What a user gets

Before: computeTopBurn derives a provider window's velocity from the first and last provider_window samples in the burn span. When the five-hour or weekly window reset inside that span, the two readings belong to different windows. Example: 90% at 10:00 (resets_at 11:00), then 5% at 12:00 in the new window. That gave percentPerHour = (5 - 90) / 2 = -42.5, and rig usage top printed five_hour: 5% (-42.5%/h). The token half of the same function already refuses this ("a restart dropped the totals — never negative burn").

After: a window's rate uses only the readings in the latest reading's window, those whose resets_at matches its value within USAGE_CLOCK_TOLERANCE_MS. The same-window check is the daemon's existing sameReset, moved into provider/usage-windows.ts and exported. Fewer than two such readings means no rate (percentPerHour: null), and a falling percentage within the window still gives none. So across a reset the rate is the current window's, or none. It is never the cross-window number main shows, which can be negative or, after the new window climbs past the old reading, falsely positive. usedPercentFirst stays the span's first reading, and the code documents that. The CLI prints five_hour: 5% with no rate when there is none. Readings without resets_at match each other, so they are rated across the span with the falling guard.

How you verified it

Upstream main at bc0e44b plus this change, Node 22.

Cases in packages/daemon/test/usage-series.test.ts:

  • 90% then 5% across a reset gives no rate;
  • 10% (resets_at 11:00) then 30% (resets_at 16:00) gives no rate, where main gave +10%/h;
  • 95% in the old window, then 10% and 30% in the new one (resets_at 30s apart, inside the tolerance), gives +10%/h from the new window only.
src reverted to main: the three reset cases fail
after: usage*, provider*, claude-usage*, telemetry*: 365 of 366 passed; the one failure, a process-timing test in provider-claude-usage.test.ts, passes 20/20 when run alone

tsc --noEmit -p packages/daemon/tsconfig.json is clean.

Not run: the full npm test, or rig usage top against live provider samples.

Anything you were unsure about

Nothing major. This round follows the review: the same-window check reuses sameReset, and the readings without resets_at keep the falling-percentage guard.

📝 Walkthrough

Provider-window velocity now uses readings from the latest reading’s reset period. Reset-time comparison is shared between provider-window calculations and Claude window selection. Tests cover resets between readings and calculations within the latest reset period.

Changes: Provider-window velocity

Shared reset-time comparison

Added sameReset to compare reset times and replaced the local Claude comparator. Provider-window reading grouping imports the shared helper.
Velocity within the latest reset period

Velocity uses readings from the latest reset period and is null when that subset cannot produce a measurable rate. Tests cover resets and confirm that endpoint percentages still span the full window.

A late older provider sample can make top-burn velocity display a rate from the wrong reset window. This is a bounded reporting issue, but the ordering should be corrected.

Thanks, @rudycelekli. You're right that computeTopBurn rated a provider window from the span's first and last readings, so a five-hour window that reset inside the span showed a negative rate (for example five_hour: 5% (-42.5%/h)). With any burn window over five hours, an active seat's five_hour series always crosses a reset, and showing no rate beats showing a negative one.

One change, please. Rate only the current window, which the samples already identify. Every provider_window sample stores resets_at, and your fixture has a different resets_at on each side of the reset. Checking for a falling percentage misses a reset when the new window's reading is higher than the old one. For example, 10% at 10:00 (resets_at 11:00) then 30% at 12:00 (resets_at 16:00) still gives a cross-window +10.0%/h, on main and with this change.

  • Please move the daemon's existing same-window check, sameReset (provider/claude-usage-windows.ts:94-98), into provider/usage-windows.ts next to USAGE_CLOCK_TOLERANCE_MS, and export it. It already treats resets within that tolerance as one window.
  • In computeTopBurn, rate only the readings in the same window as the latest reading, show no rate if there are fewer than two, and keep your falling-percentage guard within that window.
  • Samples without resets_at can keep the behavior your PR gives them.
  • Tests: the rising cross-window case (no rate), a same-window pair (a rate), and the existing falling case.
  • Please also note in the code whether usedPercentFirst is the span's first reading or the current window's first.

This changes one thing users see, on purpose. Across a reset, the rate is the current window's, or none, instead of the cross-window number main shows, which can be negative.

After your push, we'll take another look.

Thanks, @mvschwarz. Pushed (I also merged the latest main).

  • sameReset moved unchanged from claude-usage-windows.ts into provider/usage-windows.ts, next to USAGE_CLOCK_TOLERANCE_MS. It's exported, and claude-usage-windows.ts now imports it.

  • computeTopBurn rates only the readings that share the latest reading's window (sameReset(r.resetsAt, last.resetsAt)). With fewer than two of them there is no rate, and the falling-percentage guard still applies within that window. Samples without resets_at match each other, as sameReset already treats null and null, so they keep this PR's behavior.

  • WindowVelocity now documents that usedPercentFirst is the span's first reading, which may be from an earlier window, while percentPerHour is the latest window's.

  • Tests in usage-series.test.ts:

    • your rising case (10% with resets_at 11:00, then 30% with resets_at 16:00) gives no rate;
    • a same-window pair after a reset (95% in the old window, then 10% and 30% whose resets_at differ by 30s, inside the tolerance) gives +10%/h;
    • the existing falling case still gives none.

    Both new tests fail on this PR's previous commit.

Results: usage*, provider*, claude-usage* and telemetry*: 365 of 366 pass. The one failure was the process-timing test claudeAuthStatusReader … ignore HUP and TERM, which passes 20/20 when provider-claude-usage.test.ts runs alone. tsc is clean.

Order provider samples by sampledAt before selecting the latest reset window.

readUsageSeries orders rows by captured_at, but the provider cache stores its asOf value as sampled_at. The cache writer has no monotonic-write guard. A late older cache write can therefore become the last captured row. computeTopBurn can then select that older row's resetsAt and report velocity for an old provider window instead of the freshest one.

Suggested fix
-      const rows = providerRows.filter(
-        (r) => r.window === w,
-      );
+      const rows = providerRows
+        .filter((r) => r.window === w)
+        .sort((a, b) =>
+          Date.parse(a.sampledAt ?? a.capturedAt) - Date.parse(b.sampledAt ?? b.capturedAt) || a.id - b.id,
+        );

On CodeRabbit's note about ordering by sampled_at: readUsageSeries orders by captured_at, and that ordering is already on main, where usedPercentLast and resetsAt come from the same last row. This PR only uses that row to pick the window to rate, so a late-arriving older cache write would mislead the existing usedPercentLast/resetsAt just as much. I've left the ordering alone to keep this PR to the reset case. Happy to order by sampled_at (falling back to captured_at) here or in a separate PR if you'd like.

Approved at 78bf738. A provider window is now rated only within its current window, using the daemon's existing reset matching, so a window that reset inside the span no longer shows a negative or cross-window rate. The review and the required CI (8/8) pass at this head.

Thanks again, @rudycelekli, especially for moving the existing sameReset over unchanged rather than copying it, so Claude's window results stay exactly as they were. It's merged and on main. A provider's rate is now worked out only within its current window, so a window that reset inside the span no longer shows a negative or cross-window rate.
