Summary

Automatic browser cookie import used to stop at the first browser that had any cookies for a provider's domain, even when that browser's session was signed out or expired. Eight providers now try each browser's session in turn and stop at the first one the site accepts.

New scan (rust/src/browser/session_scan.rs): BrowserCookieScan reads browsers lazily in the shared detection order, one domain across all browsers before the next domain. It skips browsers that are empty or fail to read and drops repeated headers. Nothing is read until a provider asks for the next session. When every browser is used up, exhaustion_error() reports App-Bound Encryption first, then "no browser installed", then which browsers had nothing. A cookie-store trait lets tests use a recording fake.

Providers that now try each session: Typesafe, HelmCode (each tenant), Hyper, Claude (web), OpenCode Go (web), Zed, Notion, Cursor.

  • Zed and Notion now resolve their own browser cookies (owns_browser_cookie_resolution), so the desktop shell no longer pins them to the first browser's header. They move on after an expired session (Zed) or a 401 (Notion).
  • Cursor's in-provider browser fallback loops through sessions. owns_browser_cookie_resolution stays off for Cursor on purpose: turning it on would reorder Auto mode, because the Cursor app-session preference (upstream Cursor auth improvements steipete/CodexBar#2398) would run before the shell's browser import. On the desktop, the new loop therefore only runs when the shell's pre-import finds nothing.
  • Hyper still falls back to the API key in Auto mode when every session is rejected.

Shared helpers (rust/src/browser/cookies.rs): the existing first-match helpers are rebuilt on the scan and stop reading after the first hit instead of reading every browser first. The other cookie providers keep first-browser behavior but get the lazier read.

Shell (commands/providers.rs): the CLI-to-Web remap path now also skips its first-browser lookup for providers that own cookie resolution, matching the main path.

When no session works: a rejected session returns that provider's rejection (AuthRequired, or Zed's expired-session state). No cookies anywhere returns the scan's exhaustion error. Cookie source Off, or Manual with no header, never reads a browser. A pasted header is the only session tried.

Tests

  • browser::session_scan: lazy reads, stop after the accepted session, move past a stale session, explicit browser order, domain order and dedupe, App-Bound Encryption reporting, exhaustion-error priority.
  • providers::tests: cookie source Off causes no reads; lazy in-order reads.
  • Hyper: rejected_browser_session_moves_on_to_the_next_browser, api_source_never_asks_for_browser_sessions, every_rejected_browser_session_reports_an_expired_session_in_web.

The other migrated providers call the real cookie store, so their order and stop behavior is covered by the scan tests, not provider-level tests.

Commands run (after syncing with main)

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: pass
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: pass
  • cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib -- browser:: providers::tests hyper zed notion cursor typesafe helmcode claude::web_api opencodego: 407 passed, 1 ignored (the live cookie test gated by Gate live browser cookie test behind opt-in #902)
  • Before the sync: full rust suite with --skip test_cookie_extraction 4779 passed; Tauri crate 756 passed.

Not validated against real browser profiles (the live cookie test is opt-in). No UI change.

Not migrated yet

OpenCode Go session discovery, OpenCode, Mistral, Grok, Factory, MiMo, LongCat, Sakana, CodeBuddy, Command Code, T3 Chat, QwenCloud, MiniMax, MuseAI, Hugging Face, Alibaba, Alibaba Token Plan, Kimi web, and the shell's own get_cookie_header pre-import still use the first browser with cookies.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Automatic cookie import now tries browser sessions in sequence for Typesafe, HelmCode, Hyper, Claude, OpenCode Go, Zed, Notion, and Cursor. If a session is rejected, it tries the next; scanning stops after the first successful session.
    • Browser cookies are read only as needed, and browsers after a successful session are not read.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified browser selection behavior: Off and Manual sources do not scan browsers, while Import reads only the selected browser. Other providers continue to use the first browser with cookies for the site.

📝 Walkthrough

Selected providers now scan browser cookie sessions in order and retry after authentication rejection. Browser discovery and cookie reads occur lazily. Cookie-source settings continue to control whether browser reads occur.

Changes: Browser Cookie Sessions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cookie scan and lookup helpers
rust/src/browser/session_scan.rs, rust/src/browser/cookies.rs, rust/src/browser/mod.rs
Adds a lazy scan that yields browser cookie candidates, skips empty or failed reads, and reports exhaustion errors. Existing lookup helpers now use the scan.
Provider session access and source handling
rust/src/providers/mod.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/commands/providers.rs, docs/COOKIES.md, CHANGELOG.md
Adds lazy provider session iteration and avoids browser reads when cookie-source state disables import. Documentation describes provider-specific scanning and existing behavior for other sources.
Provider authentication retries
rust/src/providers/claude/web_api.rs, rust/src/providers/helmcode.rs, rust/src/providers/notion/mod.rs, rust/src/providers/opencodego/mod.rs, rust/src/providers/typesafe.rs, rust/src/providers/zed/mod.rs
These providers try another browser session after authentication rejection and retain provider-specific handling for other errors and exhaustion.
Cursor and Hyper credential paths
rust/src/providers/cursor/mod.rs, rust/src/providers/hyper/mod.rs, rust/src/providers/hyper/tests.rs
Cursor tries its app session before browser sessions. Hyper iterates browser sessions and retains API-key fallback behavior. Tests cover lazy reads, retries, and final errors.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

The pull request keeps browser-session data within the provider that requested it. The shared BrowserCookieScan and BrowserCookieSessions code is provider-agnostic and only yields cookie headers; each changed provider sends those headers to its own endpoints. The Claude cache write uses the Claude provider key, and the existing cache path is provider-specific. The only added ProviderId::Claude reference is inside rust/src/providers/claude/. The shared shell change uses the provider capability owns_browser_cookie_resolution() and adds no specific ProviderId branch. No changed code shows, logs, persists, or sends identity, plan, account label, or email across providers or accounts.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

No changed path exposes a real credential. The new session-scan logs contain only browser name, domain, cookie count, and cookie-read errors; they do not log cookie values or headers. Provider errors preserve auth/status constants rather than headers. Claude cache writes the accepted cookie header through the existing CookieHeaderCache/secure_file path under the app's CodexBar directory. The diff adds no keyring operations or credential-file deletion. Test values are synthetic fixtures, and no snapshot contains credentials.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

The pull-request diff changes no Cargo.toml, package.json, npm/yarn lockfile, or pnpm lockfile. It also does not change a pinned pnpm packageManager version. No dependency addition requires maintainer approval.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes browser-cookie resolution, provider logic, documentation, and a Tauri backend command. It changes no files under apps/desktop-tauri/src, rust/src/tray, or other listed UI paths. The Windows proof requirement is therefore not applicable.
