- Around line 27-29: Update the journald restart-failure branch to restore the
previous drop-in instead of always removing the installed file, then verify that
systemd-journald is active before returning. Keep the existing warning and retry
behavior when the previous configuration is restored and the service is
confirmed active.
Review comments at @src/lib/flashHealth.ts:
- Line 109: Update the bootId handling in the flash health reading and
rate-sample path: do not substitute "unknown" when the boot ID cannot be read,
and ensure writeRate withholds rate samples unless the boot ID is known. Keep
the since-boot reading available when the ID is unavailable.

Why
A free-sleep user reported ~25 GB/day of eMMC writes on a Pod 5, a little over a third of its rated endurance used after 6 months. We already move RAW frames to tmpfs (ADR 0018), and our NATS readers use core subscriptions (no JetStream consumer state). But we had no visibility into wear, and the journal still landed on flash: Eight's firmware sets
Storage=persistentand recreates/var/log/journal → /persistent/journalat every boot. On a pre-NATS Pod 5 with tmpfs active, I measured ~3 GB/day for the whole device.What
life_time(main and SLC areas, in 10% bands),pre_eol_inforeserve-block state, writes per day, and bytes written since boot. The card turns warn/danger at 80%+ wear or when the chip reports low reserve blocks, and is hidden off-pod./sys/block/mmcblk0/stat). An hourly sampler stores it in the newflash_write_samplestable in biometrics.db, keyed byboot_idso a reboot's counter reset is handled. The rate averages the last week of samples plus the live reading and shows once samples cover an hour. Rows go through the normal biometrics retention. The pod kernel has no per-process I/O accounting, so this is whole-device: firmware + sleepypod + OS.scripts/lib/journald-helperswritesStorage=volatile,RuntimeMaxUse=48Mand only restarts journald when the config changes; journald keeps services' log streams across the restart. It's used byinstalland bysp-update, so existing pods pick it up on update. Trade-off: logs from before a reboot are gone, sosp-bundle-logsonly covers the current boot.GET /system/flash(system.getFlashHealth). The demo handler is included. Results on Pod .88 (Pod 5, PJ3032 eMMC, 2026-10-17)
Whole-device writes from
/sys/block/mmcblk0/stat, in 20-minute windows on a settled pod:The journal change cuts total flash writes by about half. The on-flash journal stopped growing, and
/system/flashreturns the chip data on the pod.Rollout lag:
sp-updateruns the pod's existing copy of itself and installs the new copy partway through, so an existing pod picks up the journald change on the update after this one. The maintenance timer and storage sudoers already behave this way.Test plan

🛏️ Beam this PR onto a sleepypod ✨
Pick the snippet that matches your pod. Already-installed pods can't use the curl bootstraps below — sleepypod's egress firewall DROPs github.com, and the script that knows how to unblock WAN is the very file curl is trying to fetch. Use
sp-updateinstead; it's on disk and opens WAN as its first step.🔄 Already on a sleepypod (most common — review a PR on a running pod):
