ts:557-558

packages/cli/src/lib/scope/scope-fs.ts:557-558
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Return an absolute SliceInfo.absPath for relative hinted lookups.

When missionsRoot is relative and a hinted bare name selects a relative candidate, findOwningMission resolves only its local copy. buildSliceInfo then derives absPath from the unchanged candidate, so the returned SliceInfo.absPath remains relative. Resolve the candidate before deriving sliceRoot, and assert the absolute path in the relative-root test.

🐛 Suggested fix
-      const sliceRoot = path.dirname(candidate);
+      const sliceRoot = path.dirname(path.resolve(candidate));
       return buildSliceInfo(mission, sliceRoot, path.basename(candidate));
-      expect(findSlice("missions", "07-target", "release-0.3.2").missionName).toBe("release-0.3.2");
+      const hinted = findSlice("missions", "07-target", "release-0.3.2");
+      expect(hinted.missionName).toBe("release-0.3.2");
+      expect(hinted.absPath).toBe(path.join(root, "missions", "release-0.3.2", "slices", "07-target"));

Follow-up to CodeRabbit's outside-diff note: with a relative missions root, SliceInfo.absPath came back relative, because only findOwningMission resolved the candidate. findSlice now derives sliceRoot from path.resolve(candidate), and the relative-root test asserts the absolute absPath. That assertion fails on the previous commit. scope-fs and scope-fs-spec-md: 71/71 pass.

Thanks again, @rudycelekli. 40084a49 did what we asked: the slice candidate now resolves the same way as the missions root, so a relative root with --mission works as it does on main. We're also fine with a97f9854 printing a relative root's slice path as absolute, to match every other root form.

Two changes, please:

  1. A path ending in /. or /sub/... scope-fs.ts:557-558 takes the directory from the resolved candidate but the name from the unresolved one (path.basename(candidate)). So rig scope slice show /w/missions/m1/slices/07-target/. now selects /w/missions/m1/slices, the parent folder, and /w/missions/m1/slices/07-target/sub/.. selects the mission folder, where main selected /w/missions/m1/slices/07-target for both. Please resolve the candidate once (for example const resolved = path.resolve(candidate)) and take both the directory and the name from that, with tests for /. and /sub/...
  2. An absolute slice path that leaves the missions root. For example, /w/missions/../other/m1/slices/x when that folder exists. On main its mission label reads .., but the slice path still points at the requested folder, which show, progress updates and proof output use. With this change it fails with "no parent mission was found". Please keep that path working with the smallest change to the existing resolver, rather than adding a second one. If keeping it would make the fix much bigger, please say so here rather than shipping the error.

After your push, we'll take another look.
