Use a standalone saved Claude account for usage when Claude Code credentials are off - #788
Conversation
…entials are off With "Allow reading Claude Code's credentials" off (the default), Claude usage only came from Claude Code's own login. If that login is missing or expired, Auto fell through to the CLI and the panel went blank even though a working saved account existed in CodexBar. When consent is off and exactly one saved account was never installed into Claude Code, fetch usage from it and renew its token in CodexBar's own store. Claude Code's credential files are never read or written on this path. Track which account CodexBar last installed into Claude Code (switch, save-current, reauthenticate of the live login) so a saved copy that shares Claude Code's refresh-token chain is never rotated. A fresh isolated sign-in or removal clears the marker. fetch_account now shares its body with the new path instead of duplicating it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Stores saved before the installed marker existed do not say how an account was saved, so an unmarked account may share Claude Code's refresh-token chain. Keep an explicit isolated-accounts list, fed only by a fresh CodexBar sign-in, and offer only those accounts for standalone usage. Saving Claude Code's live login now records the account, its installed marker, and the isolation change in one store write. Installing an account into Claude Code clears its isolated mark.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winA failed marker write after a switch leaves the installed account marked as isolated.
switchreplaces Claude Code's credentials first. It then callsset_installed_in_claude_code(Some(id))and treats a failure as best-effort. When that write fails, the target account stays inisolated_accounts, andinstalled_in_claude_codestill points to the previous account or isNone.standalone_usage_credentialscan then pick the target, which Claude Code is now using.fetch_standalone_saved_accountthen renews that refresh token in CodexBar's store. Claude Code still holds the old refresh token, so its next renewal can fail. You can reproduce this with the existing Windows test
switching_does_not_require_a_metadata_write_after_credentials_change. It importsb:two(isolated), makes the store read-only, and switches. After the switch,b:twois installed in Claude Code but still has isolated status. No live login existed, so no store write happened before the credentials changed. That test requires the switch to succeed without a store write, so you cannot simply make the marker write mandatory. Add a second check in
standalone_usage_credentialsthat does not depend on this write. Exclude the account whose ID matchescurrent_account_id(). That function reads only.claude.json, andfetchalready calls it when consent is off.🛡️ Proposed fix

Add deterministic tests for the new standalone fetch path.
The tests in accounts.rs cover only which account is chosen. Nothing tests that this function clears account_identity, replaces account_email/account_organization/login_method with saved values, or calls ensure_fresh_credentials with write_ambient = false. The repository tests already use mockito. Add a test with a fixed usage response that shows that a renewal updates only the saved store and leaves .credentials.json unchanged.
As per path instructions: "Flag fetch or parse changes that come without deterministic samples or fixtures."

Partly addressed in 799739a. apply_standalone_summary() is now a separate step, and the new test standalone_result_takes_saved_labels_and_drops_token_identity covers it: the saved email, organization, and plan replace the live identity, and the token identity is dropped.
Not covered yet: the full fetch_standalone_saved_account network path. The usage and profile URLs are hard-coded constants, and the usage gate writes a global file, so a mockito test needs a URL seam and an isolated gate first. The write_ambient = false renewal check (store updated, .credentials.json unchanged) is also not tested in this commit. Both are left for a follow-up.

@Finesssee Thanks for clarifying. The new test covers the saved labels and removal of account_identity.
The full fetch path and the renewal check remain untested, so this finding stays open. Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for the URL seam, isolated usage gate, and remaining tests?

- Drop a switched-to account's isolated provenance before the credential swap, so a later marker write cannot leave Claude Code's login eligible. - Honor CODEXBAR_CLAUDE_OAUTH_TOKEN before the standalone fallback runs. - Name the real eligibility rule in the CHANGELOG entry. - Test the saved-label step of the standalone result.

Round 2 follow-up pushed in 799739a (fast-forward from 2ab9c6c). Outside-diff MAJOR, fixed: switch() now drops the target account's isolated provenance before the credential swap. Before this, a marker write after the swap could leave Claude Code's login eligible for the standalone fallback. A new #[cfg(unix)] test, failed_switch_does_not_leave_the_target_isolated, pins this. CodeRabbit's suggestion (exclude current_account_id from the check) was not used. It broke the existing test shared_login_marker_follows_save_current_import_and_remove, which needs the current account to keep its marker through save, import, and remove. Residual gap, documented rather than fixed: when no Claude Code login exists and the credential store cannot be written before and after the swap, the provenance clear cannot be confirmed. Other round-2 changes: CHANGELOG wording (4303738974), CODEXBAR_CLAUDE_OAUTH_TOKEN precedence over the standalone fallback (4303738979), and apply_standalone_summary() with a test (4303738982). The network path of the standalone fetch is still untested; see the reply on that thread. |
Summary
With Allow reading Claude Code's credentials off (the default), Claude usage only came from Claude Code's own login. If that login is missing or expired, Auto falls through to the CLI probe and the Claude card goes blank, even when a working account saved through Add account already exists in CodexBar.
This PR lets the primary Claude usage fetch use that saved account in exactly one safe situation: consent is off and there is exactly one saved account that CodexBar never installed into Claude Code. Its token is renewed in CodexBar's own store (reusing the existing saved-account renewal), and Claude Code's credential files are neither read nor written on this path.
How it stays safe:
Storegets an optionalinstalled_in_claude_codemarker. It is set byswitch,save_current, andreauthenticateof the live login, and cleared byremoveor a fresh isolatedimport(a new sign-in is a new refresh-token chain). A saved copy that shares Claude Code's refresh-token chain is never offered, so its token is never rotated behind Claude Code's back. Older builds ignore the field and older stores load unchanged.fetch_accountand the new path now share one helper instead of duplicating the refresh logic.Related issue
